There have been 3 safety recalls issued from NHTSA. Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Golf and Jetta SportWagen, 2007-2010 Passat sedans and wagon, 2012-2014 Passat sedan and Eos, 2009-2014 CC, 2009-2012 Audi Q5, and 2010-2011 Audi A5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture. Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death. Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflators, free of charge. Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, Passat, and Tiguan, 2010-2013 Eos and Jetta, 2011-2014 Golf and GTI, and 2011-2013 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag. Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury. Remedy: The remedy for this recall is still under development. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Consequence: The reduced durability of the trailing arm may result in its sudden fracture, possibly causing loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash. Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a sheet metal inlay on the rear axle trailing arms designed to prevent a sudden loss of control in the event of trailing arm sudden fracture, free of charge. Owners will be mailed an interim notification in November 2014 and will be mailed a second letter when remedy parts are available.

6 billion a year in insurance claims. Among the worst performers were the Nissan Maxima and Volkswagen Jetta. 9,000 each in estimated damage from four simulated bumps - two each at three mph and six mph. The Nissan Maxima, VW Passat and the Pontiac G6 each sustained the most amount of damage. 4,500 worth of damage were sustained in just one of the tests - the six mph full-width frontal impact. The IIHS said hoods, fenders, headlights and air-conditioning condensers needed repairs. Adrian Lund, the IIHS president, said that in only two of the 68 bump tests of the 17 cars did the bumpers fully protect other components from significant damage: one of a Saturn Aura and another of a Hyundai Sonata. Lund said. "In the rest, what we found is that bumpers aren't up to the job." Federal regulations require bumpers to protect only up to 2.5 mph. If there are worst performers, there should also be the ideal ones.
