2019 Volkswagen Jetta Expert Reviews, Specs And Photos

Volkswagen鈥檚 Jetta compact sedan is like an old friend 鈥?familiar and aging well, but aging nonetheless. The current generation was launched with great fanfare as a 2011 model (VW had Katy Perry dance on the hood in New York City鈥檚 Times Square). It was a Jetta redone for American tastes (and sales), replacing the European model that had been a little too small and expensive for the U.S. That model鈥檚 cheaper interior materials and other cost-cutting factors were justifiably criticized for creating a car that was less special, yet 鈥済ood enough鈥?for Americans. But it brought more buyers, so maybe the Germans were right. The car has improved a lot since then, though mostly in how it drives rather than what you see or touch. It鈥檚 good enough now for the budget-priced 2017 Jetta SE to have earned fourth place versus seven mostly newer rivals in Cars.com鈥檚 2017 Compact Sedan Challenge. In that contest, it scored within the leader group that included 2017 versions of the Honda Civic, Kia Forte and Subaru Impreza over a second tier that included the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3 and Chevrolet Cruze.

22,815 with destination as tested) was more fun to drive than most similarly priced rivals; it might have finished higher if it delivered a little more curb appeal. If you liked the restrained, conservative look of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, you鈥檒l recognize the 2017 鈥?even if you have a hard time picking it out in a parking lot. The shape translates into an ample rear seat for two adults, rivaling the Impreza鈥檚 top-of-the-class backseat. At 6-foot-2, I could sit behind a front-seat occupant my size but wasn鈥檛 comfortable in the middle due to an intrusive console between the front seats. The console at least includes cubbies and 12-volt power for the rear, but sadly no air-conditioning vents. The Jetta鈥檚 exterior shape also makes for a 15.7-cubic-foot trunk, rivaling mid-size cars (a 2017 Toyota Camry has 15.4 cubic feet, for example). The sedan鈥檚 trunk is well-designed for convenience, with a lid that pops all the way up when you press the key fob, plus both a center pass-through and a 60/40-split folding backseat for extra room.

If you were OK with the earlier Volkswagen Jetta鈥檚 nicely grained but brittle plastic pieces inside, you鈥檒l be fine with the 2017 SE; the SEL and GLI have some softer-touch panels. I didn鈥檛 mind them, except for the hard door trim against my arm, but the overall design and trim looks dated versus newer, jazzier rivals. And as it has from the start, the interior also suffers by comparison to the love VW lavishes on its Golf鈥檚 cabin 鈥?the Jetta appears to be the neglected American stepchild. The Jetta鈥檚 heavy, perforated imitation leather (V-Tex) on the seats (newly standard on the SE for 2017) looks more serviceable than the cloth you get in most compacts at this base price. I found it to be comfortable, but you鈥檒l never mistake it for the Mazda3鈥檚 soft, is-it-or-isn鈥檛-it faux leather. The two-tone cloth in the base S is your only other choice; even the pricey GLI doesn鈥檛 offer real leather.

The SE鈥檚 front driver鈥檚 seat is manually adjustable six ways, plus lumbar. I managed to find a just-so position, but it would have been easier to do if the big side levers were less clunky to operate (the SEL and GLI have a power seat). The Jetta SE鈥檚 front seats are also heated, a feature that was not universally standard in the budget-price Challenge cars. The dash layout is simple and logical, offering buttons and knobs (thank you, VW!) that make common functions intuitive, unlike sleeker but harder-to-use systems that rely on small and distracting touch-sensitive panels and touchscreen menus, such as the Honda Civic鈥檚. The Jetta, however, lags behind the Civic when it comes to front cabin storage, offering a just-adequate device tray and a small center console bin versus the Honda鈥檚 large and clever new configurable bin. The Volkswagen Jetta is also notably lacking such pizazz as the Civic鈥檚 new digital color gauge display, the Forte鈥檚 sculpted dashboard and the Mazda3鈥檚 classy trim. Even Subaru, known for simpler designs, is looking more up-to-date with its redesigned 2017 Impreza. One Jetta touch does stand above the crowd: its chunky, leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel with controls.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Expert Reviews, Specs And Photos

