2019 VW Jetta GLI Vs. 2019 VW Golf GTI: More Different Than Expected

Here comes the inevitable comparison review everyone has been waiting ever since Volkswagen revealed the all-new 2019 Jetta GLI. The affordable sports sedan faces its hatchback equivalent, the 2019 Golf GTI. Both models are based on the same MQB platform and share key components, including the 228 hp 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the transmission (a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic). Other common parts include the front brakes, electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, variable-ratio electric power steering system, and much more. 1,600 in the United States. In theory, that should make it the obvious choice for the budget-minded customer. Also watch: All-New VW Jetta GLI: The American Petrolhead鈥檚 Compact Sedan? In the video, the cars are subjected to a series of measured tests, and the results are very close. For example, the Jetta GLI beats the Golf GTI from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) and in the quarter-mile run. However, the margins are absolutely insignificant. Mind you, the results are not that relevant when you take into account the fact that the VW Golf GTI was on all-season tires while the Jetta GLI was fitted with summer tires. As a result, in the 60-0 mph braking test, the sedan needed a much shorter distance to come to a complete stop compared to the hatchback. One can鈥檛 help but wonder if the very different sets of tires compromise the results of this comparison review. To some extent, they do, but at the same time, they reveal how capable the Golf GTI is 鈥?even with the tire handicap, it鈥檚 still almost as quick as the 2019 Jetta GLI. The GTI aced the handling course but lost to the GLI in the everyday usability category. Overall, the video reveals that there are more differences than similarities between the two hot VWs.

It proves VW still has the ability to inject otherwise mainstream vehicles with something unique. What鈥檚 it gonna cost me? 20,195 with an automatic. That trim comes with LED headlights, taillights and daytime running lights, comfy cloth seats, a backup camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and a 6.5-inch infotainment system. While that鈥檚 definitely a bargain, we found the interior of the S model comfy but too austere. Our favorite Jetta is the SE. 23,005 gets you fake-leather seats that are heated up front, a large moonroof, push-button start, pre-collision alerts and braking, climate control and blind spot monitoring. 23,845 and adds unique 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights and other minor trim changes inside and out, a unique steering wheel and brake-induced torque vectoring (a fancy system to help handling in a turn). We also drove the SEL. 25,265 you get fancier LED headlights, four driving modes (Normal, Eco, Sport and Custom), a trick 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a Beats Audio stereo system, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control and satellite radio. We definitely recommend this trim level too if it鈥檚 within your budget, but our favorite is still the SE. Finally there鈥檚 the loaded SEL Premium. 27,795 you get fog lights, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, real leather seats and fancier 17-inch alloy wheels. Nice stuff, but you can save your money and live without it. The Jetta is in one of the biggest segments in the auto industry in terms of volume, so you have a lot of choices. Our favorites are the Honda Civic, the Mazda3 and the Subaru Impreza. But the Jetta easily competes with all three of those. Kia has a new Forte due soon, but we haven鈥檛 driven it. Toyota鈥檚 Corolla, Chevy鈥檚 Cruze and Hyundai鈥檚 Elantra are perfectly fine but uninspired. Ford鈥檚 Focus and Nissan鈥檚 Sentra are getting old at this point.

If the Volkswagen Jetta 1.4T sedan were a drink, it鈥檇 be whiskey on the rocks. It is a straight-up, no-nonsense compact sedan that exceeds the few promises it makes. We said as much about an automatic-transmission model we tested last year, and it holds true even more so with the more satisfying stick-shift version. Other compact four-doors may be sexier (Mazda 3), newer (Chevrolet Cruze), or inexplicably ubiquitous (Toyota Corolla), but the Jetta is solid goods. The current Jetta looks just as much like a child鈥檚 drawing of a three-box sedan as it did back in 2010 when it was introduced. There鈥檚 a long rectangle propped on top of four wheels with a smaller rectangle on top of it, adorned with rectilinear headlights and taillights, door handles, and not much else. Behind the Jetta鈥檚 basic veneer, you鈥檒l find competent driving dynamics, solid engineering, and above-average cabin space. Mostly, these hidden attributes are the result of VW鈥檚 multiyear improvement regimen for the Jetta.
