Cadillac Escalade Gets Bold New Look With New Sport Edition

The 2019 Escalade has been given the blacked-out treatment.

Just in time for the LA Auto Show, Cadillac has introduced a new Sport Edition of the Escalade featuring a bold new look. Available for the Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum models, the new Sport package applies a gloss black exterior trim to the front grilles, window surrounds, body side moldings and more, as well as a unique Midnight Silver finish on the standard 22-inch wheels. It marks the first special edition available for the current generation Cadillac Escalade.

Pricing for the 2019 Cadillac Escalade Sport Edition is set at $84,790 including destination charges. Alternatively, the Sport Edition package can be purchased separately for $2,700, with orders starting in Q1 2019.

“Two decades after its introduction, the Escalade remains the segment’s benchmark and sales leader,” said Steve Carlisle, Cadillac president. “The Sport Edition extends that momentum in response to customer and dealer demand for a dark and aggressive look.”

Since it’s just a styling package, the Escalade’s mechanics have been left unchanged. That means the large SUV is still powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that delivers 420 hp, propelling the Escalade from 0-62 mph in less than six seconds. It’s also available in both 2WD and 4WD configurations and features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the company’s latest infotainment system, and Magnetic Ride Control suspension.

The additional features of the 2019 Cadillac Escalade include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the company’s latest infotainment system that offers pretty much every connectivity option available, Magnetic Ride Control suspension, a 16-speaker Bose Centerpoint audio system and more.

Cadillac is expected to reveal the all-new redesigned Escalade next year. Reports suggest it will have an evolutionary design, retain the current model’s 6.2-liter, 420-hp V8, and share the same platform as the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

Can't Afford A BMW M2? Here Are Some Cheaper Alternatives

A compact performance coupe doesn't have to cost over $50,000.

Even though it is just the "baby M car," we think the BMW M2 may be the best model the company makes at the moment. The M2 certainly offers the best purist experience of the current M lineup, since the other M cars have all become larger and heavier. Even though it is the cheapest M car on the market, the M2 still starts at a whopping $54,500 and will only get more expensive with the addition of a Competition version. Nearly $55,000 sounds like a lot to pay for a 365 horsepower sport coupe. Thankfully, there are plenty of cheaper used alternatives.

Porsche 911 Carrera (997 gen)

The M2 sits at the bottom of the M car lineup, but for much less, budget conscious buyers can scoop up a flagship Porsche. For less than $40,000, it is possible to find a 997.1 generation 911 Carrera or Carrera S. The base 3.6-liter flat-six produces less power than the M2: just 325 hp. We also found more powerful Carrera S models with the larger 3.8-liter flat-six, producing 355 hp. Though it won't match the M2 on interior technology, the 911 is one of the purest driving experiences on the market and the 997 generation is arguably one of the best. You may want to invest in a mount for your smartphone because Porsche's infotainment was pretty lackluster in this generation.

Cadillac ATS-V Coupe

Buyers who want something a little more modern can opt for our next choice, the Cadillac ATS-V coupe. The ATS-V has only been around since 2016, but prices have already plummeted to just above $40,000. We found ATS-V coupe and sedans in the low $40,000 price range with the six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic. Power comes from a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 464 hp. Not even the upcoming M2 Competition will be able to match the ATS-V on power, and the Cadillac is larger if you need more space.

Audi TT RS

Even though they are actually very different, the Audi TT RS is often compared to the BMW M2. The current TT RS is more powerful than the M2 thanks to its 400 hp 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine, but it is more expensive starting at around $65,000. Luckily, used examples of the previous generation TT RS can be found starting at around half the price. The old TT RS still produces 360 hp from its five-cylinder engine, and unlike the new model it is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Nissan 370Z

If you go crazy with the options sheet, it is possible to buy a Nissan 370Z for around the same price as the M2. We like the 370Z, but it is starting to feel old and we wouldn't recommend buying a brand-new one. A used one is a different story. The cheapest examples we found started at less than $15,000, and the prices went higher as the age and mileage shrank. The 3.7-liter V6 engine produces 332 hp, or 350 hp in the Nismo version. Unlike the M2, the 370Z is strictly a two-seater, which could be what certain buyers are looking for from their small coupe.

