When you're an automaker with a vehicle as popular as the Volkswagen Golf, there鈥檚 reason for concern any time a significant change is in the mix. We鈥檙e not suggesting these latest spy photos of the next-gen Golf are cause for concern - if anything the designers in Wolfsburg are treading very conservatively with the hatchback's exterior redux. It鈥檚 a completely different story inside, as these fresh spy shots show us in living color for the first time. The timeliness of these spy shots is quite interesting, as we covered a couple of teaser photos from VW less than 24 hours from this posting that glimpsed the hatchback鈥檚 new digital interior. A digital cluster is currently offered on the Golf R, but for the next-generation, it will be offered in other trims as well. The fresh photos mirror the teaser sketch in almost every way, with the instrument screen and center infotainment screen sharing the same horizontal space in the redesigned dash. There are far fewer buttons - presumably most of those functions will migrate to the touchscreen - but we can see a separate touch slider beneath the center screen that appears to control the temperature. The exact spec of this Golf isn鈥檛 known, but the relatively small tires and manual transmission suggest it鈥檚 on the lower side of the spectrum. If that鈥檚 the case, VW is certainly taking its compact to a new level, something the automaker said recently in its Annual General Meeting. Meanwhile, the new Golf will hold a familiar shape outside with the most prominent changes coming to the front fascia. This particular prototype is thick with camo wrap, but previous sightings have shown considerably more skin. It would seem the goal here is to have an evolutionary update outside, with a revolutionary change inside.





We are talking a lot about Volkswagen today. The German brand officially announced the next generation Golf will have a mild hybrid version and took a retrospective look at the first generation Jetta from nearly four decades ago. Now, it is time to talk about its hot hatches. Just like Ford, Renault, and Peugeot, Volkswagen has two hot hatches on sale today. However, unlike some of the rivals in the segment, the Polo GTI and Golf GTI actually share the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with different power outputs depending on the application. In this case, the folks over at Car Mania are comparing a 200-horsepower (149-kilowatt) Polo GTI with a 245-hp (183-kW) Golf GTI Performance, both with a dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox and launch control. Apparently, the Polo鈥檚 launch control is tuned much better. Out of a total of four runs, the smaller GTI hatch wins three drag races, mostly because of the Golf鈥檚 bad start. Even a driver鈥檚 change is not enough for the bigger brother to win the duel, but finally, when its launch control system works properly, it scores a win. Even then, the gap with the Polo GTI is minimal. If there鈥檚 one thing we learned from this video it鈥檚 that the new Polo GTI is actually a great car. Thankfully, Volkswagen decided not go the downsizing way and installed a large (for the standards of the segment) 2.0-liter turbo, which is already a well-proven engine. We are not here to judge, but if you ask us, we鈥檒l definitely go for the Polo GTI rather than the aging Golf GTI - it鈥檚 generally cheaper, quicker, and newer.





Volkswagen will unveil the "iBeetle" this week at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. Phone fans and gear heads shouldn't get too excited, however. This isn't the mythical iCar. It's a Volkswagen Beetle with an integrated docking station and specialized app. The app offers a number of features users already have on their iPhone, like Spotify. It also offers social features, like the ability to take a picture of yourself while the car is driving and post it to Facebook, or send "postcards" to your fiends from the road with maps of where you are. I know what you're thinking. How is this different that any other third-party car docking system? That means that if Apple makes a yellow iPhone, we should see a yellow iBeetle. Wolfsburg/Shanghai - Two iconic products will form an alliance later this year: the iPhone from Apple, and the Beetle from Volkswagen. The iPhone will interface with the Beetle and Beetle Convertible via a specially developed app and a docking station.





The iBeetle is the first model line from the Volkswagen Group in which the iPhone will become an integrated component. Volkswagen offers two different ways to acquire the innovative interface between iPhone and Beetle: as an app or as a standard feature of the new iBeetle and iBeetle Convertible. Both special models will be launched at the beginning of 2014. The app, docking station and iBeetle will make their world debut at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show (20th to 29th of April). The newly designed docking station is located centrally on the dashboard of the Beetle: the iPhone simply snaps in to integrate it with the car. Essentially, all iPhone functions can be used in the Beetle; the iPhone can be used to navigate, make calls hands-free, listen to music, and much more. When this special app is launched on an iPhone, it can either connect the phone to the Beetle via the docking station or wirelessly. Spotify: lets users stream media such as new songs, customized playlists or online radio stations into the Beetle. Those who wish can post their favorite music directly to friends.





