As with the current GTI, the GLI doesn鈥檛 require tire-squealing heroics to get the best out of it - just smooth, easy inputs. It鈥檚 a great deal of fun, certainly much more than you鈥檇 expect from such a plain wrapper. Neither feels like the soft option - just pick your favourite flavour and enjoy. Is the GLI a better blend of practical and fun than the GTI? Not really. But it is a little quieter, a better highway commuter and a better value. The GTI has a lower starting price, but the GLI comes standard with keyless entry, navigation, a power moonroof and a leather interior. It鈥檚 thousands less than an equivalent GTI. Spacious and comfortable, fairly priced and well-equipped - and also capable of slaying a dragon or two. Fans of fast Volkswagen four-doors, take heart: The new GLI is greater than the sum of its parts. The Jetta GLI is powered by a turbocharge 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. A unique grille, proper dual exhaust pipes, lower suspension and a set of standard 18-inch alloys do relatively little to jazz up the GLI鈥檚 exterior styling.

LED headlights and taillights are standard, but over all, the GLI is nearly invisible on the road. If you like to fly below the radar, that鈥檚 a feature. Both front seats are heated and ventilated. Driver and passenger get heated and ventilated leather seats that are adequately bolstered, yet still comfortable for longer drives. Rear passengers get more legroom than in a Golf, and heated rear outboard seats are also standard. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine makes 228 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and a peak of 258 lb.-ft. 1,700 rpm. The excellent low-end torque makes the GLI very smooth to drive at slower speeds, and combines with the limited-slip to accelerate briskly when exiting corners. Zero to 100 kilometres an hour should take around six seconds. The GLI gets VW鈥檚 new digital dash, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and satellite navigation with an eight-inch touchscreen. The GLI has a practical 399-litre trunk.

The GLI鈥檚 399-litre trunk is less flexible than the Golf鈥檚 hatchback, but provides plenty of practicality. Note that the trunk lid is the old-fashioned spring-and-arm kind rather than struts, so there is some intrusion into the cargo area when loading it right up. No longer a poor cousin to the GTI, the new GLI is every bit the performer that its hatchback cousin is, with slightly smoother road manners and an attractive price.
