The new Volkswagen T-Roc has been designed to appeal to a wide-ranging and far-reaching audience. It鈥檚 a car that mixes the style of a sports car with the practicality of an SUV - mated to all the latest technology and fuel-efficient engines. Speaking from Volkswagen鈥檚 Frankfurt Motor Show stand, Marco Pavone, head of exterior design at the company, talked through his favourite features and explained how the brand has become an expert in mixing form with function. Q: How does it feel to see the all-new Volkswagen T-Roc on the stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show? A: It鈥檚 amazing to see the whole thing here. I鈥檓 really proud. We鈥檝e been working with this car for the last three or four years and it鈥檚 a great achievement to see the product on the stage now. Q: What was your inspiration behind the new Volkswagen T-Roc? A: We wanted to do something really 鈥榣ifestyle鈥?

But not just like a toy; it has to be something really masculine. It鈥檚 a core product for Volkswagen, so it has to still look serious and solid. But it should be a car that is usable for all kinds of people. Q: So what kind of things did you have as inspiration on the drawing board when you started the project? A: We had some cool cars, some nice SUVs and some sports cars. But we always had in mind that this car needed to be young and dynamic. And I think we鈥檝e achieved everything we had planned for it. Q: Who did you have in mind when you were designing this car? A: We do cars for young people, for old people, for everybody; and that鈥檚 what we had in mind. We never do a car for one niche of people. And although the car has a young appeal, I think everyone can get in and out the car very easily - it is quite practical, it is quite functional. But it still has this young approach, and that鈥檚 a good thing.

Q: This was a concept car only three years ago, so what did you take from the reaction back then into the car we see today? A: I think we have kept the whole essence and flow of that concept car. The proportions were amazing - huge wheels, a really fast design with a compact cabin. Lots of sculpted panels and body styling - and we tried to translate this for the production car. Q: The T-Roc is very stylish yet very practical, and it comes loaded with technology, too. How did you manage to achieve all of those things? A: At Volkswagen we are experts at that. We know how to mix emotion and function at a really nice level. If you look at the headlights, you have good technology and loads of functionality - but despite this we have reduced the height of them to create a really nice figure at the front. It has lots of impact. Q: What are your favourite details on the new T-Roc?

And Randy Halcomb, who is marketing guru, thank you for coming on board. Clinton, I know you hooked up with Scott, and it was just a few days ago, and you went for a test drive. And tell us about it. Clinton Quan: I test drove the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. The Jetta is Volkswagen鈥檚 compact sedan. The GLI is the sport version of the Jetta. And there are six trims in the Jetta family and three engines. 21,000, and all three of those trims feature a 1.4-liter inline 4 turbocharge engine producing 150 horsepower, 184 pound-feet of torque. 26,000. Those two trims feature a 1.8-liter inline 4 turbocharge engine producing 170 horsepower. It鈥檚 also rated at 184 pound-feet of torque. And then you move up to the top of the line trim which is the Jetta GLI, the one I drove, and that features a 2.0-liter engine turbocharge inline 4 and that produces 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.

Tom Smith: Okay. Outstanding. Tom Smith: Okay. Another outstanding feat of granular recollection of detail. Folks, Clinton and I are just sitting here talking. I, of course, have my pen in hand, notepad in front of me. Clinton is just going off the top of his head with these details of the vehicles, so that鈥檚 why we call him 鈥渢he Professor.鈥?Thank you much for all those details, as always. You drove the GLI, the sporty version. And to clarify, not long from now, the 2019 is going to be coming out, the 2019 Jetta. Clinton Quan: Yes. So I鈥檓 pretty sure they鈥檒l have a GLI trim. But it hasn鈥檛 been announced yet, so it鈥檒l probably come the following year in 2019 as a 2020 model. Tom Smith: Got it. Okay. So let鈥檚 talk about the drive. Clinton Quan: I drove out to Idyllwild. So it was a really nice drive up to the mountain community of Idyllwild.

Clinton Quan: Yeah, it was a great drive up in the mountains, really got to test the vehicle in terms of acceleration, braking, and handling. And this is a really fun car to drive. It鈥檚 got plenty of power, especially with that 270 pound-feet of torque and 210 horsepower. Tom Smith: Okay. So you drove everything, highways, byways, right? Clinton Quan: Yes. Yeah, it has a six speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Tom Smith: Paddle shifters, your favorite, right? Clinton Quan: Yes. Yes. It鈥檚 the only transmission. Tom Smith: Okay, cool. So let鈥檚 talk a little bit about the styling, the outside. Take us around the car. Clinton Quan: Well, I think this is one of the most attractive compact sedans on the market. It鈥檚 got really, really clean lines. It鈥檚 very well-proportioned. It looks great, I think, from every angle whether it鈥檚 the front, the rear, the side, three quarter front, three quarter rear.

Overall length about 182 inches in length. So that鈥檚 a little bit larger than some of the other compact sedans. There鈥檚 really a good amount of space on the inside as well in terms of the interior design. That鈥檚 one of the things I like most about this car. It鈥檚 got the three-spoke on a flat-bottom steering wheel with the paddle shifters, as I mentioned previously, large, circular gauges, tachometer, speedometer. It actually reminds me of the Audi TT I used to have. Tom Smith: Well, it鈥檚 in that family, right? Clinton Quan: Volkswagen, Audi. Tom Smith: That鈥檚 obvious, but not obvious for everybody, so yeah. The Volkswagen, Audi is siblings, right? Clinton Quan: Yes. So with the Jetta GLI you get the red/black combination trim. It also has that nice red stitching on the leather steering wheel, red stitching on the seats. Tom Smith: And I love the red accents; those are always very clean, very sharp looking. Clinton Quan: Yeah. It also has the nice 18-inch alloy wheels.
