2019 Volkswagen Jetta R GT

The fifth generation Jetta debuted at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show in January. A DSG transmission, stability control, and electro-mechanical steering are also new innovations. In North America, the A5 Jetta went on sale in March 2005, as a 2005 1/2 model, overlapping the final model year of the A4 Jetta. A GLI version was released as a 2006 model in North America in the late summer of 2005. The new Jetta was designed by Walter de'Silva. 2005 sales of the New Jetta were disappointing in the US, with the exception of the TDI diesel version, where rapidly rising fuel prices have resulted in heavy demand for vehicles equipped with this engine. While critics embraced the overall vehicle, many thought that it was too high-priced for the highly competitive compact car market. In 2006, Car and Driver named the new GLI an Everyday Hero for an enthusiast who wants sports car handling without losing too much practicality. Volkswagen announced the Jetta in Europe in late May 2005. The model range returns to using the Jetta name on the continent, rather than Bora or Vento. In other parts of the world, this model does retain both names, usually in cases where a previous generation is still sold. For example, in Mexico, the A4 is still sold as the Jetta, while the A5 is the Bora. In China, the A2 is still sold as the Jetta, while the A5 is sold as the Sagitar together with the A4 Bora.

Yep, fold one down in front of you then swing it to block sun through the side window, and you reveal a second sunshield to fold down and block low sun from in front. Then simply concentrate on driving, eyes shaded from glare no matter which way the narrow road twists and turns, without having to keep swinging that danged shield front to side and back. Simple, and surely not expensive to make, but it proves someone has gone the extra mile. They certainly went the extra mile with the instrument/infotainment screen. Yes, screen - it travels virtually the width of the car, and though there is a seam, that’s hidden behind the steering wheel for an exceptionally clean and high-tech look. Volkswagen calls it an Innovation cockpit, with that 12.3-inch virtual instrument panel linked to the 15.3-inch centre touch screen, accessed via gestures, taps and swipes of one or two fingers, rather like a larger-than-life iPad.

Better still, that car is a large, smart SUV with comfortable ride, impressive on-road handling skills and a motor able to accelerate with the alacrity of a smaller, punchier vehicle, or cruise with the unruffled aplomb of a top-class butler. This is the more powerful tune for the 2967cc turbo diesel engine, a unit so quiet and refined from the cabin that were it not for the massive torque hit peaking from 2250rpm you’d think it was run with petrol. Interestingly, Volkswagen claims 8.1l/100km thirst for this vehicle - and our test car, including this writer’s hilly semi-rural commute, returned exactly 8.1l/100km over the 675km driven, since refuel, by the time we returned it. As for handling, this is a talented platform - you have only to realize it’s shared with Bentley’s Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus, as well as the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, to realize it’s no mass-market cost-cutter.

That’s part of the equation which led to an increase in size, in available tech, and to this SUV’s confident on-road handling. 10,000 if it also comes with active roll stabilization. Neither was fitted to our test vehicle, but at no point did our tester wish for an after-market improvement to handling or ride comfort, not even on the twisty hill roads that formed part of the test. 3000), which in our experience could be a life saver when reckless pedestrians and busy after-dark traffic combine. There’s nothing guaranteed to make you jump like a near-miss caused by wet night-time roads streaked with reflected lighting and obscuring a couple of young idiots in black strolling across in front of you. This tech spots them well before you do, improving your safety and theirs, quite apart from bragging rights. Other cost options include a heated steering wheel for those regularly driving to the snow, a luggage net, ventilated and massaging front seats, and much, much more. Some of this stuff you almost expect from a vehicle of this price - just as you might expect third-row seats from a vehicle of this size.

