Most Passats share the same suspension tuning, which is relatively taut and delivers good body control without feeling too harsh over rough pavement. Larger alloy wheels like the 19-inch units on the R-Design amplify road imperfections, so shop carefully if you live where the tarmac resembles the moon鈥檚 craters. Though the Passat鈥檚 suspension is more for comfortable touring than corner carving, its light, direct steering is a delight to hustle along on a curvy road. Instead, it鈥檚 the impact on how the V-6 sounds that鈥檚 the Passat GT鈥檚 biggest success, serving as a pleasant reminder of how nice free-revving, naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines are. The noise is sonorous, especially in the middle of the rev range, with a more prominent note from outside the car, too. Like the V-6-powered SEL, the Passat GT relies on a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic to send power to the front wheels. Standard wheel-mounted paddle shifters make driving in manual mode a more engaging way to exploit the DSG鈥檚 quick-shifting abilities. But those paddles, identical to the setup on the Passat R-Line, are small and don鈥檛 feel very premium. The Passat GT鈥檚 mild suspension modifications could have gone further. Not only is the 0.6-inch drop in ride height difficult to spot unless the GT is parked next to a standard model, but firmer springs and dampers have a negligible overall impact on how the car behaves. This is still a well-balanced car with a tight handling character and good body manners. The firmer suspension sacrifices some ride quality over rougher roads鈥攁 fact that鈥檚 no doubt enhanced by its standard 19-inch 鈥淭ornado鈥?wheels鈥攂ut ultimately, we aren鈥檛 talking about a dramatic change in ride comfort. The Passat GT still errs on the side of smoothness, doing a good job of balancing sporty desires with comfort demands.

With the R, I felt like I had already driven the car for weeks. The gearshift was also interesting. The feel in the hand was okay but not great; the knob felt a bit like a golf ball, which I can鈥檛 say I loved.





Unlike almost all other cars with a front-mounted transmission I鈥檝e driven, the shift linkage felt really good. It was way crisper and more notchy than I expected. There was one small curiosity about it, though: the lateral distance between gears 鈥?1st and 3rd / 3rd and 5th / 2nd and 4th / 4th and 6th 鈥?was very small. It was by no means a problem, but it was something I noticed every time I drove the car. All that said, even if the shift linkage was garbage, and even if the clutch was difficult, I鈥檓 still thankful that Volkwagen even offers a stick. I know that my time is running out with three-pedal cars, and I鈥檓 glad I don鈥檛 have to give up on my dream yet. When treated with a gentle foot, the Golf R is true to its humble economy car roots. It鈥檚 docile, reasonably quiet, and not too twitchy. The suspension is rougher than I appreciate; however, that鈥檚 par for the course when it comes to a performance car. The suspension is adjustable 鈥?and I did adjust it 鈥?but I never found it to be quite as compliant as I鈥檇 like.





The Golf R is one of the best point-and-shoot cars I鈥檝e ever driven. Perhaps the best. Even with my preferred but very-driver-involved transmission, the R goes where you ask it to. No matter how much throttle you give it. No matter what steering angle. No matter what speed. The Golf R figures it out. I took turns that were entirely too sharp, with entirely too much speed, giving the car entirely too much throttle, and there was no drama. Every single time. The R just ate it all up. In a straight line, the R is very fast; it will hit 60 MPH in just barely over 5 seconds with a skilled driver. The dual-clutch R, with its launch control, can do it in just under 5 seconds. All this in a car that can haul five people鈥?and a dresser. The only complaint I have is that the car definitely has turbo lag. If you stand on the throttle in the wrong gear, you鈥檒l be waiting for a while until the turbo spools; at which point, you get walloped in the back.