In addition, users in the Beetle can switch between "Spotify" and "iTunes" at any time. Expert: offers five functions which make the iPhone an extended on-board instrument of the Beetle, such as a G-Meter (for measuring lateral acceleration), oil and coolant temperature gauges for the engine, a chronometer, and a compass. Trainer: can be used to compare driving times, distances, and fuel economy values for different routes between any two destinations. Here, too, tips can be posted via social networks like Twitter and Facebook-such as which route is faster to the office. Reader: lists the latest messages from social networks like Facebook, and reads iPhone messages aloud. Postcard: Sends the current location of the Beetle to friends as a digital postcard with a map motif. Photo: Sends photos taken inside the car to numerous social networks. For people looking to buy a car that's fun to drive, practical and relatively affordable, 2018 could be opportunity knocking. You might say that it's the year of the performance hatchback. Exemplified by the long-running Volkswagen Golf GTI, a performance hatchback is a hopped-up version of a regular compact economy car that has a more powerful engine, a performance-tuned suspension and grippier tires. It can rival a sports car for driving enjoyment while also being better suited for everyday driving. Automakers have introduced more such models recently, some with sophisticated features and race-ready engines. The greater competition could help you get a good deal this summer, too. Dealer pricing for many of these cars is well below MSRP, according to Edmunds' data on the average price paid. The sought-after Ford RS and the Honda Civic Type R are the exceptions. That said, here are eight top models to check out.





Ford has said it's going to stop selling most of its cars in favor of SUVs, so now might be the time to buy. Hyundai's redesigned Veloster has one door on the driver side and two doors on the passenger side. This asymmetrical layout improves access for rear passengers while maintaining the look of a traditional coupe. The Veloster's Turbo variants come with a 201-horsepower engine and suspension and brake upgrades. You can also get a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Hyundai also has a new option for 2019: the Veloster N. The N gets a bigger turbocharged engine good for up to 275 horsepower plus additional hardware upgrades. Thanks to its petite size, pug nose and boxy profile, the Mini Hardtop is one of the most easily identifiable cars on the road. To make the most of the Hardtop's performance, get the John Cooper Works version with its 228-horsepower turbocharged engine. The Mini Hardtop isn't as fast as some other cars here, but it's still a lot of fun to drive. VW created the first hot hatch in America with its 1983 GTI, and today's car is still one of the best. Having such a technologically advanced engine (even though it is from the factory) means that one should treat it with more respect than that of a normal engined car. I would suggest owners to maintain the Polo GTI as well as the Jetta 1.4TSI religiously and not miss any service intervals. In fact if VW says 15,000km, do it even lesser if possible. There is a 1,500km tollerance for bringing the car in for service - use it at 13,500km INSTEAD of going over the 15,000km mark. Do make sure that the service centre provides VW504 grade engine oil (which is VW's long life oil rating) for this and do not skimp on the quality of oil. Update: Do also wait before you turn off the ignition. Let the oil and the water circulate around a bit after a spirited drive. It lets the fluids cool down as if you turn the ignition off the water and oil stops circulating and heat is stuck in the engine block instead of having some of it return through the radiator and disperses off.





In some VWs the radiator fan stays on after the car stops, but you can assist the car by keeping the engine on for at least a minute or so. What is a minute against a destroyed engine? Note that some of us use aftermarket timers (turbo timers) to do this for us. But if your car is new and under warranty, this may void warranty as it is not a warranted addition. So do it manually. As for coil pack issues, this is a known VW as well as Audi problem. Again, this is heat related. If you are whacking the car silly all of the time this may arise. It isn't as often as you think as I have heard of many VW owners without such issues. It is simple, with great horsepower and torque, comes higher servicing and maintenance costs. I thought it was logical. The same goes for the DSG. This is different from something used in say, a Toyota Vios automatic.





