For those of you planning on serving fruit at the party, you should consider making a super cute watermelon baby carriage. This fun centerpiece is really easy to make and guaranteed to make your guests smile. Helping plan a baby shower for my sister's friend, I was given the task of creating a watermelon baby carriage. Although this was my first time making one, I was really pleased with the way it turned out. If you wish to create this unique centerpiece for your party, read further to find a list of supplies you will need and step-by-step directions. The best thing about making a watermelon baby carriage is how it serves as both fun table decor and a cute fruit basket. To give it a splash of color, choose a variety of fruits to fill the inside of your carriage.
For our centerpiece, we used red and green seedless grapes, strawberries, oranges, and of course lots of watermelon. Check out the table to the right for a list of additional fruits you can add to your centerpiece. To keep the fruit fresh, it is best to make this centerpiece the night before or the day of the baby shower. Be sure to keep it cool in a refrigerator or insulated cooler until your guests arrive. If the shower is outside, you may want to put a container of ice under the watermelon to keep the fruit from becoming too warm. Below you will find a list of supplies and directions for making a watermelon baby carriage. Make a baby to place in your carriage. Use a cantaloupe as the head and attach grapes for the eyes. Slice a strawberry to add the lips. Attach a ribbon along the outside the edge of the carriage opening or just make a bow for the top of the watermelon. Make a string of toys out of fondant and hang from the top part of the carriage.
Use baby themed cookie cutters to cut out shapes from fruit and place inside and outside of watermelon carriage. Place watermelon on baking pan with bottom side up. Cut a thin layer off to make a stable base for the centerpiece and to prevent it from rolling off the table. Turn watermelon around and use marker or pen to outline the opening of the baby carriage. You will also need to draw the outline of the handle on the top of the part you are cutting out. Using a sharp knife, cut along the outside of the marked lines. Carefully push knife down about 2 inches and slowly follow outline. Once the outline is done, cut through the watermelon to be able to detach the top part of the carriage. Gently lift the opening of the watermelon and smooth out the edges. Cut or scoop the watermelon out and put in a separate container.
If you did not purchase a seedless watermelon, you will also need to remove the seeds. Keep removing the watermelon until you are left with a thin layer of red along the inside of the carriage. If desired, cut small triangles along the carriage opening to create a cute decorative edge for your fruit basket. Finish cutting out the carriage handle from the top part of the watermelon. You will need to cut the inner triangle first and gently pop out. Next cut around the outside of the handle and trim away the watermelon. Insert 2 toothpicks at the bottom of the handle and attach it to the inside of the carriage. Gently push in the toothpicks to secure and cut the excess off with a pair of scissors. To make the wheels, I used 4 orange slices and attached these to the outside of the carriage with toothpicks. You can also add a smaller slice of fruit such as a grape for the hubcaps and secure a toothpick. Cut off the excess length with scissors. When completely happy with the design, add the watermelon and other fruit to the inside of the baby carriage.
Carefully place on serving tray and set out on food table. What centerpiece will you be using at your baby shower? I spent about 2 hours the day before the baby shower cutting and transforming the watermelon into a carriage. An hour before the shower started, I added the finishing touches and filled the inside with the different fruits.