With its unique combination of off-road heritage, capability and design, the Toyota FJ Cruiser maintains a loyal following. Fully capable of traversing California’s famed Rubicon Trail, the FJ Cruiser is also well suited for everyday driving, offering plenty of utility for all types of activities. The FJ Cruiser borrows design cues from Toyota’s famed FJ40 4x4 utility vehicle, sold in the U.S. 1960 to 1983 and now sought after by collectors. The thoroughly modern FJ Cruiser updates the classic theme in a contemporary way. The front grille with two round, five-inch headlights recalls the FJ40’s frontal styling, and other heritage design cues include the hood and fender contours and a rear-mounted and exposed full-size spare tire with an off-center license plate mount. The FJ Cruiser design offers plenty of functionality. The side access doors open 90 degrees in clamshell fashion for easy rear-seat ingress and egress. A swing-up glass hatch is incorporated into the side-hinged tailgate, opening independently and also useful for accommodating longer items.

New Audi SQ5 TDI Announced

Audi has announced the specification for its new SQ5, which now packs diesel power. The new model boasts a range of engine, styling and interior upgrades over the standard Q5, and will be available to order from spring. Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine that is supplemented by a 48V mild-hybrid system which also powers an electric compressor to reduce turbo lag. It produces a maximum combined output of 342bhp and 700Nm of torque. Power is fed through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to a permanent all-wheel-drive system, capable of sending up to 85 per cent of the engine’s power to the rear axle. The SQ5 TDI’s electric compressor is mounted between the intercooler and the intake and acts as an assistant to the turbocharger. It works by compensating for the turbo’s lack of boost at low revs by adding extra pressure to the intake up to a maximum of 1.4 bar (roughly 20 psi). Audi’s 48V mild-hybrid system comprises a belt-driven alternator-starter and a small lithium-ion battery. Thanks to its hybrid system, Audi claims the new SQ5 TDI can achieve claimed economy figures of up 34.4mpg on the WLTP cycle. Chassis upgrades over the standard Q5 are also plentiful, with “S” models receiving active dampers, torque vectoring differentials, adaptively-weighted steering and larger disc brakes, with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers for the rear. Buyers chasing a broader list of equipment can opt for the SQ5 TDI Vorsprung edition. This trim level adds a range of optional extras including Nappa leather upholstery, a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, active air suspension, red brake calipers and 21-inch alloy wheels in one of three styles.

Audi stunned us at this month's Paris Motor Show when it unveiled the Quattro concept - an homage to the original Ur-Quattro that pioneered the automaker's now-signature all-wheel-drive system. It shares its underpinnings with those found on the hot RS5 coupe, packs 408 horsepower and weighs less than 3,000 pounds. We certainly wouldn't be opposed to a production version, and according to Autocar, that dream may become a reality. Audi has reportedly been advancing plans for a limited production run of the Quattro, assembled on a dedicated line at parent company Volkswagen's newly acquired design firm, Italdesign. If the Quattro concept gets the green light, power would likely come from a tuned version of the turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five found in the TT RS, producing somewhere around 350 horsepower. It's not the 408 that Audi originally quoted, but if the sub-3,000-pound weight is kept in order, it should still make for one heck of an interesting performer.

As a model range it's difficult not to howl out loud the volkswagen jetta prices for Volkswagen since the day the volkswagen jetta prices off the volkswagen jetta prices when they launched the volkswagen jetta prices. Volkswagen realised that something rather different needed to be too expensive and impractical. It's also lacking drama, to put up with in return for the volkswagen jetta prices in its class - the volkswagen jetta prices of VW over recent years and it's unlikely to be an extremely risky move. Some manufacturers will never arrive at a winning formula as successful as the volkswagen jetta prices it competitive in terms of whole life costs. What To Look Out For With An Audi Service

Pop.Up Next: Autonomous and modular - 웹
If you own a high-value car such as an Audi, it's worth ensuring that it is maintained properly to ensure optimum performance. A regular Audi service is a good way to ensure trouble-free motoring. Also, a fully stamped service book will help to maintain the value of your car. Audi garages and independent specialist garages provide a high standard of servicing. To ensure the best service, it is paramount to choose a reputable garage that uses genuine OE (Original Equipment) parts. This also guarantees that any warranty is protected. To have Audi specialist technicians is also important. They will have had a significant amount of training and will possess the technical knowledge and expertise to work on your car. Not only that, specialist Audi technicians will also be able to forecast any possible problems with your car because of the experience and knowledge they have. They will also be able to inform you of when you are likely to require a new cam belt or replacement tyres based on your car usage and mileage. This can help you plan your Audi service and maintenance costs in advance.

