2019 Volkswagen Jetta Vs. 2019 Volkswagen Passat: Head To Head

With a low starting price and a complete redesign this year, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has a lot to offer. The infotainment system has been upgraded to have a slightly larger screen, the fuel economy has improved, and there are more optional features to choose from over five trim levels. There鈥檚 still plenty of room inside, even though dimensions have decreased slightly, and the seats are comfortable over long drives. The Jetta is less sporty than it used to be, and now there鈥檚 only one engine to choose from. There are also a few too many hard plastics in the all-new interior. But when compared to the Passat, it鈥檚 still quicker, and the interior is nicer. Shoppers who need a larger car will still find plenty to like about the 2019 Volkswagen Passat. There are only two trim levels, but they have more standard features than the Jetta. The Passat also has a larger trunk for those who need more cargo space. The Passat is built for comfort rather than sporty driving, so you鈥檒l find a smooth ride but not much in the way of athletic handling. It鈥檚 worth noting that both don鈥檛 score particularly well in our new car rankings. Better options than the Jetta in the compact sedan class include the Mazda3, Kia Forte, and Honda Civic. Better alternatives to the midsize Passat include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Mazda6.

I have a habit of reading what other reviewers feel about a car I am driving and more than one made a note about the uncomfortable front seats. That wasn鈥檛 my observation as the seats kept my wife and I more than comfortable during the long drive. All the controls are within easy reach meaning I didn鈥檛 have to take my eyes of the road to adjust the air conditioning or change the station. Unlike some car companies, VW has maintained using large knobs to control the air conditioning and radio. I recently drove a few Hondas where you have to find a sliding scale on the infotainment system to control the radio volume. It forces you to take your eyes of the road for a second or two if you are not use to using the system. The Jetta鈥檚 eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with proximity sensor remains my favourite among car manufacturers. It is easy to use, my phone connected immediately and it still features a CD player. Other features with the Highline include: a remote start (automatic transmission only); ventilated front seats which adds to the comfort of making long drives; ambient interior lighting; and six-way power driver鈥檚 seat with lumbar support. The driver optional assistance package features the adaptive cruise control, front assist autonomous braking, lane assist and automatic high beams. The Jetta remains a solid car and performer for Volkswagen. It has a great interior, a nice smooth ride and impressive styling making it a sedan worth your time if you are in the market for a new car. DRIVE METHOD: Front-wheel-drive, eight-speed transmission. ENGINE: 1.4litre turbocharged (147 hp, 184 lb./ft.
