Mazda revealed that its planners and executives are listening to feedback from Mazda fans; public reaction to the idea could be decisive. It has been several years since Mazda offered high-performance Mazdaspeed versions of its 3 compact or its MX-5 Miata sports car. Although the lovable little two-seater does come in a racy Club version with sticky tires and big brakes and the company does pursue the upper levels of professional sports-car racing, it has been moving its passenger vehicles upmarket. Today's Mazda cars and SUVs still have a sporty, engaging feel, but they're also much more luxurious and refined than ever before, with Audi-esque interiors and more sophisticated styling. We miss the raw performance of those Mazdaspeed models. According to a story on Autocar's website, that may be changing. Mazda program manager Kota Beppu told Autocar that the company is close to greenlighting a serious high-performance version of the 3 to compete directly with Volkswagen's GTI. For the past couple decades, when Volkswagen releases a new Jetta sedan, it means a performance-themed GLI version won't be too far behind. But with the sixth-generation Jetta getting bigger and softer for the U.S., inquiring minds want to know if the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, which is debuting at the 2011 Chicago auto show, will get softer as well. While there are no official EPA ratings yet, Volkswagen expects the GLI's highway mileage to be 31 mpg for the manual and 32 mpg on the automatic. For reference, a 2011 GTI hatch weighs some 29 pounds less than the 2011 Jetta SEL with the 2.5-liter inline-five and is rated at 24/33 mpg city/highway; chances are VW's estimates for the GLI will be spot on. Separating the GLI from lesser Jettas is not left to the turbocharged engine alone. Carried over from the European-spec Jetta, the GLI receives four-way independent rear suspension instead of the twist beam suspension setup found elsewhere in the Jetta's U.S.

We suspect the Euro-tuned suspension will up the fun-to-drive quotient in VW's more potent compact sedan. VW's XDS cross differential system also makes an appearance on the GLI. The technology helps prevent inside wheel spin during cornering, just as it does on the GTI. Distinguishing the GLI from the rest of the lineup are 17- or 18-inch wheels, smoked taillight lenses, a revised front bumper with larger air intake, and a honeycomb grille outlined in bright trim. Inside, the GLI has everything you'd expect from a hotter version of the Jetta: sport bucket seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel, both with red stitching. A 6.5-inch touchscreen display is standard, as is Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, and auto up/down power on all four side windows. 26,315 GLI Autobahn nets heated leather seats, 18-inch wheels, and a Fender sound system. Of course, we'll have to drive it to see if it's become mushy, but with the 2.0-liter turbo and independent rear suspension, we're confident it will represent the spirit of the GLI name.

It looks modern, crips, and stands out in its segment as a premium-type cabin with plenty of cool features.

The "GLI" badge makes things even better by adding features taken from the Golf GTI, like the red stitching on the steering wheel, gear shifter, armrest, and floor mats and sportier front seats. The latter come in black in every trim, but while the base cloth seats have grey piping, the perforated leather upholstery in the Autobahn model sport red accents. There鈥檚 also a Diamond flag decor trim, while the 35th Anniversary model adds unique seat tags, floor mats, and door sills. The Jetta GLI also comes with an extended list of standard features, like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, keyless access and push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, and auto-dimming rear-view mirror. The Driver Personalization setting, which includes setups for driver seat memory, driver assistance system preferences, temperature, ambient lighting color, and radio presents is also standard. You also get App-Connect with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink smartphone integration, as well as the 10-color ambient lighting.

Volkswagen has yet to release performance figures, but the new Jetta GLI should be notably quicker than the old sedan, which needed 6.7 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standing start. Expect the new four-door to get there in less than six seconds. Top speed is likely limited to 155 mph, just like the Golf GTI. But how does it compare to its rivals? Well, the GLI doesn鈥檛 have many rivals, as most vehicles in this niche have less 200 horsepower. The Toyota Corolla, for instance, generates only 140 horses in its most powerful version, while the Honda Civic comes with a 174-horsepower rating. The Civic Si version comes closer tho, thanks to a 1.5-liter four-cylinder mill rated at 205 horsepower and 192 pound-feet. That鈥檚 a 23-horsepower and 66-pound-foot deficit though, so you鈥檙e better off with the Jetta GLI in the performance department. The Subaru WRX is a worthy performance-oriented sedan that the GLI might go against.

Even the base model has features such as blind-spot monitoring, automatic climate control, and keyless entry with push-button start. Higher trims can be had with a panoramic sunroof, a digital gauge cluster, heated and cooled front seats, and an upgraded audio system.

The new Jetta is a little longer and wider than before. Combined with an extra inch of wheelbase, this translates to comfortable occupant space front and rear, although the figures reveal that there鈥檚 actually marginally less legroom than before. The technology and complexity of modern vehicles makes them entirely different to drive, but this latest, seventh-generation Jetta embodies a little of the original鈥檚 responsiveness and feel of being connected to the road. If mildly sporty, European-style sedans are your thing then it鈥檚 well worth a closer look.
