2019 Volkswagen Golf 8 (Mk8)

2019 Volkswagen Golf 8 (Mk8)

The next-generation Volkswagen Golf is coming in 2020 and details regarding the 48V mild hybrid system have been revealed. In an effort to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, the Golf 8 will offer a mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (mHEV) derivatives with 48V technology. According to Volkswagen, 48V technology will be initially offered in conjunction with both the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre (EA211 evo) engines and DSG gearbox. The system will then later be offered on other derivatives and models. Where a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) gains battery charge via a plug, the mHEV is equipped with a 48V belt starter generator which, like an electric motor, supports the combustion engine in acceleration, for example. During deceleration, the generator converts kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost and charges the 48V Lithium-ion battery located under the passenger seat. This stored electrical energy can then be used to boost the Golf鈥檚 acceleration but more importantly, contributes to up to 0.4 L/100km in fuel savings, depending on the driving style.

You read reports saying you need to focus less, but I find myself turning my head to the left, and back to the right to see the meter properly. The font size is also too small, and cluttered so you don鈥檛 see your actual speed as quickly as you wish. This may be due to the fact that they used circles instead of the usual lines and the color coordination is off. But I seem to stare at the meter longer than necessary, and that creates eyestrain. I also tried looking behind the steering, and wished the meters were there. Perhaps this has got a little getting used to. But I turned on the lights in a dark carpark, and was pleasantly surprised at the green text from the digital tripmeter, and the pleasant light green meters. I suppose I will have more fun driving at night than in the day. The quality of the interior is generally good, fitting parts have no protrusions, nor imperfections.

However the dull gray interior could have used a bit of life with the use of a lighter color tone. Stepping out of the car though, the interior looked fine with the grey on grey as opposed to my previous thoughts that it was too drab. Perhaps the new-ness gleaming in the sun made it look okay? The fabric seats were quite okay, and the seats were quite comfortable on my ride home. However I do feel that the use of some leather would enhance the experience, and the smell. The new car smell seemed to be absent. Perhaps I will get that once I remove the plastic wrappers when I get off work. I don鈥檛 expect the interior to match the Camry, and the quality is a notch better than my Satria, but its design and color coordination earns it the lowest points. The 1NZ-FE engine seemed good on paper, and with the VVT-i badge on the left side of the car, you might eventually believe that you have a car so good, you want to spend the night with it.

The first few kilometers were fine at cruising speeds, but the moment I tried to accelerate the moment I cut into the right lane, it felt as if the car was just a caffeine injected tortoise. It takes quite a few seconds to bring the car to speed. But as soon as it鈥檚 moving the acceleration feels more intact. I have to say that I expected more of this engine. But for my needs, this is more than adequate. The acceleration falls behind the Camry and my Satria even, as my previous Satria seemed just that bit more responsive. Noise from outside is reduced to a slight muffling, something I like, making the stereo seems better than actual. In fact I actually thought that the 6 speaker 2 din unit will suffice for now. Of course this is not comparable to my 2 amp - 7 speaker unit in my beetle. But riding on the highway would be a joy as without the motorcyclists weaving in and out and around your car.

Volkswagen E-Golf Performance, Engine, Ride, Handling

Volkswagen E-Golf Performance, Engine, Ride, Handling

Like any EV there鈥檚 a smooth rush of silent and powerful acceleration. In fact, it shoots to 62mph from a standing start as quickly as most diesel hatchbacks. In truth, it runs out of steam quite soon after that, but it鈥檚 perfect for nipping between lights in the city and will still cruise at 70mph without any issue. Pulling the gear selector down to 鈥楤鈥?gives you the same effect as engine braking in a conventional car, and also regenerates energy to recharge the battery. There are five driving modes in total, depending on the severity of braking you want, and how much energy you want to recuperate. If you really want to conserve energy, the optional heat pump is worth considering - it recovers warmth from the car鈥檚 systems to heat the interior. The e-Golf doesn't handle too differently from any other Golf. There's slightly more body lean through tight bends, but its steering is well weighted and gives you a good sense of what the front wheels are doing. It's certainly agile enough for you to have fun on tight city streets, and there's enough grip to make cross country drives entertaining - more so than a Nissan Leaf, which has significantly more body roll. Ride quality is also impressive. The e-Golf smoothes over broken roads at low speeds as well as any mainstream Golf, and is just as comfortable on the motorway, too. In fact it鈥檚 far more cosseting than the slightly jittery BMW i3. At speed, road and wind noise are also well hushed, making the e-Golf one of the most refined electric cars on sale. Add in the lack of a grumbly diesel or petrol engine - just the near-silent whir of the electric motor - and it鈥檚 a very peaceful drive indeed.

I was looking at the golf but I am concerned about reliability. Are these cars with the automatic transmission reliable? I keep hearing mixed reviews on the Internet. I like the GTI, but I know that they have had trouble with the DSG (Dual Clutch) transmission. Have they fixed this issue? As I own a 2015 Golf GTI, I was chosen to answer this question, to the best of my Volkswagen-nerd ability. I will start by saying that I don鈥檛 actually own a dual-clutch GTI. I own a 6-speed manual version instead. However, I have plenty of experience driving the dual-clutch, as we鈥檝e borrowed several examples from Volkswagen. On the whole, I feel the DSG is an excellent transmission option. In fact, if you were buying a Golf R, I would suggest you buy that over the manual. It shifts quickly, holds gears well, and makes normal driving as comfortable as any automatic, for the most part.