BMW 135i

The M2 Competition will finally fix one of the biggest complains with the standard M2; it doesn't have a bespoke M engine. The N55 in the M2 is a great engine, but it is used in plenty of other BMW models, including our final used alternative. The BMW 135i was originally sold with the twin-turbo N54 inline-six, but was later upgraded to the N55. We recommend trying to find the rare 135is, which produced 320 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. With some minor tuning, the 135is should be able to keep up with the far more expensive M2 (at least in a straight line).

Buick Still Believes That Americans Will Buy The Regal Wagon

The company has even raised its projections for wagon sales.

Wagon sales have been on an enormous decline in the US. American consumers don't have fond memories of road trips in their parent's wood-paneled station wagons as children. While these types of wagons have now become ironically cool, they were about as cool as minivans are today. There are still some amazing wagon models that are available in the US because companies like Volvo are keeping the wagon alive. Buick is also placing its bets on wagons. Automotive News reports that the company has increased its forecast for wagon sales.

Buick has completely redesigned the Regal for the 2018 model year. The sedan body style is gone, and in its place are the Sportback and TourX models. The Sportback looks like a traditional sedan on the surface, but it has a liftback hatch design like the Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and Kia Stinger. The more interesting option is the TourX, which is a traditional station wagon. Buick is ready to put its faith in the TourX and expects that the wagon will account for 50% of Regal sales. This is up from Buick's initial projections of 30%. We hope that Buick is right, because we'd like to see more wagons in the US.

We're pretty realistic about where the car market's at, but we're getting some pretty good feedback on it," Phil Brook, U.S. vice president of marketing for Buick and GMC said during a media drive event. Buick hopes that the TourX will help distinguish the Regal in a crowded midsize segment. The Regal wagon could help draw buyers away from Subaru, Audi and Volvo. "It really is a head-turner" Brook said. "We're not an old-man sedan brand anymore. We're very much a cutting-edge SUV brand with some really good sedans to back that up." The Regal TourX starts at $29,995, which is around $4,000 more than the Sportback.

The TourX is available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo generating 250 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, Buick has no plans to sell the TourX with the more powerful V6 engine from the Regal GS. Even though wagons were once known as the boring family runabout, that boring role has been taken over by SUVs and minivans. This frees the wagon up to be something more unique, and in our opinion, cool.

2019 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe Will Cost $4,000 More Than The Current Model

But it will come with more standard equipment.

Cadillac is allegedly axing the ATS-V Coupe after the next model year along with the CTS and XTS, but don’t expect the price to be slashed for its final year before it bows out.

According to CarsDirect, the 2019 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe will carry an MSRP of $68,790 including the destination charge – that’s a $4,000 increase over the current 2018 model. However, while it may be more expensive than the outgoing model, it’s actually better value. As standard, the 2019 ATS-V Coupe will now come with the Carbon Fiber Package, which was previously a $5,000 optional extra.

The package adds some sporty exterior elements including a carbon fiber hood vent trim, a front splitter and rear diffuser, and a more aerodynamic rear spoiler and composite rocker extensions. Other than that, the 2019 model will essentially be the same as the current model.

Under the hood will be the same 3.6-liter V6 as before, producing 464 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual will be offered as standard, or you can equip an optional eight-speed automatic for an extra $2,000.

At $68,790, the ATS-V will be around $19,000 cheaper than its larger sibling, the 2019 CTS-V sedan, which starts at $87,990. As CarsDirect notes, the new price will position the ATS-V closer to its main rival. It will cost $295 higher than the 2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 coupe but $1,355 less than the 2019 BMW M4. It will, however, be $475 more expensive than the 2019 Corvette Grand Sport.

If you’ve been thinking of buying an ATS-V, now might be a good time to take the plunge as there are some good deals available for the 2018 model. According to CarsDirect, you could save as much as $6,000 in dealer incentives.

The Cadillac ATS Sedan Is Officially Dead

Cadillac tells is that 2018 will the ATS Sedan's final production year.

We’ve known since December that the Cadillac ATS sedan had an uncertain future. Earlier today, there were some reports coming out claiming the ATS Sedan was no longer listed on GM's fleet order guide, although the ATS Coupe and ATS-V Coupe were still there. So we reached out directly to Cadillac to get to the bottom of this and we can now officially confirm that 2018 will the final model year for the ATS Sedan. The ATS Coupe, however, isn't going anywhere. At least for the time being.