That Toyota can do 'Go Greens' at the traffic lights every time of the day without any problems for years (as it has no torque from the normally aspirated engine to destroy the clutch pads too). So I would suggest buyers be prepared for a change of clutches if you intend to use the car for its duration if you are heavy on the accelerator pedal here and there all of the time. Drive normally most of the time and the DSG may survive as long as it should. The occasional spirited driving and lighting up the tyres at the traffic lights are acceptable. Again, note that it has clutches that may wear out and be prepared for it and you should do fine! Remember, it is a double clutch gearbox - two of everything. The most important issue when driving anything DSG (both wet or dry clutch DSG) is that when you drive it, make sure you come TO A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE CHANGING GEARS.





DSGs suffer from drivetrain shunts or shift shocks if you do not shift properly. When reversing, do not enter into forward until the car has stopped rolling backwards. Put your foot on the brake, come to a complete stop before shifthing into Drive. I know a whole lot of people who are so rough on their automatic transmissions that they break them. A DSG isn't a traditional automatic. In fact a CVT isn't that traditional too. I have encountered friends who have complained about jerky shifts on a CVT but when I thought them to actually shift properly, the issues stop happening. This is the same with maintaining a DSG. You shift properly and it will extend the lifespan of the gearbox. Especially the mechatronic controller which gets totally confused (it suffers from transmission shock when you shift on the fly) and then dies on you if you aren't doing it right.

DO NOT BUY AN EOS! DO NOT BUY A VOLKSWAGEN! If you're thinking of buying a Volkswagen, DON'T! Do yourself a HUGE favor and go look at other manufactures. THE WORST car I've ever had. Between personal cars and company cars I've driven Pontiac, Chevy, Oldsmobile, Ford, Chrysler and Mazda. And NEVER had problems with them. Enter Volkswagen. We're talking about an EOS Lux. The rear view mirror fell off the windshield shortly after purchasing the car. If only I had recognized the omen. The clear coat started peeling off the hood of the car. Have to replace a headlight bulb every 3 months. They constantly burn out. The passenger seat will not move forward or backwards in cold weather. The passenger side window stopped working and the motor had to be replaced. The car alarm went off and could not stop it. The door lock cylinder, ignition switch and battery were replaced. 2 days later the car alarm went off again and could not stop it.





Was told that the driver's side window motor would have to be replaced for the problem because of a "module" that's attached for the alarm system. The intake manifold on the engine got a hole in it and had to be replaced. I was told that while the intake manifold was off the valves should be cleaned of carbon buildup. The convertible top leaks. The convertible top stopped working. Was told the entire roof would have to removed in order to find out what was going on. The car was in the shop for 3 days and a technical expert was called in. I was told the roof was just "out of sync" and there was no real problem with it. 1,400 for no problem found. Since they removed the top, the top does nothing but creak. The "exchanger" on the engine had to be replaced. The car started leaking oil. They found not ONE or TWO but THREE places where oil was leaking from.





The gasket between the engine and transmission has to be replaced. The gasket for the timing cover has to be replaced. And some part for the turbocharger has to be replaced. I was told by the service manager that the oil leaks are a COMMON problem. But they normally don't all happen at once. So, oil leaks ARE TO BE EXPECTED. It's NORMAL for a Volkswagen. A control arm has a crack in it. One of the rear shocks has a leak. The windshield washer reservoir leaks. I probably forgot some things. I was hoping that the car would burst into flames and I'd watch it burn to the ground with a huge smile on my face. No such luck. The car is in the shop having the oil leaks taken care of. 1,800 more dollars put into the piece of garbage. 5,832 have been put into it since 2/2014. I told them to fix the oil leaks and I'm DONE WITH VOLKSWAGEN. The car will be GONE as soon as I get it back. DO NOT BUY A VOLKSWAGEN! Here鈥檚 an update. Traded the EOS in October 2017. Got a Jeep. The Volkswagen Golf plays many roles and plays them well. It鈥檚 a practical car. Two people can sit comfortably in the back seats. The hatchback design means you can fold those seats down and cram amazing loads of stuff into the cargo area. Being in one is pleasant. The Golf is one of the most refined compacts available, exuding precision German engineering, and upscale trim and a high level of standard equipment make it comfortable. These are also enjoyable cars to drive. All Golfs are agile, built on rigid chassis with carefully tuned suspensions. All are fitted with four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and all come standard with side-impact airbags. Some Golfs are frugal. The TDI diesel boasts an EPA-rated 42/49 mpg. 15,050. And Volkswagen now offers a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. Others are quick, downright fast. The GTI is a true driver鈥檚 car, born of the German autobahn. Seating adjustments are trademark Volkswagen with its unique jack to adjust seat height; they are a bit difficult to use at first with an awkward knob for adjusting rake, but familiarity improves this.