Now, it appears Adam was asking about both the regular Golf and the GTI. The Mk7 Golf comes with a 6-speed automatic instead of a DSG. You may want the automatic. From my experience in the community, I have not heard tons of horror stories about reliability with the DSG, or the automatic in the regular Golf. Plus, if you are buying the car new, you鈥檒l have a warranty to cover any maintenance headaches for the first 6 years or 72,000 miles. Though, I have heard of a couple headaches to consider before buying a DSG-equipped GTI. Adam informed us that he spends a lot of time commuting in stop-and-go traffic. This is an area where many dual-clutch transmissions struggle, including the GTI. Because of the way a dual-clutch is constructed, there is no torque converter like a typical automatic. So, the car has to slip the clutch to mimic the action of a torque converter.

This can make the car jerky while driving in heavy traffic. It鈥檚 not as painful for some as driving a manual, but it鈥檚 less ideal than an automatic. The other thing to consider is Volkswagen鈥檚 40,000-mile service interval for the DSG. This is a process that requires dropping the oil pan, replacing costly transmission fluid, and replacing the filter. 400. And you pretty much have to do it every 40,000 miles, or else you may damage your transmission. This is not related to the 40,000-mile general service that VW also recommends, on top of servicing the DSG transmission. Should You Buy One? My advice is this: Reliability is not a huge concern. However, the DSG has some headaches that come with ownership, like any other dual-clutch out there. If you can live with the downsides, then it鈥檚 an excellent choice. The car itself I cannot recommend enough. It鈥檚 incredibly fun to drive, great on gas, and can fit a whole bedroom鈥檚 worth of stuff from Ikea in the back. Trust me, as a recent college graduate, I would know. Thanks to Adam for sending in the question, and letting me flex my Volkswagen knowledge a little.

The awarding of 鈥淕oldenes Lenkrad 2005鈥?to Passat reflects the recognition which this model currently enjoys on the German market. Volkswagen models have traditionally always been successful when it came to the 鈥淕oldenes Lenkrad鈥?award. Previous winners of this coveted prize have also included the Polo, Golf, Touran and Touareg. The new Passat has been available as a saloon since March of this year and as a variant since August 19. The Passat comes with a choice of four fittings packages: Trendline, Comfortline, Sportline and Highline.

The Volkswagen Golf struggled for reliability in last year鈥檚 Driver Power survey, but what a difference 12 months can make. The Mk7 hatch is now in the top 10 most reliable family cars on the market with a 91.60 per cent rating, while just 15 per cent of owners reported a problem. Check the suspension though, as it鈥檚 the most common issue, while many owners also complained that servicing costs are too steep. The third-generation Octavia has been on sale since 2013 and is one of the most popular family cars around thanks to its blend of practicality and low running costs. It鈥檚 also a car you can depend on, finishing a respectable ninth in its class and 16th overall for reliability in this year鈥檚 Driver Power survey. A lot of owners reported faults (34.1 per cent), but the high reliability ranking suggests that most issues are not serious. The high-riding Mk1 MINI Countryman was replaced in 2017, but the original car scores well for reliability with an impressive 92.04 per cent - good enough for eighth place on our list.

Interior trim causes the most complaints among respondents, but reports of other issues are rare (13.9 per cent). Maintenance bills are high if you don鈥檛 have one of the pre-paid TLC packs, though. The Mk3 SEAT Leon has been available since 2012, but its age is no factor when it comes to reliability as the sporty hatch comfortably makes the top 10 most reliable used family cars on sale. It鈥檚 similar to the Mk7 Volkswagen Golf under the skin, which sits in tenth place on this list, with owners of both reporting almost the same amount of problems. The styling of the ninth-generation Honda Civic has always polarised opinion, but reaction is mostly positive when it comes to reliability. With a score of 92.60 per cent, the hatchback is the seventh most reliable used family car money can buy. On the rare occasions things do go wrong (11.3 per cent), Civic owners taking part in the survey say electrics are often to blame. The Mk4 CR-V just edged out the Civic to claim the honour of most reliable used Honda with a Driver Power score of 92.72 per cent.

Just 11.1 per cent of respondents mentioned that the family SUV had gone wrong, with electrical and gearbox issues the main problem, while reasonable dealers鈥?charges were also commended. The Skoda Yeti excelled in last year鈥檚 Driver Power reliability survey, and despite a slight drop, the quirky SUV still has much to offer. A score of 92.86 per cent sees it just creep into fourth place, while just 15.9 per cent of owners said that they have had a problem - with electrics being the biggest gripe. Toyota鈥檚 Prius continues to impress as a used choice, with reliability standing out in our 2018 Driver Power survey. The pioneering hybrid scored an impressive 93.17 per cent, suggesting there is nothing to fear from those hi-tech mechanicals. Although 20.7 per cent of owners reported a problem, the high ranking means issues are unlikely to have been major. The Mk2 Toyota Auris, which was on sale between 2012 and 2018, may not set pulses racing from a design perspective, but there is no doubting its reliability. It sits second on our list of the most reliable used family cars with a score of 94.63 per cent, which is also good enough for fourth place across all sectors, with just 6.9 per cent of owners reporting issues. The Toyota RAV4 is officially the most reliable used family car in our 2018 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey. It鈥檚 also the third Toyota on this list. In fact it鈥檚 the third Toyota in the top three, suggesting the Japanese brand is still at the forefront when it comes to reliability. Reported issues are scarce (15.4 per cent), with respondents tending to mention the brakes if they did have trouble.