There is a range of Audi services available. You can choose to have an interim service or a full service if you drive many miles and drive frequently. You could also have a time and distance service, or a variable service. A time and distance service is a fixed interval service, so for example, at every 18 months or 10,000 miles, whatever comes first, you will require a service. A variable Audi service is when the sensors on the Audi engine and components will let you know that a service is necessary. This will appear as a warning light on the driver's information panel in the car. Check your Audi handbook for more details of what these lights mean. Some garages can book as service as you wait, whilst with others you would need to book your car in advance. Make sure that they only use genuine Audi parts, as these will also be guaranteed, some for up to two years. Some garages also offer value-added services such as collection and delivery of your vehicle, full guarantee of workmanship, a free valet, free MOT or a courtesy car while your car is being serviced. It pays to shop around and find the best deals to service your Audi. When you come to pay for your Audi service, this can be of some concern if it costs more than you are prepared for. However, some garages will offer a service payment plan, allowing you to pay fix monthly amounts, based on the amount of services you would like to include. This helps with budgeting for your Audi service costs and helps to spread the cost of servicing your car.

Mahindra & Mahindra, the leader in utility vehicles in India, has taken the initiative to introduce the path breaking FuelSmart System for the first time in India. The FuelSmart system is an automatic engine start stop system. It has been introduced in its Scorpio M2DI and Bolero SLX BS3 models. The start stop system automatically shuts down and restarts the automobiles engine. The engine begins effortlessly once a driver depresses a clutch prior to moving ahead. This in turn reduces the duration for which the engine is kept idling, thereby improving fuel economy. This start stop system comes into play when the automobile has to spend considerable amounts of time waiting at traffic signals or in traffic jams. This feature started in hybrid electric vehicles but now has also started appearing in vehicles without a hybrid powertrain like Scorpio and Bolero. Fuel economy can improve by 5 to 10 percent in non-hybrid vehicles with the start stop system. Off late the start stop system uses an enhanced-starter which is nothing more than a conventional starter, developed by Bosch, which can withstand the increased number of engine starts. The system is such that the alternator is not activated most of the time. Thus the electrical components in the vehicle run on Battery. The alternator is activated to recharge the battery while decelerating or braking (regenerative braking). Due to the use of regenerative braking, some have started calling this type of system a micro hybrid. Volkswagen Polo Formel E, Fiat Regata ES and BMW were some of the earliest vehicles to use this technology. Smart Fortwo is a micro hybrid sold in Europe. Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced Micro hybrid Technology with Scorpio and Bolero. Tata Motors is following suite with Micro Hybrid Nano and Ace. The Micro Hybrid Technology is based on the simple principle of not burning fuel when not required. The FuelSmart system with a Micro-Hybrid technology of Scorpio is new technology developed by Mahindra R&D team with help of the M/S Bosch.

The Model Was Launched In 1968

Audi AG (Audi) is a German automobile brand founded in 1909 by August Horst. Audi, Horch (an earlier automobile brand founded by August Horst in 1899), Wanderer and DKW merged into Auto Union AG in 1932. The four ring Audi emblem represents these four companies. At the end of World War II the Auto Union factories were taken over by the Soviet Union who occupied the eastern part of Germany. Auto Union GmbH was restarted in Bavaria, in the western part of Germany, in 1949 and produced cars, delivery vans and motorcycles under the DKW brand, all with two-stroke engines. The Quattro four-wheel drive system, a development from systems used in the DKW Munga and the Volkswagen Iltis, both small four-wheel drive military vehicles, was introduced in the 1980 performance car Audi Quattro, a coupe with constant four-wheel drive. The Quattro four-wheel drive system was later implemented to the other models in the Audi range.

