While the ATS is one of Cadillac’s best-selling sedans, sales have seen a sharp decline in recent years paving the way for its demise. US sales for the ATS have fallen each year since the model’s first full year on the market in 2013. In the first 11 months of 2017, ATS sales are down 37.5 percent compared to the same period last year. November was the worst month in the model’s history since it was introduced in September 2012, with only 831 ATS models sold. According to Carsalesbase, a combined total of 21,505 ATS sedans and coupes were sold last year which is significantly less than the 38,319 units that were sold in 2013.

Cadillac refused to comment on the leaked information. However, a few months ago the company’s president Johan de Nysschen announced that the brand is planning to “rebalance its sedan portfolio” which will lead to the the ATS, CTS and XTS sedan all being axed. To streamline its sedan range, all three models will eventually be replaced with the new CT5, which will have a starting price of around $35,000. Cadillac is also planning to introduce another entry-level sedan to rival the Audi A3 and future Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan. According to the leaked documents, the CT6 will also lose its base 2.0-liter turbo engine for the 2019 model year.

This means that the 3.6-liter V6 will become the new entry-level model. The 2.0-liter turbo will still be used in the hybrid version, though, while the CTS and XTS won’t receive any changes for the 2019 model year if the leak turns out to be true.

Mid-Engine Corvette C8 Could Get 4.2-Liter Cadillac V8

Looks like the new Cadillac CT6 V-Sport could give us an early preview of the mid-engine Corvette’s 4.2-liter V8.

This week saw the surprise reveal of the Cadillac CT6 V-Sport sedan packing a 4.2-liter, twin-turbo V8 developing a hefty 550 horsepower. But while the Cadillac engine is all new, it’s not the first time we’ve heard of a 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 from General Motors. Remember the long-rumored mid-engine Corvette? Last year, a leaked HIS Markit document referenced the Corvette as well as a 4.2-liter V8 on the options list. Specifically, the document mentioned production of a 4.2-liter V8 starting in 2019 for a car expected to be the mid-engine Corvette.

The fact the CT6 was announced with a 4.2-liter V8 seems to support this, so there’s a strong possibility the upcoming mid-engine Corvette will pack the same engine. A post on Corvette Forum provides further evidence the new mid-engine Corvette will get the Cadillac’s 4.2-liter V8. Despite its big dual overhead cam heads, the unit’s “hot V” design has turbochargers mounted between the heads to eliminate turbo lag and reduce the engine’s overall size, resulting in a very compact design. Furthermore, the engine will be built at GM’s Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky, which happens to be the same location where the Corvette is built.

However, last year’s rumors suggested the 4.2-liter V8 would produce over 650 hp in the Corvette, but the Cadillac engine falls short of this with a 550-horsepower rating. That said, the 4.2-liter V8 would be the base model, and 550 horsepower in a mid-engine sports car wouldn’t exactly be slow. Reports suggest a larger 5.5-liter V8 will also be offered packing a maximum output of 850 horsepower. Unfortunately, we probably won’t see the mid-engine Corvette until the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. In the meantime, the Cadillac CT6 could give us an early preview of one of the engines it will use.

Automatic Braking Technology Could Cut Crashes In Half

No wonder why so many automakers are including it as standard.

Just a few years ago, AAA conducted a test of automatic braking systems and warned consumers not to trust them entirely. The effectiveness of systems varies greatly from model to model and brand to brand but have been greatly improved in recent years. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) just conducted a test of General Motors vehicles equipped with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. The test found that forward collision greatly reduced the risk of having a crash and combining it with automatic emergency braking had an even more significant effect.

According to the IIHS, GM cars with auto braking and forward collision warning had 43 % fewer police-reported front-to-rear crashes and 64% fewer front-to-rear crashes with injuries compared to vehicles without either system. In vehicles with forward collision warning only, front-to-rear crashes were reduced by 17% while front-to-rear crashes with injuries were reduced by 30%.

Clearly, giving the car the ability to brake on its own without driver interaction has proved to be much safer. "The evidence has been mounting that front crash prevention works, and it works even better when it doesn't solely rely on a response from the driver," said Jessica Cicchino, IIHS vice president for research.

The data from this study mirrored an earlier IIHS study of Acura, Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, and Volvo vehicles, which found that the combination of forward collision warning and auto braking cut down crashes by half and crashes with injuries by 56%. The same study showed that collision warning without auto braking only cut down accidents by 27% and 20% respectively.

We test a lot of new cars, many of which are fitted with these systems. While we appreciate what these systems do, they can sometimes be a bit overcautious for our liking. In our opinion, drivers could just pay a bit more attention to the road, though even we must admit we've been saved by auto braking at some point.

GM To Idle 5 Car Plants Next Month: Could Production In Mexico Be Next?