The electric motor was, in effect, a generator that recharges the batteries while driving. Nevertheless, when the car needed some extra power to make its way up to a steep incline, the electric motor would kick in and provide a boost to the gas engine. In 1910, a company by the name of Commercial Built Truck, which used a four cylinder gas engine to power a generator, eliminates the need for a transmission and Battery Park. This hybrid was built by company in Philadelphia until 1918. Steamers and electric hybrid cars were almost completely wiped out in 1913. Sales of electric cars dropped to 6,000 vehicles, while over 180,000 gasoline cars were sold. The Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development, and Demonstration Act of 1976 and U.S Congress enacted Public Law 94-413 were among the law鈥檚 objective to work with industry to improve batteries, motors, controllers and other hybrid electric components. And General Electric was chosen to construct a parallel hybrid sedan. And Toyota built a small sports car with a gas turbine generator supplying current to an electric motor, which makes it the first hybrid car for Toyota. Audi introduced the first generation of the Audi Duo experimental vehicle in 1989. It is based on the Audi 100 Avanti Quattro. It has a 12.6 horsepower electric engine, which drove the rear wheel instead of the propeller shaft. And also use a nickel cadmium battery to supply the energy. Two years after that, Audi unveiled the second generation Duo, which is also based on the Audi 100 Avanti Quattro.

Truth is, the Golf did something the earlier French and Italian hot hatches did not: it worked. So 40 years after the Golf GTI, we thought it time to revisit the genre with a mission simply to decide which is best. There have been seven generations to date, but for reasons that will become clear in a separate story (top right), we had few qualms about skipping versions three and four. Six was also left in the lorry because we felt it sufficiently close to five to add little to the debate. No trouble knowing where to start. The Mk1 sits there, quiet and humble yet with an aura beaming out so strong that it blinds your view of its offspring. You are drawn to it naturally and inevitably. Inside and out, it is delightfully, deliciously simple. And small. Compared with a new Golf GTI, it is almost half a metre shorter, 16cm narrower and, most astonishing of all, half a tonne lighter. There are entire cars that weigh less than that.





Our example is a late car so has a 1.8-litre single-cam motor pushing out 112bhp, 2bhp more than the 1.6 original but with a useful additional slug of mid-range torque. Such outputs might seem mere trifles today, but for family hatchbacks 40 years ago, they were a new level. And remember the weight, and lack thereof. There鈥檚 not much scope for achieving the perfect driving position because the wheel is fixed but it鈥檚 comfortable enough and the interior logically arranged and childishly easy to use. Grab that golf ball gearlever and go. It鈥檚 quick. I鈥檝e estimated a conservative 0-60mph time of 8.8sec but I鈥檝e seen plenty of claims that it鈥檚 faster, one suggesting an 8.2sec capability. But it鈥檚 the smoothness of the engine you remember most, combined with its willingness to rev. There鈥檚 more character in this engine note than in an entire showroom of turbocharged Golf motors, backed by a brilliantly swift and precise gearchange.





