Drivers use the steering wheel controls to modify the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit display. Other switchgear is logically arranged, and the automaker wisely retains a traditional power/volume knob and a tuning knob for the stereo, giving VW鈥檚 infotainment system an instant advantage over others that don鈥檛. Additionally, the climate controls are well-marked and intuitive to use. Dear Volkswagen: Please make the Jetta鈥檚 trunk lid hinge detents more secure. Perhaps I鈥檓 a slow learner, but my week with the Jetta was marred by what I assume to be a glitch with the trunk lid hinges. You pop open the trunk and lift the lid, like you would on every other sedan on the planet. Once open, you would assume that it would remain that way. But no鈥?Unless you make sure it is all the way open, it slowly shuts itself, the lid gaining speed as it comes down, leaving the poor sap who is loading the trunk partially engulfed or bonked on the head. This happened to both my husband and me on several occasions. At least the trunk itself, measuring 14.1 cubic feet, is nice and roomy. That鈥檚 less space than the previous Jetta, which boasted an impressive 15.7 cu.-ft.
The interior is accommodating, too. The new Jetta鈥檚 top-end infotainment system offers plenty of features. The 2019 Jetta鈥檚 infotainment system is attractive, with modern, crisp graphics that fill the 8-inch display and a slick proximity-sensing feature that brings up additional screen controls when your hand approaches the display. I didn鈥檛 find the system鈥檚 voice controls particularly helpful, as the technology often misinterpreted my requests or seemingly did not offer pathways to success, like finding nearby points of interest. Thankfully, the Apple CarPlay smartphone projection system allowed me to readily and rapidly access information on my sweet, accommodating and understanding iPhone. Android Auto is also aboard, along with Mirror Link, whatever that is. Volkswagen offers a free 6-month trial of its Car-Net Security and Service package, which includes automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and a vehicle locator if you鈥檝e forgotten where you parked the Jetta, among others. It also supplies Family Guardian functions that give parents an alert when their teen driver speeds, breaks curfew, or exceeds specific geographic boundaries.
Shelly鈥檚 parents would have freaked. You can carry your kids in the Jetta and enjoy peace of mind, thanks to the car鈥檚 comprehensive list of active safety features. At least they might have relaxed a little thanks to the Jetta鈥檚 full array of standard and available active safety systems. Better yet, the most important stuff is even offered for the base trim level in an option package. While driving the car, these safety systems impressed me with both their accuracy and smoothness. In most situations, you鈥檙e barely aware that they鈥檙e there, working to keep you and your loved ones safe. No doubt, that extends to the new Jetta鈥檚 underlying vehicle architecture. However, at the time of this writing, neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the federal government had crash tested this brand-new vehicle, which is why we haven鈥檛 rated it for overall safety. Unexpectedly, the Jetta鈥檚 turbocharged 1.4-liter proved both thirsty and flawed, but it has its moments. Volkswagen sure knows how to wring out the last ounce of driving pleasure from a turbocharged engine.
My Jetta was equipped with the standard 1.4-liter turbo four, carried over from last year鈥檚 car. In 2019-spec, it鈥檚 capable of 147 horsepower. That鈥檚 not much, but once you鈥檙e able get past the initial turbo lag, the engine鈥檚 satisfying 184 lb.-ft. 1,400 rpm and lasts nearly until the horsepower peak at 5,000 rpm. As a result of the broad torque curve, the Jetta feels lively and quick - once you鈥檝e got it moving. Still, that鈥檚 not much help when you鈥檙e trying to turn from a side street onto a large street, or make left turns on multi-lane highways, where the turbo lag accelerates your pulse more than it does the car. Nevertheless, you get used to the engine鈥檚 character and drive accordingly. A manual transmission might help in this regard, but VW offers one only for the base S trim level. All other Jettas have a standard 8-speed automatic, which did a good job of shifting crisply and correctly. A Sport mode helps to make the Jetta more responsive, too.