Ford responded to the changing times by idling plants and now The Detroit News is reporting that GM plans to do the same. A total of five plants will take a few weeks off in January 2017. The Detroit Newsalso reports that GM is eliminating the second shift at its Detroit-Hamtrack facility. That plant makes the Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac CT6 and Buick Lacrosse.

The Detroit News says that killing off the second shift at Detroit-Hamtrack will leave almost 1,300 jobless, although GM is going to try and place those affected in jobs at other plants nearby. In addition to losing its second shift the facility will take three weeks off in January. Kansas City’s Fairfax Assembly Plant, which makes the Chevy Malibu, will also close for three weeks to start the year. Other plants set to be idled include the home of the Camaro and Cadillac CTS/ATS, Lansing Grand River. Workers there will get a forced two-week vacation. Ohio’s Lordstown Assembly Plant and Kentucky’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant round out the group and will each be closed for a week in January. The former makes the Cruze and the latter the Corvette.

Like Ford, GM is idling its plants to match a swing in demand. The Detroit News says the automaker has a massive supply of cars stretching 105 days. The Lacrosse has a 168-day supply! If those figures are too abstract than a quick look at the sales numbers from November will tell you all you need to know. Every car on that list, save for the Malibu and Volt, are down on sales compared to 2015. The Lacrosse is down 36.3%! The fact that the second shift at the Volt’s plant was eliminated tells you that GM expects a downturn in demand. Same thing for the three-week idle at the Malibu’s factory. With this news it wouldn't be a shock if GM started to consider shifting small car production abroad a la Ford. That would really piss off President Trump, huh?

Chevrolet Corvette Could Still Get Cadillac's New V8

All thanks to some clever engineering.

Amid the hubbub of global reveals at the 2018 New York International Auto Show Cadillac quietly stole the thunder with the 2019 CT6 V-Sport and its Mercedes-esque 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8. The introduction of GM’s first DOHC V8 engine in a quarter-of-a-century kicked off a litany of speculation surrounding its use in upcoming Corvette projects, along with the engine’s potential for different displacements, natural aspiration, or another form of forced induction.

“The LTA was designed from the ground up with turbos in mind,” Cadillac V8 chief engineer Jordan Lee told GM Authority on the New York show floor. “Think of it as a point solution for Cadillac. It’s a purpose-built and designed engine for the CT6 V-Sport.” Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen has even gone so far as to proclaim that Corvette is never getting this engine, but that could prove to be more sematics than substance, when it comes to differing displacements or components. While the new 4.2-liter LTA V8 engine is unlikely to ditch its hot V turbos any time soon, Lee did note that his team could certainly engineer the engine to work without turbos if it was needed.

He also added that the engine’s torque curve isn’t finished being shaped and that the architecture most definitely has the appetite for more power. “This engine has two fuel pumps, but can have as many as four,” said Lee, who also oversaw the development of GM’s current family of small block V8s, including the 6.2L LT1, LT4, and LT5. With 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque offered up as the motor’s opening salvo, it’s fair to assume this new DOHC V8 could have the potential to give the world's best a real run for its money.

2020 Cadillac Escalade Could Have Some Interesting Engine Options

It's time to move on from the small block V8. Or is it?

Welcome to 2020. SUVs are still alive and selling extremely well, as are pickup trucks. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs are more abundant than ever, but America will always be America when it comes to loving its trucks and SUVs. Fortunately, automakers learned years prior how to make these once gas guzzlers more efficient with technologies like downsizing and turbocharging, and electrification.

But it was only in 2018 when the fourth generation Cadillac Escalade came with only one engine: a thirsty 6.2-liter small block V8. What was Cadillac thinking only six years prior when the now previous generation Escalade launched? Only one engine option and it’s naturally aspirated?

Wow, glad we’re living in 2020, right? Jump back in time now to 2018 and a report from Cadillac Society claims GM is planning to offer the next generation Cadillac Escalade, due for 2020, with at least three engine options. What could they be? Cadillac isn’t talking details, but Cadillac Society learned of the three engine approach from unnamed sources, but the rumor doesn’t sound too farfetched. A few engine possibilities include the current 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp remaining the base option, though it’d likely receive a few upgrades.

Another possibility is Cadillac’s new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8, making its debut right now in the refreshed 2019 CT6 sedan. It’s rated up to 550 hp and would likely be paired up with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The third option is, of course, a plug-in hybrid setup with the powertrain also coming from the CT6, specifically the PHEV version.

For now, Cadillac won’t confirm details, but we’ll likely have some answers in the coming months because the 2020 Escalade will likely debut sometime in 2019. Detroit is one possibility, but we think the New York Auto Show in April will be the chosen venue. After all, New York City is also home to Cadillac’s global headquarters.
