Authorities in Colorado on Tuesday released dashboard camera footage showing the moment deputies shot and killed a man suspected of stabbing to death his aunt and her teenage daughter in New Mexico. The deputy-involved shooting took place on May 24 outside the Fort Morgan Walmart, in the 1300 block of Barlow Road. Last month, Morgan County District Attorney Brittny Lewton found that the use of deadly force in Montano's case was justified. The wanted man, later identified as Montano, was said to be traveling in a red Volkswagen Jetto with New Mexico plates. It was initially thought the man was suicidal. Sometime later, dispatchers received information Montano鈥檚 cellphone had been 鈥榩inged鈥?in Morgan County. Then shortly before 8am, a deputy radioed that he had located the unoccupied Jetta at the local Walmart store. While the deputy was keeping an eye on the suspect鈥檚 car, Undersheriff Martin responded to the area in his unmarked vehicle and parked a short distance away where he had a clear view of the Jetta. He was later joined by his boss, Sheriff Crone.
Montano was hit in the torso, are and upper leg. Fort Morgan police officers and Colorado State Patrol troopers also responded to the scene and set up positions out of sight of the Jetta. After the Colorado authorities reached out to their counterparts in New Mexico, a decision was made to arrest Montano when he returned to his car. Montano was opening the driver鈥檚 side door when he found himself surrounded. Montano got into the driver鈥檚 seat and Martin reportedly saw him reach over to the front passenger seat, despite being ordered to not move. 鈥楾he suspect slammed the door and at that point Sheriff Crone felt the suspect would start the car and ram his patrol vehicle in an attempt to get out,鈥?the statement said. His right hand came out first, and both Crone and Martin saw him holding what appeared to be a handgun. 鈥楿ndersheriff Martin, who not only thought the item in the suspect鈥檚 hand was a gun, but also felt by the suspect鈥檚 gaze looking directly at him, the suspect intended to kill him,鈥?the documented stated.
Crone fired the first shot, and then he and Martin fired seven additional rounds, causing Montano to collapse to the ground, four seconds after he opened the car door. He suffered seven wounds to the torso, arm and upper leg. 鈥?and 鈥榡ust kill me鈥? The object in his hand had fallen on the pavement and was now seen to be a black knife, with the blade open. Montano was transported to Colorado Plains Medical Center and then flown by helicopter to Medical Center of the Rockies, where he died the next day, despite receiving 150 pints of blood and undergoing multiple surgeries. Montano was originally from Sterling, Colorado, but had moved to Louisiana as a teen. While there, he was arrested for fatally stabbing another eighteen-year old man to death and received a 10-year prison sentence on a manslaughter conviction. An investigation has determined that Montano was apparently trying to run a marijuana distribution business out of his aunt鈥檚 apartment, and he killed her after she confronted him about it. After killing the mother and daughter, Montano texted a woman to tell her about the murders and even sent her pictures of the bodies. The ex-convict then went to the home of another relative, whom he had threatened to kill, but could not enter the residence and left, making his way to Colorado, where he also had family. He apparently sent text messages to those relatives threatening to kill them as well. Investigators speculate Montano was headed there to make good on his threat. Montano鈥檚 text messages following the killings of Debra Martinez and her daughter indicated he expected to die.
