While the ATS is one of Cadillac’s best-selling sedans, sales have seen a sharp decline in recent years paving the way for its demise. US sales for the ATS have fallen each year since the model’s first full year on the market in 2013. In the first 11 months of 2017, ATS sales are down 37.5 percent compared to the same period last year. November was the worst month in the model’s history since it was introduced in September 2012, with only 831 ATS models sold. According to Carsalesbase, a combined total of 21,505 ATS sedans and coupes were sold last year which is significantly less than the 38,319 units that were sold in 2013.

Cadillac refused to comment on the leaked information. However, a few months ago the company’s president Johan de Nysschen announced that the brand is planning to “rebalance its sedan portfolio” which will lead to the the ATS, CTS and XTS sedan all being axed. To streamline its sedan range, all three models will eventually be replaced with the new CT5, which will have a starting price of around $35,000. Cadillac is also planning to introduce another entry-level sedan to rival the Audi A3 and future Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan. According to the leaked documents, the CT6 will also lose its base 2.0-liter turbo engine for the 2019 model year.

This means that the 3.6-liter V6 will become the new entry-level model. The 2.0-liter turbo will still be used in the hybrid version, though, while the CTS and XTS won’t receive any changes for the 2019 model year if the leak turns out to be true.

Combined with sluggish ATS sales, Cadillac is becoming more reliant upon crossovers to bring home the big bucks. De Nysschen also reiterated to Jalopnik sales of the XT5 crossover are doing well. Combined with the XT4, Cadillac will hopefully find itself in better financial shape. “The XT5 is doing very nicely thank you, it’s the third-best selling luxury nameplate in the U.S. after the Lexus RX, and the Mercedes C-Class,” de Nysschen said. “But the irony is not lost on me that the C-Class is a sedan.” Fortunately, de Nysschen clearly gets the whole performance thing, but as a business, Cadillac has no choice but to offer crossovers.

“But product is at the core, and therefore, some models are conceived specifically to generate broad volume, and others have a far more specific duty,” de Nysschen added. “We’re absolutely not abandoning those performance cars.”

Cadillac Planning Small Sedan To Battle The Audi A3 And BMW 2 Series

Because performance sedans still matter.

Well over a year ago, we learned that Cadillac was developing a small, rear-wheel drive sedan that would compete head-on with the likes of the Audi A3, BMW 2 Series, and Mercedes-Benz CLA. Obviously we were all for it, especially since Cadillac previously hinted the BMW 3 Series fighting ATS may not live to see a redesign. And then the new sedan news stopped. Instead, we kept hearing about the upcoming XT4 crossover, slated to debut next week at the New York Auto Show.

Fortunately, Jalopnik recently spoke with Cadillac CEO Johan De Nysschen who provided an update on the sedan’s progress. "It will certainly lap the Nurburgring faster than anyone of our competitors in that category," De Nysschen said. Rear-wheel drive will be standard, unlike the CLA and A3, both with all-wheel drive. In fact, the CLA rides on a front-wheel drive platform, so it’s cool Cadillac is going all-out here. Quite frankly, we are both thrilled and surprised Cadillac is proceeding with this sedan at all. How come? Because sedan sales haven’t exactly been a bright spot lately. We already know the next generation CTS and XTS will likely merge into a single vehicle, expected to be called the CT5.

Combined with sluggish ATS sales, Cadillac is becoming more reliant upon crossovers to bring home the big bucks. De Nysschen also reiterated to Jalopnik sales of the XT5 crossover are doing well. Combined with the XT4, Cadillac will hopefully find itself in better financial shape. “The XT5 is doing very nicely thank you, it’s the third-best selling luxury nameplate in the U.S. after the Lexus RX, and the Mercedes C-Class,” de Nysschen said. “But the irony is not lost on me that the C-Class is a sedan.” Fortunately, de Nysschen clearly gets the whole performance thing, but as a business, Cadillac has no choice but to offer crossovers.

“But product is at the core, and therefore, some models are conceived specifically to generate broad volume, and others have a far more specific duty,” de Nysschen added. “We’re absolutely not abandoning those performance cars.”