The internal combustion engine is a marvellous piece of machinery. However, its performance can be further improved by adding a few specialised components. A High Performance Air Intake System is one such add-on which can boost the efficiency of an engine. The IC engine in its native form does not exploit the power of internal combustion to its fullest extent. This can be remedied by raising the air to fuel ratio within the combustion chamber with the help of a performance induction kit. The high performance air intake system pumps additional air into the intake, thereby increasing the air to fuel ratio. The increased level of oxygen in the chamber results in better combustion and increased power output. Since the fuel is more fully burnt up, there is no wastage of fuel and the mileage of the vehicle increases as well. The exhaust gases are much cleaner due to better combustion.

Pipercross has been researching, designing and developing performance induction kits in the UK for 25 years. For instance, the VW Golf MK6 Intake System developed for the Volkswagen Golf Mk6 GTI has specialised air filters that provide stronger air flow. The filters also last for a much longer period. One of the ways to increase the density of air flow is to pump cooler air into the intake. Cold air is heavier and more dense when compared to the same volume of hot air. But since air surrounding the engine is much hotter, getting access to cooler air is difficult. The Pipercross intake system uses an aluminium heat shield to overcome this problem. The heat shield keeps the air flow at a cooler temperature, thereby increasing the air's density for a higher air to fuel ratio. The system uses a foam air filter, a silicon hose and aluminium turbo pipe for superior performance. The foam filter is cleanable and reusable. Vehicle owners can buy it once and use it forever. There is also a lifetime warranty to support this feature. The stage 2 pipe in the air intake system alone increases the air flow by 27% when compared to an OEM part. And the entire Pipercross system improves the airflow by an astonishing 45%. This performance improvement results in better fuel economy and more power from the engine. Car owners who wish to improve the performance of their vehicles can invest in a Pipercross High Performance Air Intake System and experience enhanced efficiency and engine power output.

The sporty 2019 Volkswagen GTI hatchback earned top marks in the latest IIHS crash tests and qualified for the organization's top award when equipped with extra-cost headlights and collision-prevention gear. The 2019 GTI earned "Good" ratings in every crash test, save for an "Acceptable" in the passenger-side small overlap front test. Those score were good enough to help the VW GTI qualify for a Top Safety Pick award. The optional automatic emergency braking system avoided crashes at 12 mph and 25 mph, and the forward-collision warning system also meets NHTSA criteria. Like so many vehicles the IIHS tests, the GTI was let down by its headlights. Only the optional LED headlights, which come standard on GTI SE, Rabbit Edition, and Autobahn trims, earned an "Acceptable" rating, which helped the car make the cut for a Top Safety Pick. The base headlights, however, are rated "Poor" for their subpar illumination in numerous tests. It's worth noting the VW Golf on which the GTI is based earned the same crash test ratings but failed to earn a Top Safety Pick due to its weak standard headlights. The same scenario played out for the related Golf Alltrack and Sportwagon models. The GTI is the first VW to earn an award from the IIHS so far this year.

2019 Volkswagen GTI Cup Will Be Faster Than Today's Golf R

2019 Volkswagen GTI Cup Will Be Faster Than Today's Golf R

You'll just have to pay VW extra to make it happen. Earlier this month we learned Volkswagen ultimately decided to ditch a hybrid powertrain for its next-generation Golf GTI hot hatch, due to premiere next September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Instead, VW is sticking with the status quo by offering an updated version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four available in today鈥檚 GTI. And, of course, it鈥檒l be more powerful, as we also previously reported. Apparently, VW feels there鈥檚 a market for an in-between model so it鈥檚 making it a permanent thing. The GTI Cup will not be limited edition and will boast a number of exterior upgrades as well. Some of these include an extreme aero kit, lower ride height, fatter wheels, bigger brakes, and a differential lock. Output is said to still be around 286 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. And here鈥檚 the best part: VW will remove the top speed limiter chip for an extra fee. Instead of the typical 155 mph maximum speed, that figure will increase to 166 mph. Even the current Golf R has a 155 mph top speed. The report also notes the next Golf R will also be more powerful, which we already knew. Expect at least 328 hp and 295 lb-ft sent to all four wheels through the familiar seven-speed dual-clutch. But the big news here is really the existence of the new GTI Cup. It鈥檒l not only cost less than the Golf R, but will also weigh less too because it lacks an AWD system. Although we won鈥檛 know specifics for several months, its power-to-weight-ratio could be best in class and maybe, just maybe, challenge the Honda Civic Type R to a certain Nurburgring record.

The Volkswagen Golf Variant R-line is something that really caught me by surprise.. Despite being a lengthy stationwagon.. Let me show you around what this car can deliver for you.. The R-Line equipment package lends the Golf Variant a sportier look. In fact, the R-line comes in standard for all Golf Variant in Singapore. I like the rims which are very unique to the style of the car.. Exterior styling of the 4,562 mm long Golf Variant, which is 307 mm longer than hatchback model, reflects the same impressive lines up to the B pillars. From the rear doors back, special modifications give the Golf Variant its own identity. It was planned as a member of the series right from the outset and was developed in parallel to the hatchback. Perfection in the details is evident in such prominent features as the D-pillars. Here, designers succeeded in transferring the taut form that is so typical of the Golf - like the chords of an arc with an inset arrow - from the C-pillars to the D-pillars. If ya not sure what these B-C-D Pillars are.. The Golf Variant鈥檚 styling with its precise lines creates a sporty and impressive look.