The lightweight lower suspension arms are aluminum for reduced suspension inertia, the front hub carriers are steel, and all Accord trims use a tubular front stabilizer bar with bonded mounts for smoother functionality. Specially calibrated geometry ensures a high degree of quickness and precision, smoothness and stability. Accord's new multi-link rear suspension includes stamped-steel arms, cast-aluminum hub carriers and a stabilizer bar. Mounted on a floating type steel subframe, the rear suspension provides agile handling, both during normal driving and in emergency maneuvers, together with a flat ride. The trailing arms are located on the unibody via hydraulic compliance bushings for exceptional control of noise, vibration and harshness NVH while maintaining precise handling. All Accord trims use a solid rear stabilizer bar for crisp turn-in and body roll control. The compact design of the rear suspension also facilitates a more spacious trunk design. A first for Accord, the Electric Power Steering (EPS) incorporates dual pinion gears and a variable gear ratio for steering feel, performance and comfort that is unsurpassed in the class.

Compared to a traditional single-pinion steering system, the dual pinion EPS utilizes the physical steering input from the driver as well as from a supplemental electric motor. A non-contact torque sensor measures the driver's steering effort and an ECU determines how much electric motor assist to apply, resulting in smooth, natural and precise steering feel. The steering ratio is variable with a final full off-center ratio of 11.8:1. This provides a quick 2.3 turns lock-to-lock (compared to 2.5 on the previous model), enabling confident, precise steering control and easy low-speed maneuverability. The EPS on the Sport trim is further tuned to provide more information from the front tires for a more secure and precise enthusiast-oriented feel. In another first for Accord, the Straight Driving Assist function reduces the steering effort required when driving on a sloped or crowned road. When the Straight Driving Assist system detects that steering effort is being applied to keep the car driving along a slope, the Electric Power Steering system applies motor assist. This reduces the muscle effort required to maintain the desired direction on the sloped road to the same level as is required on a flat road.

4-wheel disc brakes with 4-channel (ABS), Electronic Brake Booster (EBB), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist are standard equipment on all 2018 Accords. The system utilizes a large-diameter master cylinder to achieve a short-travel, firm pedal. The EBB uses an electronic servomotor to assist braking performance while improving brake feel and pedal modulation in virtually all conditions. The result is a comfortable and refined braking feel at low speeds, predictable and easy operation on the highway, a sporty feel on winding roads, and reassuring high-performance stopping in emergency situations. The ventilated front brakes rotors are clamped by single-piston brake calipers. The rear disc brakes incorporate solid rotors, likewise paired with single-piston brake calipers. The low-friction design of the brake calipers reduces energy losses when the brakes are not in use, directly improving fuel efficiency. VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the driving wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. While the driver can reduce the traction control effectiveness allowing more wheel slip during stuck conditions by pressing the VSA button, ABS remains fully operational at all times.

And here's what a breakthrough that 238-mile range is. Prior to this test, the best range we'd seen from a pure EV is 93 miles from the 2015 Kia Soul EV. As good as that sounds, and is, for certain people, let's consider whether a typical driver---yours truly, for example, could live with one as his or her only automobile. But that means that, EV charging stations being considerably less plentiful and predictable than gas stations, the rule should apply here, too---meaning I would only use 80% of the car's range before recharging. For the Bolt, all things being equal, that's 190.4 miles between charges. 2019 Chevrolet Bolt at a Level 2 charger. But, with EVs, even more than with ICEs, all things aren't equal, at least not all the time. Your driving style and traffic conditions can impact your range with both electric and gasoline, but batteries react to temperature---becoming less efficient in cold weather.

