Would it be cheaper to insure a VW Golf for an 18 year old as a name driver on my parents insurance ? I hear that a VW Golf is really expensive to insure for an 18 year old. Would it be cheaper if the car was insured for my parents and I was a name driver on that insurance ? Call up a company your not interested in getting a rate with and ask them. Or get your mom to. Then you call the company and ask how much it would cost with you alone and compare being on your moms to you being on your own insurance. Personally i think its cheaper to be on your mom's insurance. Most companies use the highest risk driver to set the price now to combat the fraudulent activity that you are thinking of engaging in. My '55 VW is a stick. Most air-cooled ones are. The "automatic" is an auto-shift. They're pretty cool, but very different. I've driven them, but never owned one, though I'd like to. Mine isn't difficult at all. The clutch plate has springs, and it's very forgiving. I can just about pop the clutch in first without any chatter every time. The speedo has little red bars that tell you when to shift to 2nd, 3rd & 4th. It's really a no-brainer. I've owned it since I was a hippy in 1974, but my wife wants me to sell it.