As if everybody forgot the Golf GTI introduced the range-topping TCR last year at Worthersee, Volkswagen is much obliged to remind us what makes it great. The truth of the matter is, the touring car is based on the road-going Golf GTI. Now that this rant is over, there鈥檚 no denying the Golf GTI TCR is a fun-to-drive hot hatchback. Starting at 38,950 euros in Germany, this pocket rocket features 290 PS (286 horsepower) from 2.0 liters of displacement and 380 Nm (280 pound-feet) available from 1,950 up to 5,300 rpm. There鈥檚 no other way of saying this, but the GTI TCR is the fastest front-wheel-drive Golf that Volkswagen sells these days. Part of this speed (5.6 seconds to 100 km/h; 260 km/h on full song) comes down to the seven-speed DSG, a transmission that鈥檚 also used by the Golf R (4.6 seconds; 267 km/h). The limited-edition Golf GTI Clubsport S might鈥檝e been more hardcore and some people prefer a three-pedal setup, but fret not. There鈥檚 an all-new Golf in the pipeline for before the ID. November 2019, featuring an evolution of the MQB and upgraded engine options. EA288 Evo is the name of the redesigned 2.0 TDI the Golf will use, sporting a 12-volt belt starter-generator system. In addition to mild-hybrid assistance, there鈥檚 talk the Golf R could be pushed to 400 PS or thereabouts. Only the middle section with the tailpipes of the exhaust system integrated on its left and right ends is treated in black. While the V6 FSI and V6 TDI Volkswagen Touareg versions have round tailpipes, the two top versions can be recognised by their chrome rectangular pipes. The VW Touareg's kerb weight was reduced by between 203 and 222 kilograms, depending on the version - a result of targeted body modifications, material selection and a lighter weight powertrain. For the first time in this vehicle class, body-related measures include the use of what are referred to as multi-layer insulating materials to insulate against noise. They weigh much less than conventional insulating materials yet are more effective. The kerb weight of the Volkswagen Touareg V6 FSI was reduced to 2,035 kilograms.





The turbodiesel versions weigh 2,099 (V6 TDI) and 2,222 kilograms (V8 TDI); the VW Touareg Hybrid comes in at a weight of 2,240 kilograms. The weight of the body-in-white was reduced by five percent to 398 kilograms. The entry-level engine in the petrol area, the optimised V6 FSI, continues to output 206 kW / 280 PS. At 9.9 l/100 km it consumes an incredible 2.5 litres less than the previous version. This combined fuel consumption is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 236 g/km - 60 g/km less than before. The smooth six-cylinder unit develops a maximum torque of 360 Newton-metres, which is constantly available between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm and guarantees superior high-torque performance. The power of the 24-valve engine peaks at 6,200 rpm. Compared to the V6 FSI of the previous model, the updated engine is equipped with a new engine controller (MED 17.1.6), which among other things integrates the new thermal management system, Stop-Start system and regenerative braking.





Other modifications: The conversion to a new, more precise machining process for the cylinder crankcase, modified piston rings and weight-optimised forged pistons produce lower friction values with immediate fuel consumption reduction. Changes were also made in the air intake system to modify the charge changing process. Another innovation in the area of emissions control: Here two ceramic main catalytic converters near the engine are used instead of the previous pre-converter and main catalytic converter system to assure conformance to the Euro-5 emissions standard. In addition, a newly positioned lambda probe makes a contribution toward impressively fulfilling the ULEV-2 emissions standard in the USA. The Volkswagen Touareg V6 FSI is 228 km/h fast and accelerates to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. Entirely new to the Volkswagen Touareg programme is the V8 TDI with 4,134 cm3 displacement and 250 kW / 340 PS (at 4,000 rpm). The new V8 TDI, like the V6 TDI, has common rail direct injection. In this case, the injection pressure reaches 2,000 bar.

Of course not every motorhead or petrolhead is aware of this or truly bothers about this as they are usually in love with their cars instead of clothes. But anyway, the Fashion Week happens every year and it showcases Malaysian fashion. This marks Volkswagen's entry into the fashion world and fits well with the brand DNA which is known for its timeless design and good performance. According to the good people at Volkswagen Malaysia, KLFW RTW has demonstrated that it is a great platform to feature creativity and ingenuity. So this time, Volkswagen has decided to become the Official Car Sponsor this year and to celebrate their debut, decided to showcase their most iconic (and therefore recognisable) designs with the Beetle, Golf R, and CC. They also previewed a new limited run Volkwagen Beetle called the Club. The Beetle Club in Hanabero Orange was proudly on display at the entrance of Pavillion Kuala Lumpur throughout the KLFW 2015 (i.e. the whole of last week). I suppose if any of you ended up there, you would have noticed that Beetle.

