Fancy an upmarket, well-equipped car but don’t have the £40,000 cash needed to put one on the drive? Choosing the right car for your needs is a big enough challenge, but how do you know that you’re getting the best deal? The BMW 3 Series Saloon made quite an impression when it arrived on UK shores earlier in 2019, and BMW is continuing the momentum with this: the 3 Series Touring. The third-generation BMW 1 Series has broken cover, and it's a big change from what came before it.

The standard 4XMOTION full-time four-wheel drive system acts as a sophisticated all-wheel drive system most of the time, and can be placed in four-low for extreme duty off of pavement. A number of electronic control aids also help smooth difficult situations. 50,000 class SUV in the dirt. Urban bumps, potholes, steel plates, and not-quite-covered trenches can be ignored. Because of its solid unibody construction and luxury-car level of soundproofing, the Touareg is as quiet as a luxury car on the road. PERFORMANCE: The 4.2-liter V8 has no problem moving 5,300 lbs. Touareg, and quickly. A dual overhead cam design, it has five valves, three small intakes and two exhausts, per cylinder for improved breathing, high power output, and low emissions. With 310 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 302 lb-ft of torque between 3000 and 4000 rpm, it's more than ample, and can move the Touareg from a standstill to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. It's helped in its task by the six-speed automatic transmission, which features smooth shifting, close ratios, and ``Tiptronic'' manual-shift mode for a luxury-performance driving experience. Towing ability is a strong 7,700 lbs.

Restrained or not, it takes a good mile to appreciate how different the Superleggera feels to the standard car. The Gallardo has always felt grippy and weighty, but has lacked that last few per cent of quick response. In the Superleggera you get the muscular feel but with a new sense of responsiveness. Turn the wheel, and it responds directly. It’s hard to judge the gains without a standard Gallardo for a comparison, but the Superleggera feels more convincing on the road. It cuts through any corner in terrific style and grips like velcro, changing direction with zero inertia. Although it moves, dips and dives without too much fuss, I can’t ignore the terrible ride quality. Because the suspension is set so hard, it has a tendancy to bounce like a stiff spring. It’s as almost as if it can’t cope with the rock hard setting. If you’ve ever experienced a poor, low budget attempt at lowering a car’s suspension ride height, then you’ll know what I mean. Shortly after the sprint from the factory gates, a left turn on the junction at the top of the road takes you on yet another long, almost straight, smooth road, often frequented by Lamborghini test drivers.

For 45 years now, Volkswagens with extra-large cargo areas have been called - unless they are a van - "Variant". To date, more than 6.1 million of them have been sold worldwide. Now there is a new one: The Golf Variant. The third generation of the Golf Variant will be presented in a world premiere at the International Geneva Motor Show. Its market introduction is scheduled for this summer, initially in Europe. This wagon, which is as spacious as it is variable, is being supplemented with the addition of a third - and fourth - body version to the successful Golf product lineup. Version 1: The classic Golf, the "icon", including the "GT", "GTI" and "R32". Version 2: The Golf Plus with greater height, higher seat position and longitudinally adjustable rear bench seat. The new CrossGolf, which is based on the Golf Plus, is also being launched currently. Version 3: The Jetta; although it is not called a Golf, in its DNA it is one.

For years now, this version has proven to be the most successful car of any German car producer in America. The new version 4: The Golf Variant - not only as a TDI that outputs 77 kW / 105 PS and is economical (5,2 liters diesel per 100 km) and clean (137 g/km CO2). More than 1.2 million Golf Variants have been sold over two model generations since 1993. The new generation of the five-door Volkswagen is meant to continue this success story. Once again, the Golf Variant is characterized by an ideal ratio of interior and exterior dimensions. This is precisely what has always been a key factor in its formula for success: Impressive cargo space dimensions together with reasonable exterior dimensions. When the rear bench is folded, the continuously f lat cargo area of the new Golf Variant measures 1,74 meters up to the driver's seatback. There are additional storage compartments under the cargo area and in its side trim. Even if the asymmetrical split bench is not lowered, a respectable 1,07 meters of cargo space depth is still available. The maximum width: 1,29 meters.