A smaller turbo (which would cost peak power), or more displacement (which would cost economy, among other things) would surely help alleviate lag. On the bright side, keeping the car in the meat of its power band encourages you to shift, which is the whole point of buying a stick in the first place. I could go on and on about how it felt to drive, but there鈥檚 little more to say. Every on- or off-ramp was a rollercoaster ride. The power of the R is, in some ways, its Achilles heel: you want to drive it at 11/10ths, and to do so will guarantee you are well outside of what is acceptable on public roads. So, coming back around to the beginning, what do I do about my BMW? When I drove the GTI, I was stupefied by how much car you got for the price. 40,680 MSRP. And in some ways, it felt like it should have been less. The lack of a sunroof is infuriating to me 鈥?at least give me the option, Volkswagen! While the R felt quite a bit more powerful than the GTI, it also felt like it was missing things for no discernible reason. Were I to buy a Golf R, I would miss the sunroof a lot. I鈥檇 miss it for easily six months of the year, if not more. Should I buy a GTI, I鈥檇 miss the Golf R鈥檚 power鈥?every time I drove my car. And, for the handful of snow storms Virginia gets each year, I鈥檇 miss the all wheel drive too. Given the life changes my family has been through lately, we鈥檙e currently exploring the possibility of being a one-car family.

A fraudster who used a computer virus to steal 拢450,000 from a business before blowing the money on handbags, jewellery and clothes, has been jailed. James Molloy from Liverpool used a malware infection to empty the bank account of an Australian technology company and transfer the money into his own account. He then went on a two day spending spree buying Rolex watches, a 拢37,900 diamond engagement ring, 拢8,160 Chanel handbags and 拢5,385 worth of 'Billionaire' clothing from Harrods. Molloy was arrested on March 24 at the passport office in Liverpool as he tried to apply for a passport in another name. After pleading guilty to nine charges of converting criminal property, he was jailed for two years and eight months at Southwark Crown Court. According to the City of London Police, officers were alerted to Molloy's activities following an Australian Federal Police tip-off. This is part 5 of my project to build a VW Beetle based Wizard Roadster. If you have any interest in Beetles, this will certainly interest you. There are loads of photos of the build. In this part, final blending in of the windscreen surround and rear body work take place, along with starting on the flip front and hidden door hinges. New Windscreen Surround - Blend it in for a smooth look. The windscreen surround was fitted in one of the previous installments on this project. It now has to be blended in to the rest of the bodywork. The new windscreen surround is made from fibreglass and actually sits over the lower part of the windscreen pillars. This means that on the scuttle area it is sitting proud of the surrounding metal. When it was fitted it was bonded on to the metal work with a special bonding agent.





I filled the area around the base of the new windscreen surround with a good quality flexible car body filler. This then has to be sanded and refilled and sanded again until you have a result that you are happy with. It is well worth spending a bit of time getting this perfect before moving on to other things. Any imperfections in this area will certainly show up when the car is sprayed. In this picture you can see the almost finished job. Spraying with a coat of paint will highlight any imperfections which can then be rectified. It is also worth fitting the bonnet at this time to ensure that the fit looks good. Blend In The Rear Bodywork - Obtain a smooth rear end! Once the windscreen surround is sorted it is time to move on to the rear end bodywork. Here you have a couple of choices to make.





Some people leave the rear wings separate as on a standard Beetle and then use the standard Beetle piping to finish off the joint. I was fitting wider fibreglass rears wings so decided to go for the totally smooth look and blend it all in by filling the joint between the panels. It is important if you are doing this to ensure that there will be no movement between the bodywork and the rear wing. If there is it will be sure to crack as soon as you put the car on the road. As I was fitting fibreglass rear wings these were bonded, and screwed on the the body work and then the joint was fibreglassed both inside and outside. Once I was happy that the wing and bodywork were joined fully I could then start on smoothing it out. Again a good quality flexible filler was used to finish off the join and allow final smoothing out.





Whilst most of the rear steel bulkhead is left in place, it is important that the gap between this and the new rear deck is closed off. This will also add strength to the rear deck so that damage is less likely if some clown decides to sit on it! I used a piece of 12mm plywood and bonded it on place. The picture shows the initial bonding, this was then fully glassed in on both sides once it was secure. Also whilst working in this area I used expanding foam to fill the gap inside the old inner wings. This will make this area stronger and will also help with sound deadening as it adds stiffness to the panel. Fibreglass was then laid over this between the new upper deck and the side panels. One word of caution here is that the resin used in the fibreglassing process can dissolve the expanding foam so you need to use just enough to wet the fibreglass matting to get it to cure. One way around this is to use a barrier between the two.