The two-part rear lights emphasise its family affiliation to the model range and the brand. In its interior, the Golf Variant also overcomes class boundaries in terms of its high-quality materials and the exclusive appearance of its design. When stepping into the car, the wide centre console is immediately apparent; it is more typical of a premium class car. Centrally mounted on the centre console is the modern 鈥楧iscover Pro鈥?infotainment system, with an 8-inch display and the latest App-Connect smartphone connectivity features. It works with the MirrorLink, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay services. Speedometer of the Golf Variant is pretty standard on all Volkswagen models. Neat and clean I would say.. With a simple LCD screen between the dials. It displays all the different modes and information on it clearly.. You can also switch it to radio.. Over here its the DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) Gear. Its pretty impressive I would say.. The gear changes are really smooth and doesn't feel jerky at all.

When I switch the gear to the S-mode (Sports Mode), playing with the rocker gearshifts on the steering wheel.. The DSG from Volkswagen allows quick, smooth gear changes with the ease of an automatic transmission. The fuel consumption of cars with a DSG is sometimes lower than that of models with a manual transmission (depending on driving style). The manual gear selection option can also deliver sporty driving pleasure if desired and can be operated using the rocker switches on the steering wheel. In the picture above, the car also sport a Park Assist feature which allows you to park your car hands-free. Its pretty amazing - feel free to do a test-drive at the showroom and experience it yourself. And right below the Park Assist button, is a function that would alert you when any object is very near to the vehicle. On the left side of the gear..

The "MODE" is actually the Driving Profile Selection. Personalised and practical: the Driving Profile Selection allows you to adapt the Golf Variant to your individual driving style. At the push of a button, elements such as the engine, steering and transmission characteristics, and even the air-conditioning and headlamp settings are tailored to your requirements. Right below it is a Auto-Off Engine button.. OFF-ed automatically when the car is stopped at the traffic junction or when the car is just stationary. When the engine is offed, the air-con would not be that cold and strong also. This is proven to be more fuel efficient. This function can be activated or deactivated with the push of the button. Here are two cup holders for the driver & passenger. On the left side.. All at the push of a button instead of the pull of a lever: the electronic parking brake is operated with the greatest of ease.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta

2019 Volkswagen Jetta

Wolfsburg, 15 August 2005 - Volkswagen is bringing the new Jetta to Europe. The fifth generation of the saloon also sees the company introduce a standard name for all markets across the globe. In Germany / Europe, the Bora will therefore be called the Jetta again. It has more space to offer for long journeys than ever before. Compared with the Bora, the length of the new Jetta has grown around 18 centimetres to 4.55 metres. It also has an impressive 527-litre boot (plus 72 litres). This combination definitely works. In the USA, for example, the Jetta has managed to secure the position of best-selling car among all European manufacturers year after year. Sporty. From now on, Volkswagen will position the Jetta, which has sold over 6.6 million units, more in the sporty/elegant area of compact saloons like the US concept. The more independent design with the chrome shield-like radiator grille inspired by the roadster study Concept R visually shows the progressive way. However, comfort has not been forgotten: The innovative safety chassis with its four-link rear axle technically allows an extraordinarily perfect symbiosis of high-quality comfort and driving dynamics.

Luxury. Upon launch (Germany: 19 August), the new Jetta will be available in three equipment versions 鈥?Trendline, Comfortline and Sportline. The traditional basic version has therefore been left out. This saloon offers the best value for money in this segment. Agile. In Europe, Volkswagen will offer the new Jetta with a total of seven four-cylinder engines (four petrol, three diesel). The outputs range from 75 kW /102 hp (1.6) to 147 kW / 200 hp (2.0 FSI Turbo). Three of the four petrol engines and all diesels use direct injection. All engines fulfil the EU4 norm. Larger. The transition from the Bora to the Jetta has not only seen a great leap in terms of design, but also in terms of interior and exterior dimensions. 6.5 cm). The additional centimetres mainly benefit the rear passengers, who gain an extra 6.5 centimetres of legroom. LED taillights: As standard, the Jetta has LED taillights in the style of the Golf Plus and Passat. LED technology provides considerably better illumination than conventional taillights. Other advantages include faster response, lower energy requirement and a longer lifespan.

Restraint systems: In addition to the standard front airbags, side airbags and side curtains, you can also order optional side airbags for the rear. All five seats have head restraints and three-point belts. In the front, active head restraints, belt tensioners and belt force limiters are used. Tyre pressure monitoring system: As standard in the Jetta Comfortline, special sensors monitor the inflation pressure of the tyres and warn the driver when pressure is lost. Global Player: According to the volume ranking, the ten most important markets for the Jetta outside Germany and the USA are the UK, Turkey, Austria, Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and Sweden. They are followed by Poland, Japan, Ireland, Hungary and Finland on the next five places. The new Jetta is built at VW鈥檚 Puebla plant in Mexico using the latest production techniques: The body is assembled using laser welding and high-strength steels. Compared with the previous model, the length of the laser welding joints has been increased 14 fold. This is one of the ways we have managed to increase the static and dynamic body stiffness to the two-digit range. All data and equipment mentioned in this press kit applies to the model range offered in Germany. Models for other countries may differ. Modifications and errors excepted. The terms FSI, TDI and DSG are registered trademarks of Volkswagen AG or other Volkswagen Group companies in Germany.