In an email conversation with Cadillac communications specialist Donny Nordlicht, we were told that "Production of the ATS Sedan is ending due to extensive plant upgrades, expansion and re-tooling to prepare for the next generation of Cadillac sedans. Cadillac's future sedan portfolio will consist of three sedans, positioned in different segments and clearly differentiated by size and price." If you recall, in March previous Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen said that a compact CT5 sedan, priced in the $35,000 to $45,000 range, was on the horizon. Launching such a vehicle would enable the CT6 to continue moving upmarket. This potential CT5 would be built on a rear-wheel drive platform.

Another reason why the ATS Sedan is finished is slow sales. Last year, just 13,100 examples were sold: that's coupe and sedan combined. In 2016, that figure was 21,505. The ATS Sedan's best and debut year, 2013, saw 38,319 examples sold. It’s been downhill from there. Meanwhile, the ATS and ATS-V Coupe, which are on a later life cycle, will continue into 2019. At the moment, the ATS Sedan, we can also confirm, is still on dealership lots, as its "Production rate and inventory levels are being managed to ensure retails sales availability through the end of the year." At the New York Auto Show this past March, Cadillac launched its all-new XT4 SUV, which is part of the brand's 10-year plan that will see the debut of several new models.

2020 Cadillac Escalade Could Have Some Interesting Engine Options

It's time to move on from the small block V8. Or is it?

Welcome to 2020. SUVs are still alive and selling extremely well, as are pickup trucks. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs are more abundant than ever, but America will always be America when it comes to loving its trucks and SUVs. Fortunately, automakers learned years prior how to make these once gas guzzlers more efficient with technologies like downsizing and turbocharging, and electrification.

But it was only in 2018 when the fourth generation Cadillac Escalade came with only one engine: a thirsty 6.2-liter small block V8. What was Cadillac thinking only six years prior when the now previous generation Escalade launched? Only one engine option and it’s naturally aspirated?

Wow, glad we’re living in 2020, right? Jump back in time now to 2018 and a report from Cadillac Society claims GM is planning to offer the next generation Cadillac Escalade, due for 2020, with at least three engine options. What could they be? Cadillac isn’t talking details, but Cadillac Society learned of the three engine approach from unnamed sources, but the rumor doesn’t sound too farfetched. A few engine possibilities include the current 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp remaining the base option, though it’d likely receive a few upgrades.

Another possibility is Cadillac’s new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8, making its debut right now in the refreshed 2019 CT6 sedan. It’s rated up to 550 hp and would likely be paired up with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The third option is, of course, a plug-in hybrid setup with the powertrain also coming from the CT6, specifically the PHEV version.

For now, Cadillac won’t confirm details, but we’ll likely have some answers in the coming months because the 2020 Escalade will likely debut sometime in 2019. Detroit is one possibility, but we think the New York Auto Show in April will be the chosen venue. After all, New York City is also home to Cadillac’s global headquarters.

Here's Why Cadillac Fears The New Lincoln Navigator

For the first time in a decade the Navigator is competitive.

For years it was the Cadillac Escalade that defined SUV bling and did so splendidly. But it was the Lincoln Navigator, when it first debuted way back in 1997, that kicked off this whole luxury large SUV segment. Cadillac quickly caught up and while Lincoln made do with the occasional Navigator refresh, the Escalade was regularly redesigned. But things are different today with the arrival of an entirely new Navigator. As it turns out, Cadillac is kind of worried about it.

Bloomberg has learned that GM is now offering a $5,000 discount on new Cadillac Escalades in an effort to seduce potential Navigator buyers – but it’s only for current Lincoln owners. For this month, any current Lincoln owner who trades in a 1999 or newer model will benefit from Cadillac’s discount. Yes, the Escalade has extremely loyal buyers who trade them in regularly for the redesigned model, but now Cadillac wants those Navigator owners too. Remember, this is the first time the Navigator has been completely redesigned in 15 years, so naturally current Navigator owners are going to be curious about what’s new. Cadillac wants to eliminate that curiosity by dangling a $5,000 discount.

Of course, $5k really isn’t all that much considering the base price for the Escalade is already over $75,000. This segment of buyers isn’t particularly concerned about money, but everyone loves getting a good deal. Those who’ve driven the new Navigator are reporting that it’ll definitely give the Escalade a run for its money, so it won’t be all that long until it’s redesigned once again. But for now, Cadillac is concerned about the Navigator’s arrival. It'll be interesting to see if the discount works.