It loses the Alltrack鈥檚 lower plastic skid plate and has a sportier look than the stock piece. After its unceremonious and unexplained exit from the U.S. Golf in 1993, the GTI came roaring back in a big way for the 1995 model year. Sure, it was bigger, bulkier and well鈥oundier, but it came with a bunch more gusto thanks to the addition of the VR6 motor as seen in the Corrado and Passat models. The single-overhead cam, twelve valve head lacked the race-bred feel of the Mk.II 16V, the new motor more than made up for it with the addition of two more cylinders. Good for 172 horsepower and 173 lb.ft of torque, it swept the hot hatch from 0-60 in 7.1 seconds and produced a 15.5 second quarter mile at over 90 mph. But much like the original, the GTI was more than the sum of its numbers, with drivers enjoying the great 6-cylinder soundtrack which accompanied the waves of usable torque. Of course, like all VWs from the period, it was expensive.





20 grand. Yet that was still only a little more than half the money it would take you to grab a same-year M3, which offered only a bit more motivation and cornering prowess. Catch the pesky BMW driver off-guard, and they鈥檇 be unlikely to easily out-drag you. So you could either look at this model as a really expensive Golf or a really cheap BMW. There鈥檚 also competition at this price point, from the Corrado to the E36 M3. But if you want to stand slightly apart in a special car that鈥檚 fun to drive yet practical, you could do a lot worse than this GTI.

So when it comes to fun, the GTI still holds the crown. Once you move away from the obvious benefit of a sportier model, you find yourself debating the more practical features. Most of the Rabbits were built in the U.S., in a plant in Westmoreland, PA. They were spunky little creatures with four-speed manual gearboxes but unfortunately were fragile compared to the anvil-like reliability of the Beetle. Not long after the Rabbit鈥檚 introduction, Volkswagen introduced the GTI, a higher performance version with 110 horsepower, or 43 more horses than the standard version. Later versions also came with a five-speed stick.





GTI stands for Grand Tourer Injection, referring to the engine鈥檚 fuel injection. By today鈥檚 lights, those early GTIs were brittle and shaky. But they captured the imagination of small-car enthusiasts with limited incomes. It is fair to say that the GTI was the progenitor of what came to be known as the 鈥渉ot hatch鈥?niche in the market. In the mid-1980s, the Rabbit name went away and the U.S. Golf. From then on, the performance models, with two- and four-door versions, became the Golf GTI. Now with the four-door only 2019 model, the Rabbit name is back, though now with one of those interminable names that decorate cars from German manufacturers. The 2.0T, of course, describes its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which makes 228-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. With its slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox, it can nail 60 mph from rest in about six seconds. The Rabbit Edition is a bit of a bare bones version of the GTI, slotted between the base S and SE, with more trim than the S but less equipment than the SE and top-line Autobahn model.





On the road, handling is sharp with quick moves around curves and solid straight-line tracking. The suspension system soaks up road irregularities to deliver a ride that is stiff but supple. Road and engine noise are mostly muted for fatigue-free Interstate cruising. Missing from the Rabbit are a sunroof, automatic climate control and SXM satellite radio, which is not available on any GTI trim level. That reflects the trend toward streaming audio. Equipment includes an AM-FM radio and one USB port for streaming capability. The Rabbit comes with basic safety equipment, including a crash response system and electronic brake assist, but lacks such advanced features as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. One of the more endearing features of the Rabbit Edition are its sport seats up front and accommodating passenger seats in back. The upholstery is a substantial cloth with an attractive plaid design that grips the torso. It is augmented by aggressive bolstering on the front seats that encourages spirited motoring on twisting mountain roads. In back, two passengers sit comfortably with generous head and knee room. There is a seatbelt for a third passenger, who deserves pity for sitting scrunched on a hard cushion straddling a big floor hump with knees banging on the intruding front console. But hey.