It may take a couple of tries, but don't get frustrated and force it. The switch will pop loose and then all you need to do is replace the old with the new. Connect the new brake light switch to the electrical system, which is by far the easiest part of the process. Getting the new brake light switch to click in place is a little tricky because it is hard to see what you're doing, while getting enough leverage to turn it into place. Be patient. Position the new switch so that the contours match the bracket. Once you have it positioned, just turn the switch to the right with steady pressure. You'll know it's in the correct position when you hear a satisfying click as the switch locks into place. This is definitely a manageable part to fix yourself. I'm not a girl with a whole lot of auto repair experience, and it took me about 10 minutes to do.

If you know what you're doing, I bet it will take about 2 minutes. This is a simple fix, which will save you time and money, and by far the hardest part of the repair is just getting to the part. Same price at Auto Zone. I thank you very much for this post and saving me lots of money. After what I have been through tonight, I really appreciate you, and from your description I can see that you know EXACTLY what you are talking about. Perfect, it works. Thanks so much. It was very helpful. 10.48 after tax, did the limbo to get under the steering wheel, popped it on, totally fixed! Super easy, thank you so much! Thank you so much.

This happened to my car and I had no guy to help me. Thanks to you, I did it all on my own. I was able to show them the part I needed. You are such a blessing to me for posting this. Thanks so much for this post. It was exactly what was wrong with my Chevy Aveo. Thanks for a great post. I had to replace one on my daughter Aveo. The plunger on the switch may have to be pulled out a liitle to make it long enough it seems to be adjustable and kind of clicks when you pull it out or push it in. Well I truly enjoyed reading it. This article provided by you is very constructive for proper planning. Thank you sooo much it took me all of 5 minutes to do! This is one of the BEST posts I've ever found online! The first time my brake switch broke @ 20,000 miles, I had to bring the car to the dealership.

The hatch opens to bumper level by pivoting the top half of the VW logo inwards (also by pushbutton inside) and cargo doesn't require a big lift to clear the painted surfaces. A rear wiper sits at the bottom of the glass out of mirror-view but sweeps almost all the glass one looks through. Curb weight is approximately 3,050 pounds. The GTI cabin is businesslike without being austere, a place the driver can appreciate and passengers will find quite accommodating. It's nicely trimmed and well-assembled, the level of fit and finish better than you might expect for the price knowing money also got spent on the engineering. You might argue the instruments and switches benefit from Audi influence, or the other way round since VW owns Audi. Heated sport seats are standard up front with a fair range of adjustment, long cushions for long-legged support, excellent bolstering that contains you without restricting movement or entry and exit, and comfort for all-day drives. Leather is available yet we find the standard cloth better breathing and a bit less slippery if you're of slender build.

The rear seats are designed for three-across seating, but as usual this is better for slim adults or children; more bolstering might be beneficial for some passengers but would compromise flexibility. There are three adjustable headrests, reading lights, cupholders, and storage bins, but the side windows open only on four-door models (the seats and space are the same). It may not be a long car but it is roomy; we put four 6-plus-footers in a moonroof model with no complaints thanks to the hatchback roofline. Both front seats slide forward for entry/exit and with big side doors make the two-door a realistic proposition. A tilt and telescoping column with a flat-bottom, heavily contoured steering wheel, a good dead pedal and nearby brake and shifter allow anyone from 5-foot to 6-foot, 5 inches to find a comfortable driving position. Any option pack adds controls to both wheel spokes and automatics have shift buttons behind, so it's rare to need to remove a hand from the wheel. Gauges are basic white-on-black analog with large engine and road speed, and 270-degree sweep fuel and temperature inside them.

A central display handles trip computer and radio data, exterior temperature, door-open warnings and so forth. The audio and navigation systems are new for 2011, MP3/iPod compatible, most touch-screen and Bluetooth controls are roof mounted. Climate control is three-ring simple and unlike many cars each of the center vents can be closed independent of the other. Storage is reasonably good. Outward visibility is very good. Outside mirrors are low and the inside high enough that neither blocks any vision even on climbing switchbacks. The bottom of the windshield is unobstructed the full width of the dash and the top is high for an excellent view forward, and the rear pillars are so far away they don't compromise quarter views. Behind the seats there is 15 cubic feet of trunk space; a bit less below the cargo cover. Folding the rear seats expands that to more than 40 cubic feet bettering some SUVs. The GTI is a hoot to drive, whether ferrying kids about or resorting to hooliganism.

