The Difference Between The VW Golf SportWagen And VW Golf Alltrack

A great example of this problem solving drive is the sheer number of Volkswagen Golf models that are available. For 2018, Volkswagen is offering five Golf models to let drivers find the vehicle that best matches their needs. Unlike competitors, these five models differ in more than just trim level. The 2018 Volkswagen Golf models all serve a unique purpose that meets a specific need within the market. At first glance, two of these models may seem to be very similar. When you dig a little deeper, however, you begin to see that they offer unique advantages in different applications. Volkswagen Golf Alltrack vs. Visually, the VW Golf SportWagen and VW Golf Alltrack both feature a 5-door wagon bodystyle. As opposed to the 5-door hatchback design featured on other VW Golf models, this 5-door wagon style extends the rear cargo area to provide users with more room. Whether you’re looking for a way to transport professional equipment, luggage, or outdoor gear, both models will provide class-leading cargo capacity. Things still don’t get different when we pop the hood.

Both, the Alltrack and the SportWagen feature an efficient and robust 1.8L TSI 4-cylinder engine, delivering 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. Both are available in manual, or DSG (dual-clutch) automatic transmissions. The biggest difference between the two is whether the driver prefers their path to be made of concrete, or dirt. The VW Golf SportWagen is built for efficient and fun urban and highway driving. The VW Golf SportWagen is geared toward those drivers who don’t believe their path ends where the road does. The primary way this difference is manifested is the inclusion on the VW Golf Alltrack of standard 4Motion full-time all-wheel drive. 4Motion works to sense losses of traction, and can provide up to 50% of the engine torque to the rear wheels to help move the car during traction loss and individual wheel slippage. Along with 4Motion, the VW Golf Alltrack features a unique Off-Road Mode which lets the vehicle optimize traction control to move your Golf through uneven terrain.

An additional feature found in the Hill Descent Control works during downhill climb and controls the application of your brakes. The Alltrack looks as trail-worthy as it feels with almost an inch higher ride height, enhanced body cladding, and premium roof rails. 4Motion is available on the VW Golf SportWagen, but only at the S (base) trim level. Additionally, Hill Descent Control and Off-Road Mode are not offered for this model. Drivers who want the premium features of the VW Golf Alltrack (panoramic sunroof, paddle shifters, 17″ wheels, heated seats, etc) in the SportWagen would need to opt for higher trim levels which do not offer 4Motion full-time all-wheel drive. Should I get the VW Golf Alltrack or the VW Golf SportWagen? That’s a great question, starting price on the Alltrack is higher due to its number of standard features. With 4Motion all-wheel drive as an available option on the SportWagen, that doesn’t have to be your sole determining factor. If you’re looking for a capable and fun 5-door wagon that provides peace-of-mind in less-than-great weather/driving conditions, the VW Golf SportWagen S is probably a great option! There’s no better way to find the perfect car than to test drive a bunch of them!