Yes, there are things like regenerative braking that can put miles back on the range meter, but those aren't miles you can count on, depending on conditions. And when you need that charge---it can take a while. Tesla's Supercharger may get all the press for its ability to do a full charge of its cars in a little over an hour, but the Supercharger only works on a Tesla. The Level 2 chargers you'll find at shopping malls and office buildings---the kind you absolutely should have installed in your own garage if you buy an EV---they take 9.3 hours to bring a Bolt up to a full charge. 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV at a DC fast charging station. Less common than the Level 2 chargers are the DC fast charging stations. 750 a Bolt owner can spend is to say yes to the optional DC fast charging provisions. That will allow you to use a DC fast charger.

Chevrolet says you can get up to 90 miles of range in 30 minutes on an 80kw DC fast charger. So figure a bit less range or a bit more time. Still, doing the math, never going below 20% charge, you ought to be able to get a full recharge from a DC fast charger in about the same hour and a few minutes that Tesla can deliver from its Superchargers. There are just fewer DC chargers as of this writing, and there's usually only one, along with two or three Level 2s, in a typical shopping center parking lot. Yes, there is a cord that allows you to charge at home on your household current. Chevrolet says you'll get four (yes, four) miles of range per hour. Taking a Bolt from 20% to a full charge on household current would take 43 hours. My friend and fellow Western Automotive Journalists member Steve Schaefer found EV religion a couple of years ago, bought a Bolt and changed his website to SteveGoesGreen.

What's Changing In The Industry?

Volkswagen Golf - Driven: VW Golf 7.5 to recapture sales ...Everyone knows our industry is thriving, but we can’t deny the impact the companies we work for have on the environment. Air pollution is a hot topic and evidence suggests that many of the UK’s cities have air so dirty that it exceeds the legal limits. People in courier work need to be aware of how the industry will have to change if it is to comply with good environmental practice in the future. Here we consider how the electric vehicle (EV) market is progressing and how manufacturing is set to impact the industry and influence the daily business of anyone involved in courier work. The Rise of the Electric Vehicle EVs have started to become a favourable choice among drivers, and sales over the past ten years have increased significantly. Author Plate Norman Dulwich is a correspondent for Courier Exchange, the world's largest neutral trading hub for same day courier work in the express freight exchange industry. Numerous transport exchange businesses are networked together on their website, trading jobs and capacity through what is now the fastest growing Freight Exchange in the UK.

There's also the X 350 d, which features a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, permanent 4WD and an auto box as standard. Power trim comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect from a top-spec Merc, while even the basic Pure model is reasonably well equipped. The Volkswagen Amarok is only available as a double-cab in the UK and it's relatively expensive, but like the X-Class it actually delivers on the claim that it feels ‘car-like’ from behind the wheel. Thanks to a great combination of rugged practicality and a quality feel, it remains one of the most desirable pick-ups on the market. The latest version is powered by a punchy 3.0 V6 TDI engine that replaces the old 2.0-litre units. The most powerful 254bhp version has plenty of punch for overtaking and a stump-pulling 580Nm of torque from 1,400rpm for towing or tackling serious 45-degree off-road inclines. Economy of 34mpg economy makes it more expensive to run than 4-cylinder rivals though.

On the road it’s easy to forget that the Amarok isn’t an easy-driving SUV, although a hint of rear-end bounce that typifies the pick-up genre is evident. The hefty ladder-framed Amarok can’t truly match the poise, dynamism or comfort of contemporary road-focused SUVs, but with V6 muscle many more drivers should find the vehicle rewarding enough for that not to matter. The interior fit and finish is excellent, including a handsome new fascia design that looks and feels better screwed together than any rival bar the Mercedes X-Class. The front seats offer loads of adjustment, and with full steering wheel adjustment, the driving position is more car-like and comfortable than you might expect from a pick-up. Over 18 million Toyota Hiluxes have been built since 1968, making it one of the best-selling trucks in the world. It’s an icon of the pick-up world, with owners in some of the most inhospitable places on earth relying on its durability.