Sorry about the extended absence. Where did I leave off? Ah yes, the Boulder vacation! Sunday morning, Jacky and I accompanied Todd, Andrea and Cole to the town of Nederland. It's a mountain town 8233' above sea level and incredible 3000' higher than the city of Boulder. We had breakfast at a place called the Sundance Lodge and Cafe and then all went hiking on the Switzerland Trail for an hour or so after. Monday saw Jacky and I go hiking with Hudson, the family's german sheppard. I wish I remembered the name of the trail; memory is fuzzy after a couple weeks back at work I guess! I spent the afternoon wading around in the pool and getting a lovely sunburn in the fierce Colorado sun. Around 5pm, we get a call from Todd, saying he has the car and he'll be coming home soon. He wants Jacky and I to keep Andrea occupied around 6:00 so she doesn't see him arrive. Do you have any Pepto Bismol!





Oh man. Poor Jacky just isn't good at this stuff! While her sister shakes her head and moves toward the medicine cabinet, I shake my head while the girlfriend says "what was I supposed to do?". Somehow, Andrea didn't see Todd pull in. He walks in the door and presents a little gift bag to his wife, saying it's an early birthday present. Of course, three year old Cole wants to open the bag for his mom and proceeds to start pulling the wrapping tissue out of the bag. He chucks the key out of the bag as well and continues looking for something that's just not there. Andrea says upon seeing the key on the floor. Todd had a big bow on the Audi too! She of course was pretty speechless and thrilled. They put their son in the backseat and went for a little family drive while Jacky and I hung back at the house. We ended up having soup and sandwiches for supper instead of going out because of all the commotion.

In addition to the Passat, Volkswagen also manufactures the Golf which has top-notch visibility, a tilting steering wheel and adjustable seats. Either option would make a fantastic car for short people. There are numerous considerations that must be made before selecting a car for short people. The automobile should provide clear visibility over the steering wheel for a shorter individual. The foot pedals should be accessible or the manufacturer should provide pedals that can be adjusted. I rode two nights in a row! For a relatively long time, too. It was nice and cool Monday, so great riding weather. Riv spooked at the beginning, but then he was fine, even when he could see horses running around like idiots outside waiting to come in. 2 weeks. We didn't really accomplish much, just getting back to some semblance of work. Yesterday was pretty warm and I surprised myself by actually riding. Nothing very special, just a lot of transitions, including trot-halt-trot. It's amazing how quickly a couple of those get him to lighten up and stop leaning on my hands! He's been pretty nice and forward, too. Last night he lost the forward a couple times, which just makes me appreciate how much better he is. You don't realize how important forward is until you're riding around and it feels like the horse just dropped out from under you because there's no energy there. To think that used to be his normal! I couldn't have asked for a horse with more try in him. I also just wanted to take a minute to say how much I love my barn. I love my barn.





I feel like my horses and I hit the jackpot. Let me count the ways. 1. BO is young and therefore doesn't hold the standards from 30 years ago as the ideal (you know, things like "oats are a great horse feed!"). She's up to date on what the current recommendations are and is very knowledgeable (especially with feeding!). 2. She's around all the time, so she's easy to talk to when you need to, and she's in the barn to see what's going on. Not in the barn? Call or text, expect a reply quickly. 3. Number one priority: Care of the horses. Period. No nickle-and-diming for anything "extra". The horses get what they need to thrive, and that's that. 4. Open to suggestions and easy to talk to. Ever have one of those BOs who do things one way and that's it, and the thought of asking for something different makes you want to wet yourself? Yeah, that's totally not how my barn is. BO is happy to discuss options and ideas, and there's never a worry that she'll dismiss what the horse owner has to say or get annoyed. 5. BO is on top of things. A while back, BO asked if I would be okay with switching Princess to a different grain. I said sure, as long as he keeps weight on, so she switched him over. Before I could mention that I felt he was losing weight, she had already changed his grain back. How cool is that? 7. It's small. Only 14 stalls, so there's never a ton of people. 8. I know that my horses will be taken care of.