The synergy makes it balanced, capable and a great blend, even if other cars have more speed or higher handling limits. With a small turbocharger on the 2-liter four-cylinder, response is immediate and the power is gratifying at any speed. Peak horsepower is 200 hp and maximum torque 207 lb-ft, both inferior to the MazdaSpeed3, Mitusbishi Ralliart and the Subaru Impreza WRX. Those cars are quicker but rate about 20-percent lower fuel economy, and the all-wheel drive Ralliart and WRX are heavier. Honda's Civic Si non-turbo matches horsepower but falls behind on torque and economy. Hyundai's rear-drive Genesis coupe 2-liter turbo is slightly more powerful and less economical, and not quite as refined as the GTI. Underway, that refinement counts for a lot. All 207 lb-ft is available from 1800 rpm to 5000, and max power from 5100-6000, so there is virtually nowhere on the rev band without plenty of urge. Officially, the engine goes to 6500 rpm, smoothly and with a pleasant snarl from the tailpipes, but on more than one occasion the tach needle on a DSG car sailed right off to 7000 rpm under full throttle.

Engines with 1.0 or 1.4 litre displacement that are fuel efficient yet strong; this is downsizing by the book. Ideal for anyone who wants to cover maximum distances with minimal fuel consumption. Without the Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon, the T1 might not have existed, and of course neither would the Volkswagen Bulli concept vehicle at Geneva. That is because Pon was the person who on 23 April, 1947, sketched a picture of a compact bus in his notebook. Actually, the Dutchman's drawing was a simple side view of a radically shortened public omnibus placed over the wheelbase of a Beetle with an "m" for "motor" written on it. That was it. The world's first van was born. Great ideas usually just take a few strokes of the pen, but then they require a dedicated effort to implement them. Volkswagen designers took this sketch and created the bus that became an automotive icon with the characteristic "V" in front.

The Bulli concept vehicle now follows in the footsteps of the original bus and demonstrates the concept of maximum space utilisation with the characteristic "V" with VW logo at the front end and the cleanest of proportions. In the process, the concept vehicle's design follows the maxims of the new Volkswagen "design DNA." Retro? Hardly. It is a Volkswagen! The new edition of the Bulli is 3.99 metres long, 1.75 metres wide and 1.70 metres tall. The T1 was somewhat longer and taller, but narrower. With a wheelbase of 2.62 metres, the Volkswagen Bulli utilises the overall length very well. Also striking here are the Bulli's relatively large track widths (1.50 m front and rear) in relation to body width. Front end: Like the Samba bus before it, the Bulli being presented in Geneva also has two-tone paint - in this case white and red. The "V" on the bonnet, is kept white.

The bonnet does house the engine: instead of rear-wheel drive with a boxer engine, as on the Samba, the Volkswagen Bulli has an electric motor located forward of the front axle and front-wheel drive. Here it is a compact integral drive whose primary components are an E-motor, high-voltage pulse inverter and DC/DC converter for the 12-Volt electrical system. In keeping with the Volkswagen design DNA, there is a horizontal layout of the narrow dual headlights with L-shaped LED daytime running lights and turn indicators implemented as LEDs arranged in an inverted L shape at each outer corner. Incidentally, LEDs not only exhibit tremendous luminous power and long life; due to their low energy consumption they are ideal for the electrically powered Bulli of 2011. Located between the headlights in the bonnet is, as always, the VW logo. On the level beneath, one finds - once again arranged in a horizontal line - the air intakes for the passenger compartment and for battery cooling or for cooling the alternative conventional drives.

Finally, the bumper that is seamlessly integrated in the front end completes the design. Laterally, it exhibits a large round fog light on each side, another air intake in the middle, and a front spoiler in black below. This line matches the lines of the side sills. Side profile: The Bulli's two-tone paint also distinguishes the sides. Treated in white is the entire area above what is known as the character line. Originating in the wings is a white stripe that runs to the distinctive D-pillars; above them, the entire roof section is painted in this colour. The continuous line of windows creates an especially striking contrast between the white sections. Here the visually slender black pillars executed in the style of the 2001 Microbus concept are visually striking. Painted in red are the door mirror housings protruding from the line of windows. Beneath the character line is the red body area. Rear section: The Volkswagen design DNA with its horizontal lines also dominates the rear of the new Bulli.

The Refuge Inn certainly didn't care (great place, btw! Indoor heated pool, real close to Assateague Island, free hot breakfast, and friendly staff!). Also, there are some newer Tesla stations that operate at 277 volts, which the Bolt CAN NOT handle. I believe the Bolt would simply refuse to charge if connected to such a station, but user beware! Thanks to the JDapter Stub, a lot of additional L2 charging charging plugs are now opened up to my Bolt. If you don't road trip much, this adapter may be of marginal usefulness to you, but for anyone that likes to travel outside the Bolt's 238 mile EPA-rated range, is a very useful accessory indeed. P.S. For those Tesla owners that think a non-Tesla using a Tesla destination station is wrong: get over yourselves! Non-Tesla owners using Tesla destination stations are just obliging him. 馃槃 And before you ask "Why didn't you just use the Clipper Creek unit?", answer is I wanted to properly test out my JDapter Stub. P.P.S. I was recently unceremoniously banned from the main Chevy Bolt EV Owners Facebook group because the admins of that group are a bunch of commies and censor people like North Korean state media. To the winner goes the spoils! Auldsod2017 was now just a memory. Lost balls: only 5! This was simply an amazing trip that is unlikely to be matched for as long as I live. My thanks and appreciation to Chris, Howard, Andrew, Matt, Ed, Steve and Dan for welcoming me with open arms and for allowing me to join them on this trip of a lifetime! I feel I have seven friends for life after this incredible experience. The year didn't end there, as I'd still visit three other courses near home before I put the clubs away for the season. First, I ventured to one of Canada's best courses, Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ancaster, Ontario. I've profiled Hamilton in the past and you can check out that detailed post right here. I'd play two more late season rounds away from my home club, with one on the Battlefield Course at Legends on the Niagara and the other at Niagara Frontier Country Club in Youngstown, New York. I've played a number of times at the Battlefield, a Doug Carrick design from 2002. Lots of width, lots of water but a modest piece of land and little of interest architecturally. Interestingly enough, Carrick also recently touched up Niagara Frontier, which is a reciprocal club to my home course in St. Catharines. Frontier was short but interesting, with tiny little green complexes and some pretty solid land. I'm guessing we'll return one day. In all, including my home club at St. Catharines G&CC, I was able to play 16 different golf courses in 2017, with a whopping twelve of them being first time visits. 2017 will be a very tough year to top. Once again, my thanks to everyone who helped make this one of the great years in my golfing life.

