The Compacts Were Much Closer

I've seen it discussed hundreds of times how modern crossovers get "virtually the same" or occasionally "even better" fuel economy to their (platform mate, typically) sedan counterparts. But it didn't make sense for heavier vehicles with worse aerodynamics and I've never seen anybody actually produce raw data. TL;DR: There are no crossovers that get comparable fuel economy. Driving a compact crossover costs about 6 mpg compared to a compact sedan, and a midsized crossover costs about 8 mpg compared to a midsized sedan. Sources: Rated MPGs were obtained from the EPA's website. Real World MPGs were obtained from Fuelly's website. All of the Fuelly averages had a good sample size - the one without was excluded from the comparison (Volkswagen Passat/Touareg/Atlas). Engine sizes: The vast majority of these only have one engine option, or almost all of the real world cars are equipped the same. This was chosen by the most popular engine choice on Fuelly.

Selecting comparable vehicles: This wasn't an exact art. The compacts were much closer, as they're frequently on the same platform. Those that aren't are very comparable in wheelbase (Equinox is 1.2 inches longer than Cruze). On average, compact sedans are rated for 30.8 MPG. On average, compact crossovers are rated for 25.8 MPG. On average, mid-sized sedans are rated for 28.2 MPG. On average, mid-sized crossovers are rated for 21.2 MPG. The mythical crossover that gets "virtually the same" fuel economy as its car sibling is nonexistent in all scenarios. Honda and Mazda are head and shoulders above the rest in compact crossover MPG, but are still 4-5 mpg short of sedans. The largest difference between EPA rated MPG and real world MPG was also Ford, with the Focus on average returning nearly 4 MPG less than advertised. The overall average difference between EPA ratings and real world ratings was 1.12 MPG. The only cars to outperform the EPA ratings on average over the last 7 years in the real world were the Civic, Jetta, Accord, and Corolla, although the Mazda3 and Cruze were both very close to joining that club.
