A Mid Engine Coupe For VW?

Here in the US, Volkswagen's image has certainly dropped over the past two decades. However, all of that may soon change as the German automaker lays plans for a new US factory and overhauls its line up to bring newer, more exciting cars stateside. Included in that mix is a mid engine coupe and related roadster, cars that could burnish Volkswagen's lagging image. Yes, you heard that right -- a mid-engined VW. According to AutoWeek and others who have been following this news, a concept car could be ready in time for November's L.A. A pair of four cylinders will power the car. VW's small 1.4L twinturbocharger has been mentioned as has its 1.6L TDI diesel, both working with a seven-speed, double shift gearbox. The body style will be reminiscient of the Lotus Elise, with a curb weight slightly above one ton. This will allow the car to achieve segment leading fuel economy and acceleration numbers. Volkswagen is raiding its own parts bin to hold down costs and is looking at Audi with help building the aluminum spaceframe. Majority VW owner Porsche is interested in the project and could use the new platform for its own purposes, possibly resurrecting the venerable 914 model. As is common practice, automakers love to leak a certain amount of information about special projects in order to generate publicity which they hope will spread like a virus across the internet. Thus, the recent rumblings could be just that or VW may have something new up its sleeve. We've seen VW stumble before -- the Phaeton luxury sedan is a prime example -- so don't hold your breath regarding the mid-size roadster/coupe.

This serves to prevent wheel spinning arising due to insufficient grip, with the torque being redirected to the other wheel. Model-specific suspension technology for a superior drive. The model-specific suspension of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i has been painstakingly tuned to extract maximum potential from the outstanding drive design based on the know-how of BMW M GmbH. The new BMW X5 M50i is equipped with Adaptive M suspension. One of two sets of characteristics can be selected for the electronically controlled dampers, which can be activated using the driving experience switches, comprising COMFORT and SPORT modes. The new BMW X7 M50i is fitted with adaptive dual axle air suspension, which is also available optionally for the new BMW X5 M50i. In the SPORT driving mode, as well as at speeds of over 138 km/h, this automatically results in a reduced ride height of 20 millimetres. Optional integral active steering is available for both models, which serves to further enhance the vehicle’s agility. It also results in enhanced superiority when it comes to lane changing and manoeuvrability in urban traffic, by co-steering the rear wheels either in the same or in the opposite direction, depending on the driving speed. Design and equipment: exclusive appearance with a luxurious atmosphere. Model-specific designer features serve to emphasise the exclusive and sporty nature of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i the moment you see it. The extra-large air inlets in the front apron are a clear indication of the V8 engine’s cooling requirements. The unique design of the side sills and rear apron, the BMW individual high-gloss Shadow Line, and selected design elements in Cerium Grey similarly serve to underline the outstanding status of the 8-cylinder models.

Higher spec models gain bigger alloys and more luxuries, while the top-spec 201bhp Ceed GT is the hottest performance model available, for now. Sharing a platform with the Hyundai i30, the new Ceed gets a good range of engines, with three petrols to choose from with various outputs and a torquey 1.6-litre diesel. Ride and handling still aren’t quite on par with the Golf and the Focus, but they’re a great step up from the old model. Like in the Ford Focus, the infotainment screen looks rather cumbersome, just stuck on top of the dash. The system is easy to use, though not quite as crisp as a VW Group unit. All models get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard and unlike many other manufacturers, Kia has kept the core controls for climate control and volume as easy-to-reach buttons. The rest of the interior feels high-quality while boot space is up there with the Skoda Octavia. If you need even more space, Kia also offers the Sportswagon estate version and the rakish ProCeed shooting brake.

The Vauxhall Astra has long been a high-performing regular fixture at the top of car sales charts, but it hasn't always had the substance to back up its popularity. That's all changed now, as the latest model has undergone a thorough overhaul and has consequently risen up the family hatchback ranks with its great blend of style, space, low running costs and kit list. Looks have always been on the Astra's side, and the current car is no different. With sharp lines, distinctive lights and an athletic stance, the Astra certainly looks the part. It's the same story on the inside, too. There's plenty of high-quality plastics and leather trim on the steering wheel and gearlever, plus an attractive dash design, incorporating a large touchscreen. There's plenty of room in the Astra and it's easy to get comfortable, while the boot is a decent size making it ideal for use as a family car. On the road, the Astra drives superbly, with a composed and compliant ride and good steering feedback. The engine range is comprehensive, and Vauxhall's latest raft of efficient diesel engines are impressive.