For 45 years now, Volkswagens with extra-large cargo areas have been called - unless they are a van - "Variant". To date, more than 6.1 million of them have been sold worldwide. Now there is a new one: The Golf Variant. The third generation of the Golf Variant will be presented in a world premiere at the International Geneva Motor Show. Its market introduction is scheduled for this summer, initially in Europe. This wagon, which is as spacious as it is variable, is being supplemented with the addition of a third - and fourth - body version to the successful Golf product lineup. Version 1: The classic Golf, the "icon", including the "GT", "GTI" and "R32". Version 2: The Golf Plus with greater height, higher seat position and longitudinally adjustable rear bench seat. The new CrossGolf, which is based on the Golf Plus, is also being launched currently. Version 3: The Jetta; although it is not called a Golf, in its DNA it is one.

Rendering: VW Golf 8 & GTI Coming In 2019

Although the Golf 7 has only recently been facelifted and very much remains the most popular C-segment hatchback around, work is progressing swiftly on its replacement. Here鈥檚 what we know thus far. The eight-generation Volkswagen Golf will be unveiled in 2019 before going on sale worldwide (including South Africa) in 2020, with hot GTI versions following soon after. According to VW insiders, the Golf will remain its most important product, at least for another generation, as the German marque develops and rolls out its entire new series of I.D. While Volkswagen has recovered well from the Diesel Gate scandal, the impact on product development has not been limited to the heightened importance attached to bringing electric vehicles to market. The Golf Mk8 line-up will be affected by the scandal, too, with especially more focus likely to be placed on the petrol engine and hybrid derivatives. Volkswagen will be introducing a sophisticated 48V electrical system on Golf 8, which allows for the fitment of a wide range of efficiency measures. Indeed, efficiency is a strong focus overall, with a weight saving of up to 70 kg suggested on some models.

Golf 8 will use an evolution of the acclaimed MQB platform that has given current VW products such excellent ride/handling characteristics. The new electric vehicle line-up will get its own platform, dubbed MEB. Cabin will feature even more top-end materials and tech integration. In terms of design, expect the Golf to follow in the wheeltracks of the highly-acclaimed Tiguan and next-generation Polo, by being slightly wider and lower, with more chiselled, angular looks. Volkswagen鈥檚 new design boss, Michael Mauer, is ex-Porsche, and knows a thing or two about evolving the looks of an icon carefully, but remaining relevant. Our artist's impression (main image) includes some of the latest information coming out of Germany. Inside, Golf is likely to step completely into the premium leagues. In recent years the C-segment hatchback (including the Golf) has started to shed market share because car buyers want either premium badges or compact crossovers. Insiders say Golf 8 will feature authentic materials and a focus on technology, such as gesture control and an updated version of the marque's smart TFT dash display. A number of autonomous-driving features are likely to feature, too, including traffic-jam assist.

At the moment reports indicate a comprehensive model line-up consisting of turbodiesels, turbopetrols and hybrids. On the controversial turbodiesel side, a new modular 1.5-litre powerplant will be offered in various states of tune, while the 2.0-litre TDI seemingly remains part of the plan, too. As far as the petrol line-up goes, both 1.0- and 1.5-litre TSI units will be offered, again with varying outputs. It has, however, also been reported that Volkswagen is looking at reducing complexity in the model line-up, so don't expect the same extensive product range (at least in Europe), as is currently the case. No 10-speed DSG for Golf 8 GTI. A 7-speed dual-clutch 'box will likely continue but an overboost function is on the cards. Given the big contribution to overall Golf sales made by the GTI derivative, this iconic car seems to be evolving into a type of 鈥渟ub-brand鈥?of its own. Already there is talk of 3 derivatives being on the cards - a standard GTI, a Performance Pack and Clubsport. The target power output for the 鈥渂ase鈥?GTI is said to be the recent Clubsport鈥檚 195 kW.

It is rumoured that an overboost function provided by an electric motor mounted in the front section of the transmission is a possibility, effectively turning the next Golf GTI into a mild hybrid. The "flagship" Golf 8 GTI Clubsport could pack as much as 240 kW from its 2.0-litre turbopetrol. Golf GTI will continue to use an updated 7-speed DSG 'box. A 6-speed manual will remain available for purists. And what about Golf 8 R? Could the Golf GTE Sport concept's drivetrain be destined for the high-performance Golf R? With a big jump in power very likely for the Golf 8 GTI, the pricier Golf R will have to be something really special. At present it looks set to get either a 300 kW 2.0-litre turbopetrol, or a 3.0-litre VR6 engine with anything up to 370 kW! A third rumour suggests something very different, however - a plug-in hybrid set-up using a powerful turbopetrol mated with two rear-mounted electric motors. This setup was previewed on the Golf GTE Sport concept, shown above, and should also deliver around 300 kW. The hot tip, however, is for the Golf R to stick to the 2.0-litre motor.