The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta receives an update for 2015, but the trim lineup remains the same with the base car, a GLI high-performance model, hybrid and TDI diesel. Subtle tweaks to the front and rear of the Jetta are hard to distinguish for the casual observer, but the company says that some of the work, especially up front, enhances aerodynamics. Bi-xenon headlights are optional and have LED daytime running lamps. The grille and fog lights have also been updated. The back has been updated with an integrated spoiler that appears more like a design element than an actual spoiler. LED taillights are also optional. The gauge cluster on most trims is new with an optional color multifunction display. New trim colors and materials are also new depending on the trim, and there are also new fabric colors and seat designs. There is a new diesel powertrain that replaces the outgoing TDI model鈥檚 engine. The new 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel produces 150 horsepower and 236 pounds-feet of torque. VW is estimating mileage from the TDI at 32/45/37 mpg city/highway/combined. The diesel also gets a radiator shutter that closes to allow for faster warm up and then opens and closes based on vehicle speed to improve aerodynamics. Volkswagen has also added new safety features for the 2015 Jetta; most are optional.

There was nothing about actually getting a car and there was no guarantee of a fixed price and no warranty was offered. None of the savers ever got a car and it was not until 1961 that a VW Savers lawsuit was finally ended with a mutual settlement being reached. It was not until the late 1940s that the first Volkswagens managed to find their way into the hands of the private workers it was designed for. The early VW Beetle history pre war production cars went immediately to Hitler's staff while during the war the factory produced the odd looking but very effective military Kubel-wagen and its amphibious brother the Schwimmkubel. Immediate post war production was used by the Germans and their British overlords as barter materials to obtain the steel and machinery necessary to restore the badly damaged plant at Wolsburg. The air cooled VW, Volkswagen's rise to fame since WW11 is now well known. I have my own early VW Beetle history. I once owned a 1957 split window air cooled VW Beetle.

The brakes left a lot to be desired and it was always a hope and pray maneuver to bring the Beetle to a stop in an emergency. But the clutch and steering were feather light, the turning circle was good, the vision was reasonable despite the binocular back window and the finish like everything German was excellent. A lot has been written about early VW Beetle history handling. I agree with all the critics. But in 11,000 miles of driving this split window Beetle I only had one 'moment' and that was in the first 20 miles. I had rushed into an unfamiliar corner, lifted off the accelerator and the swing axles just picked themselves up and skipped. The back wheels immediately rose to their toes and the tail of the Beetle shot from under me. I got a hell of a shock but managed to catch it. After that we were good friends. In fact I soon found out I could hustle the car along at surprisingly good speeds.

With four friends and their luggage and the suspension fairly flattened I found the air cooled VW sat squarely and handled even better, much to the disquiet of my friends. It had one strange quirk through which was never accurately traced but we suspect came from the worn bushes on the entire front end. Like most owners I carried a graduated stick in the front boot and you calculated your mileage and dipped as you travelled. But there was a reserve petrol tap. Even in those days the car had a heater which was in effect hot air from around the exhaust system and engine compartment re-routed into the cabin by levers on the centre tunnel. I got to truly love my Beetle. In those days they were plentiful and fairly cheap. It ended up a beach buggy. A friend and me unbolted the body in about an hour. Rolled it off the floorpan and installed the new aluminium body in about another hour. A little bit of wiring and we were ready to go. So a total car transformation in an afternoon.

We called up a truck and they took the body to the tip. Have you or your family ever owned a Classic VW? Was it a Beetle? Was it a Karmann Ghia? Was it a Type34 Nothback? Was it a Type34 Fastback? Was it a Type 34 Variant? Or, how about a VW Microbus? Its very important to include in the VW Beetle history some other models successfully produced under the VW umbrella. The one probably most known is the Karmann Ghia. The Karmann Ghia had quite a long production life of between 1955 until 1974, with very few changes in that period. Both coupes and convertibles were manufactured. It combined the chassis of the VW Beetle along with the coachbuilding abilities of the German manufacturer - Karmann. 455,000 Karmann Ghias were produced over the 19 year production period, with a surprising amount still around even though rust issues were ever present. Although they were initially powered by the 1192cc single solex engines, with an option of power from a 1195cc with twin Solex carburetters, they were eventually powered by 1500 and 1600cc Beetle engine versions.