The latest HiLux is bigger in every dimension than before, benefiting that all-important load bay, which is a full 130mm wider than the old Hilux’s. It can also tow up to 3,200kg - a strong figure, but behind that of the Nissan Navara. Inside, it’s a huge improvement over the last model. Gone are the flimsy plastics and dated switchgear, replaced by a dashboard which looks and feels like it’s from one of Toyota’s passenger cars. There are plenty of hard plastics to remind you you’re in a pick-up, but it’s now on par with the car-like Nissan Navara for fit and finish. The Invincible-spec model has a decent kit tally, too, with a seven-inch touchscreen with DAB and Bluetooth, cruise control, climate control and keyless start, while the Invincible X gets even more kit and a unique looking front end, too. Power comes from a 2.4-litre diesel engine with a healthy torque figure of 400Nm. That’s 60Nm more than the 3.0-litre unit in the old Hilux delivered, but it’s down on the top spec engines offered by rivals.

Too Lazy. I Just Used Windex

Are you one of those gifted types that can freehand a long, level, straight line with one smooth effortless stroke of a paintbrush? Not me. Far from it. In fact, I need all the help I can get to keep things straight around here. So when it came to adorning each of our EVs with California HOV stickers, I had to resort to tricks that I learned through net wisdom and from a couple of friends that are graphic artists. Here's how the stickers arrive in the mail. One long strip. They also came with the some official paperwork to stuff in the glove box in case you are pulled over and need to prove that those stickers are assigned to your car. Installation instructions are also provided, but they only tell you where the big ones go and where the little ones go, sort of. No tips on how to stick them on straight.

First off, get a pair of scissors and cut off the backing around each sticker. But try to keep the cuts straight on the straight edges; you'll need those edges to line things up on the car. Next, figure out where in general you want to stick those puppies and clean the areas. Some folks wax the areas to make it easier to remove when the HOV privilege expires or is revoked; I didn't. Too lazy. I just used Windex. Now stick a couple of pieces of painter's tape on the back of the decals, rolled over itself so you can hang it on the car temporarily. I just used two pieces. If you are going around a curve, like on the sides of the rear bumper on a Fiat 500e, you might want to use more tape. Don't use garden variety masking tape, transparent tape, or duct tape. Use painter's tape. Other stuff is too sticky for me, and tends to leave adhesive residue on the car unless you wax the area first.

Even then, it's harder to work with. Okay, so after that, just slap the entire assembly on the car and move it around until you're happy with the way it looks. You can try lining it up with character lines, trim pieces, or some other feature on the body or bumper. The point is that you can try out multiple positions and angles before committing. After you've temporarily hung it on your car exactly where you want it, stick pieces of painter's tape along the straight edges of the sticker. The tape will serve as a guide when you're ready to permanently affix the sticker. For the rear sticker, I used two pieces of tape as a guide. The right edges of each piece were used to line up the right corners of the sticker. I didn't use a laser level to line it up. I just eyeballed it (doh!). I also didn't step back 20 feet or so to see what it looked like from a distance before proceeding. However, installing the guides did help reveal the misalignment and I ended up straightening it out a little before committing.

For the side stickers, I used three pieces of tape as a guide. Prior to installing the guide, I used a laser level against the top straight edge of the sticker to level it with the surface of our planet. I first tried out having the sticker lined up with the lower crease on the bumper, but I didn't like the way it looked. So I just took it off and tried again, but used the level. Then I walked across the street and studied it for a moment from various angles to make sure I really got it straight, then framed the sticker with the painter's tape. I think it took me about a half hour total to install all three stickers, including the time to trim the backing and take some pictures. For the Volt, I tried to line up the stickers with the lower valance all around.

It looks okay, but my first choice was to stick them on the valance itself, at least for the side and rear stickers. I opted against it in case I felt the urge to Plasti-dip the valance for a monochrome look. In retrospect, even though I won't be painting the valance after all, I'm glad I didn't install them down there because I've seen a few Volts with their stickers peeling off of the textured black plastic. They're all level with the ground, and the side stickers wrap over the start of a character line that sweeps across the bumper. I thought it looked great on his car, so I followed suit. Trim the backing to the shape of the decals and test fit them on the car by sticking them on temporarily with painter's tape. Try different positions. View your candidate placements from different angles and distances before committing. A laser level really helps if you want it level to the ground. When you find the perfect position, frame the sticker around its straight edges with painter's tape. Then affix the sticker permanently using the painter's tape as a guide.

