Even the new 160-PS top version of the 1.4 TSI achieves a top value at 6.3 liters. The 160-PS TSI’s fuel consumption too was lowered by 1.6 liters compared to the retired 150-PS FSI. With the exception of the entry-level versions, all gasoline and diesel engines may be paired with Volkswagen’s dual clutch transmission (DSG). Either a 6-speed or 7-speed DSG is used, depending on engine torque. This means that on the VW Golf the extremely efficient and agile DSG has replaced the classic torque converter automatic. Just how economical the alliance of TSI plus DSG can be is demonstrated by the example of average fuel consumption on the 1.4 TSI with 160 PS and 7-speed DSG: 6.0 liters (139 g/km CO2). This high-tech duo replaces the 2.0 FSI with 150 PS and 6-speed automatic. Average fuel consumption there: 8.3 liters. Savings: 2.3 liters per hundred kilometers or 28 percent - progress at its best.
The R32 debuted for the 2003 model year as a limited-production model ranging above the GTI as the ultimate performance model of the Mk4 Golf. Previously introduced by the New Beetle RSi, the R series was designed specifically as a performance brand to the Volkswagen brand akin to BMW's M series or the AMG series of Mercedes-Benz. This model adds aggressive styling elements to the otherwise subtle Golf body including a redesigned front-end, oversize exhaust pipes, and 18 inch, 15 spoke alloy wheels. It houses an EA390 codenamed VR6 engine with 3.2 liter displacement that peaks at 6250 rpm at 237 hp (177 kW) and provides 236 ft·lb (320 N·m) of torque at 2800 rpm. Due to its high-power engine, it has an all-wheel drive in place of the GTI's front-wheel drive. Volkswagen still doesn’t have a full all-electric car program from the ground up in production, but it is already seeing demand for EVs increasing and it decided to turn to its compliance EV, the e-Golf, to satisfy demand. Last week, VW announced that it will be adding a new shift on the e-Golf production line at the Transparent Factory in Dresden in order to double their production capacity. “To meet higher demand for the e-Golf, production capacity at the Transparent Factory is to be increased. From March 2018, production is to increase step-by-step from 35 to 70 vehicles per day. In order to help mitigate the impact of emissions from diesel cars, which came even more to light following the Dieselgate, automakers are offering rebates when scrapping an old diesel car and buying a less polluting vehicle. The “environmental incentives” vary from €2,000 to €10,000 and buyers can get greater incentives when buying an electric vehicle to replace their diesel car. Volkswagen says that “about eight percent” of the buyers in this program end up buying EVs. Right now VW has nothing else to respond to the demand than the e-Golf, which explains this move. To be fair, you can do worse than a e-Golf when it comes to compliance EVs. The 2017 e-Golf received a significant range increase with an EPA rating of 125 miles thanks to a new 35.8 kWh battery pack. But it’s definitely not optimized to be an electric vehicle, which is why VW is using a brand new platform built especially for electric vehicles in order to launch its next-generation EVs. Though it looks like the automaker, just like most established automakers in my opinion, misjudged the demand for EVs. It hasn’t planned to start producing them in volume until 2019, but now it is forced to turn to a compliance EV as regulations are driving demand even in their home country.