That's better but not great, matching the 2019 Toyota Corolla but behind the 2019 Golf, which wears the same tires as the Jetta but still manages to stop in 177 feet. The new Jetta leapfrogs its platform-mate in one area: Digital Cockpit. Four years ago, a larger version of this 10.3-inch reconfigurable screen, which replaces the traditional speedometer and tachometer, was auto-show hoopla from Audi. 40,000-plus Golf R. Even without it, though, lower-trim Jettas have a great analog cockpit. One pod encircles the main instrument panel and infotainment system, with the touchscreen perched high on the dashboard and canted toward the driver. This seamless control center proclaims the Jetta's driver-centric mission even if it's not actually a driver's car. The Jetta is good, certainly better than previous generations. The old cut-rate interior is much improved. The Jetta now offers one of the most comprehensive feature sets in its class, and the price even gets an across-the-board trim. 19,440, which undercuts competitors like the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla by a few hundred dollars. But like most carmakers, Volkswagen reserves the stuff you want鈥攚hether it's a bigger touchscreen or an upgraded audio system or adaptive cruise control鈥攆or the higher trim levels. 2000. Also, you get what you pay for. The Jetta is not as much fun to drive as the Golf. Its performance attributes are not as well balanced.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Expert Reviews, Specs And Photos

The Volkswagen Jetta long has been a premium offering in the compact-sedan segment, but with its 2011-model-year redesign VW aimed to make it a more mainstream model by including a new low-priced version in the lineup. Available with a gas or diesel engine, the five-seat Jetta is offered in sedan and wagon body styles. Competitors include the Honda Civic, Mazda3 and Ford Focus. In an effort to improve the Jetta鈥檚 cabin quality, the SE trim level gains power-reclining front seats, new decorative trim on the dashboard and door panels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a leather shift knob. The exterior gets chrome cues on the grille and window surrounds. There鈥檚 also an adjustable front center armrest for S models with a sunroof. The SEL model takes it a step further, adding a power-adjustable driver鈥檚 seat with manual lumbar, a soft-touch dashboard and a black/beige two-tone interior. The Jetta鈥檚 styling is conservative but handsome, and the car forgoes rounded design elements in favor of more angular, creased sheet metal. Rectangular headlights flank the grille. The sedan鈥檚 profile is clean-looking but not particularly memorable, and Audi-esque taillights finish off the car鈥檚 rear. The Jetta has seating for five.

The 60/40-split backseat folds if you need to carry large items that won鈥檛 fit in the 15.5-cubic-foot trunk. Overall, the sedan鈥檚 interior isn鈥檛 as upscale as previous Volkswagens, and that may disappoint some current VW owners who are accustomed to the brand鈥檚 use of premium materials and its attention to detail. Standard S trim level features include air conditioning, a four-speaker CD stereo with an auxiliary jack and power windows that have a one-touch up/down feature. A 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder is the base engine. A 170-hp, 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder gas engine is available, as is a diesel four-cylinder. True to the GLI moniker鈥檚 heritage, the Jetta鈥檚 uplevel trim packs higher performance and premium features. Under the hood is the automaker鈥檚 turbocharged 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder, which for 2013 now makes 210 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic optional. Other enhancements include a sport-tuned four-wheel independent suspension; lesser Jettas employ a semi-independent rear suspension. A new launch control system is included on GLIs with the dual-clutch transmission, and GLI Autobahn models with navigation now have a backup camera and bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with LED daytime running lights. Bolstered sport seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a touch-screen stereo are standard. Dual-zone automatic climate control, heated simulated leather upholstery and a Fender premium stereo are optional. Exterior styling changes include a honeycomb grille, vertical fog lamps that mimic those on VW鈥檚 GTI hatchback, new LED taillights and dual exhaust tips. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard, with 18-inch alloys optional.

Similar to most small cars the high end bhp car also need some warming up before it can show its true colours. Once the car is heated up, you are off to a nice journey with its offbeat thrum. In the busy city streets the car easily pulls up the sub-1,000 kg kerb weight with the 75 bhp. The power of the engine is translated to the front wheel of the car through a five-speed manual transmission and some slick shifting as well helps the cause. In the near future the Volkswagen up will also come with an automatic gear option as well. On the whole the car is best in class in terms of ride and handling. The steering though might give you some poor feedback, but on the corners it is as efficient as possible. The short wheelbase of the car does add up to the look of the car but with the tight suspensions of the car might be hard on the high speeds. The three door variant of the Volkswagen up will be one of the unique cars with the monocoque body style and also comes in a five door variant which could be a mini MPV or a crossover Up. The Volkswagen up with the 75 bhp has an engine of 999cc with three inline cylinders accompanied by a five speed manual gear transmission. The car powers up to a maximum of 75 bhp at around 6200 rpm. The maximum torque of the car is 95 Nm at 3,000-4, 3000 rpm. The car breaches the 100 kilometer mark in 13.2 seconds. The car reaches a top speed of 171 kmh.