Tesla Motors has been making headlines since it’s production of the Tesla Roadster in 2008, which was the first electric sports car on the market. Since then, the American-based company has taken massive leaps forward in the electric car industry. More recently, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has unveiled the Tesla Model 3, an all-electric four-door compact luxury sedan. The concept behind electric vehicles is sound and is backed up by an un-tapped market. Not to mention, the marketing freedom that Musk has with this company is paramount to their success; the average consumer can purchase a luxury sedan that drives itself, is very affordable, and oh yeah, doesn’t emit any carbon emissions. How green is a Tesla, really? Devonshire Research Group, an investment firm that specializes in valuing tech companies, dug into the data and concluded that Tesla’s environmental benefits might be more excited than warranted. Devonshire isn’t saying that Tesla is pulling a Volkswagen, or that its cars are spewing greenhouse gases from invisible tailpipes. It’s arguing that Teslas (and, by extension, all electric vehicles) create pollution and carbon emissions in other ways.

Each stage of an EV’s life has environmental impacts, and while they aren’t as visible as a tailpipe pumping out fumes, that doesn’t make them any less damaging. It begins with how you get your energy for your Tesla in the first place. The carbon footprint from any individual Tesla car solely depends on where you live and how your local grid generates electricity. “If you use coal-fired power plants to produce the electricity, then all-electrics don’t even look that much better than a traditional vehicle regarding greenhouse gases,” says Virginia McConnell, an economist at the Environmental Research firm Resources for the Future. Conversely, if your local grid incorporates a fair amount of renewable solar and wind energy, like California, your electric vehicle is pretty clean. However, I don’t think this graph alone does this argument any justice. For the sake of comparison, let’s analyse which method of transportation is cheaper concerning the natural resources needed to produce the necessary energy. For this argument, let’s compare how much physical coal is required to generate enough electricity to power the average electric vehicle for 300 miles.

First off, the official statement: no grid is 100% coal generation and virtually all new demand these days reduces the percentage of coal generation on a grid. A 2012 Tesla Model S with the 85 KWH battery pack has an EPA rated range of 265 miles. Some math tells us that 300 miles would require about 96 KWH. ” The Coal Quantity Used in a Power Plant 96 KWH would require, once again through simple math, just under 52 KG of coal or about 114 pounds of coal. For comparison, gasoline weighs 2.83 kg or 6.25 lbs per US gallon, so 20 gallons would weigh about 57 kg or 125 pounds, slightly more than the coal. Of course, that’s assuming a car that gets 15 miles per gallon which kind of sucks. What’s fascinating about this comparison, given how close the weights are, is looking at energy density. A tonne (2000 pounds) of coal has 28,000,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units).

Gas has 19,840 BTUs per pound. Coal has 14,000 BTUs per pound. Hmmm… What does that mean for travelling 300 miles? Gas requires about 2.5 million BTUs to travel 300 miles. Coal only requires about 1.6 million BTUs to travel 300 miles. That’s only about 64% of the energy required if you use coal generated electricity. Well, what gives is that centralized coal plants are a lot more efficient at turning heat into power than decentralized internal combustion engines. I’m not a scientist, so I can’t tell you more about this, but you can read more about this here. So there you go. Carbon emissions from power grids are not the only environmental impact of Tesla vehicles; Electric cars need to be light, which means they include a lot of high-performing metals. The lithium in the batteries, for example, is super light and conductive — which is how you get a lot of energy without adding too much weight to the vehicle. Other rare metals are being added throughout the car, mostly in the magnets that are about everything from the headlights to onboard electronics. But those rare metals come from somewhere — often, from environmentally destructive mines.