Is This The Beginning Of The End?

Is This The Beginning Of The End?

Well, that鈥檚 it. No manual transmission for the powered-up Volkswagen Golf GTI range announced this week. Worse, this obituary follows news that the new Polo GTI will also be a DSG-only proposition. Is this the end, then, of the GTI鈥檚 enthusiast appeal? It鈥檚 perhaps an overreaction, then, to suggest we鈥檙e now one step closer to the 鈥楬 pattern鈥?becoming a strange glyph for future archaeologists to wonder at - but it does seem inevitable. After all, the number of people ordering manual-equipped Golf GTIs is now fewer than 10 per cent, according to Volkswagen Australia. The world doesn鈥檛 stop for single digits. In talking to us this morning, Paul Pottinger, communications manager for Volkswagen Australia, was adamant there is no longer a decent case to be made for a manual transmission in this latest iteration of the legendary, genuinely iconic Golf GTI. 鈥?Pottinger told our news team. Hell, even returning buyers tend to shift from manual to DSG, he claims. 鈥淚t鈥檚 quicker, it鈥檚 more efficient, and on the move we as humans just can鈥檛 change gears as quickly as that - whatever tactile enjoyment鈥?we might derive from it,鈥?Pottinger reckons.

At the other end of the performance market, buyers make the same call. Last year, former Porsche Australia communications boss Paul Ellis said even those who walk into the showroom wanting a manual end up leaving with the PDK auto. Because they know that鈥檚 the faster car, the more fuel-efficient car and probably the better car for resale,鈥?he said. Still, Porsche is at least committed to offering the choice. 鈥淎s long there is one customer that wants a manual, we will build it,鈥?Ellis promised. And that鈥檚 really what it comes down to for the enthusiast: choice. Indeed, my colleague Mike Costello rightly argues that part of our role at CarAdvice is to advocate for just that, regardless of the business decisions each brand must make. 鈥淲e aren鈥檛 here to support an OEM鈥檚 economic rationales - that鈥檚 their province and their concern. And that of their stakeholders,鈥?Costello says. 鈥淥ur job as auto media is to proactively advocate for the widest amount of consumer choice.

Volkswagen is reducing this, and its public relations team in Australia has worked to justify it. 鈥淏ut mine is to state what I see as CarAdvice鈥檚 role in all this: to agitate for maximum consumer choice. Where does that leave the remainder? One figures there can only be two groups left: those very understandably aggrieved in being the last of a dying breed, and those that are merely griping from the sidelines. The former will be forgotten as the world marches on - just like those who, more than a century ago, lamented the mass adoption of these stinky new-fangled automobiles - and the latter cannot logically figure in product planning. I spoke to Pottinger again later. 鈥淚t escapes some members of the specialist media fraternity (and even in 2018, a fraternity it almost exclusively remains) that we import cars in response to customer demand - not what they say customers should drive,鈥?he said. Do you mean, we鈥檙e not the perfect representation of the average buyer? Ouch. But鈥?fair call.

If it were only up to me, you鈥檇 all be driving black manual wagons with a turbocharged engine. The current 169kW Golf GTI is still around for a little while, and the Golf R still does a manual option, too. Or, you could just get over it. If you鈥檙e out to be the quickest, the automatic is usually the best option these days, and all this machismo around manuals being the real enthusiast鈥檚 choice is a bit of a wank, anyway. And remember, every four-cylinder hot hatch owner has had to hear the same type of bullshit from a V8 fan at some point, despite turbo fours often being the match of our most beloved muscle cars. Or, if Volkswagen has broken your heart with today鈥檚 announcement, listen to Costello and exercise your freedom of choice by heading elsewhere. There鈥檚 the incoming Megane RS, and Hyundai could do with some i30 N sales during this short but painful manual-only phase of its life. On the bright side, other options in a similar vein, such as the Toyota 86 and regular Subaru WRX, can still be had in both manual and automatic forms. In both cars, the manual to auto sales split is a healthy 60:40. Here鈥檚 hoping that ratio doesn鈥檛 swap. So. Buy any of those and maybe, just maybe, Volkswagen will make sure the Mk8 Golf GTI has a manual. Then we wouldn鈥檛 be staring at the apocalypse, after all.

This value in the new Golf GTI is exactly the same as that of the previous Golf R, which was powered by an engine from another TSI generation. Equipped in this way, the Golf GTI makes its appearance with impressive flexibility values: in fourth gear, the Volkswagen Golf GTI accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in 5.0 seconds; in fifth gear it takes 6.0 seconds. Other data that must not be overlooked in a GTI: the new one accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 246 km/h. 聲Stage 2 - Performance GTI: Those choosing a Golf GTI with the performance pack ignite the second stage. As mentioned, the car's power is increased by 10 PS here, while its maximum torque is identical. The 230 PS of power enables a top speed of 250 km/h and just 6.5 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h.