GM May Be Next To Cut Sedan Range

The Cadillac ATS sedan has recently been axed but three sedans remain with a new model due in 2020 that will replace both the ATS and CTS. So, while they haven’t disappeared just yet, the range is shrinking and Cadillac’s SUV offerings are growing. For now, though, no official announcements have been made but the days of the traditional sedan, at least in the US, are numbered.

2017 Cadillac CTS-V Sedan Review

With its supercharged Corvette derived V8 and ultra-sharp chassis the CTS-V is Cadillac’s answer to the brace of mega-horsepower European sport sedans that sit at the top of their respective ranges. Not much was wrong with this formula last year and for 2017 the changes are minimal.

What’s it like inside?

Based on the regular CTS sedan the CTS-V adds another layer of luxury with a sprinkling of sporting intent. The front seats are aggressively sculpted with wide side bolsters and the materials used throughout the cabin are on par with the best offerings in its class. Controls and switchgear are quality items to although having to scroll through the touchscreen to access basic functions can be frustrating. The last word in fit and finish still belong to the Europeans but the differences are so small few would notice.

The wraparound cabin design ensconces the front occupants while still offering plenty of space, this does not extend to the rear where taller passengers will be rubbing elbows and wishing for some more head and knee room. The cargo area is tight too, folding down rear seats will help when travelling two up but the trunk is one of the smallest in its class.

What about the performance?

The Cadillac CTS-V comes with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 producing 640 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. These are big numbers, bigger than the competition and Cadillac claim a 0-60 mph time of 3.7-seconds which is class-leading too. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential, the sole transmission option is a smooth shifting 8-speed automatic.

Some competitors like BMW’s M5 feature a dual-clutch transmission but the CTS-V gives up little on shift speeds and remains smooth when crawling through traffic, something dual clutch systems are not always great at. The next M5 is rumored to be fitted with a conventional automatic too so the CTS-V may well be ahead of the curve on this one.

The CTS-V acquits itself well on the track too. Despite its bulk it trades punches with some very fast rivals and the supercharger offers instant pick-up from extremely low engine speeds providing for seamless acceleration out of tight bends.

What are my options?

The CTS-V is available in one comprehensive trim level with a number of options available to enhance the specifications.

Standard performance items include magnetic ride control, electronic limited-slip differential, high performance summer tires witted to 19-inch alloys and a performance traction management system incorporating launch control. Recaro performance seats and a data logger are available options.

Safety specifications include a Teenager driver system (allowing monitoring and control of various vehicle behaviors), lane keep assist and departure warning, forward collision alert, front curb view camera, automatic parking assist and rear cross traffic alert.

Luxury and technology items such as heated and ventilated power front seats, remote start and keyless entry, Apple CarPlay integration, wireless charging and head-up display are also all standard fitment. A Luxury Package further adds a rear camera mirror (streams HD view of what is behind vehicle to the rear view mirror), split-folding rear seat and heated rear seats.

Other available packages include the Carbon Fiber Package (Carbon trim kit) and Advanced Security Package (locking wheel nuts and laminated glass) some of which are available individually as well.

The Verdict

The Cadillac CTS-V takes the best traits of the European sports sedan and adds a distinctly American flavored big V8 into the mix. The result is a characterful and highly capable offering. Interior space may be a bit compromised in the rear and ultimate luxury levels may not quite match the best but the CTS-V excels where it counts and come highly recommended.

We’ve known since December that the Cadillac ATS sedan had an uncertain future. Earlier today, there were some reports coming out claiming the ATS Sedan was no longer listed on GM's fleet order guide, although the ATS Coupe and ATS-V Coupe were still there. So we reached out directly to Cadillac to get to the bottom of this and we can now officially confirm that 2018 will the final model year for the ATS Sedan. The ATS Coupe, however, isn't going anywhere. At least for the time being.

In an email conversation with Cadillac communications specialist Donny Nordlicht, we were told that "Production of the ATS Sedan is ending due to extensive plant upgrades, expansion and re-tooling to prepare for the next generation of Cadillac sedans. Cadillac's future sedan portfolio will consist of three sedans, positioned in different segments and clearly differentiated by size and price." If you recall, in March previous Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen said that a compact CT5 sedan, priced in the $35,000 to $45,000 range, was on the horizon. Launching such a vehicle would enable the CT6 to continue moving upmarket. This potential CT5 would be built on a rear-wheel drive platform.
