The standard 2019 VW Jetta has lost a couple of things in its current form vs. 2018 model, but the good news is, it鈥檚 still a nimble driver. In the missing column is the option for a higher-powered (170 horsepower) 1.8-liter engine, and a multilink rear suspension. For 2019, the Jetta uses a 147-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, while the former suspension has been swapped for a simpler torsion beam. Despite this, the new Jetta feels lively and agile. Acceleration is peppy, especially in Sport mode, and the handling retains the European feel that has been associated with the Jetta for decades. By 鈥淓uropean feel,鈥?we mean that it is both agile and fun in corners while, still proving a taut yet comfortable ride on the highway. The new 8-speed automatic transmission is a high point. Shifts are smooth, and the system eagerly kicks down gears when needed, such as for high-speed passing. Manual transmission fans take note: The new 6-speed is a joy to use. It鈥檚 easy, light and engaging. For those with slightly bigger budgets, the also-new 2019 Jetta GLI rectifies all that鈥檚 missing from the standard model. Its 2.0-liter turbo engine offers plenty of oomph with 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while its rear suspension is a more sophisticated multilink setup. Moreover, all models come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic as an option. The result is a superbly enjoyable performance sedan. The 2019 Jetta GLI is both fun to fling around corners, yet also comfortable enough for everyday commuting. The GLI is offered in three trims, but we particularly like the midtrim 35th Anniversary Edition as it鈥檚 the only one to get the DCC adaptive damping suspension with a 鈥渃omfort鈥?mode.
But when you select Sport and the Dynamic Chassis Control adjusts the damping and rebound of the shocks, the Arteon changes instantly into a well-planted, aggressive car that tracks flat through curves with no surprises. Or select Comfort and wallow along the interstate with everyone else. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - check. Blind-spot monitoring and active cruise control - check. This is a major jump from the CC, which could fit 374 litres of stuff in the trunk. The Arteon benefits from its fastback design, which allows the rear door to be basically a hatch. There鈥檚 now 643 litres of room behind the 60/40 split rear seats, and if they鈥檙e folded down, that bumps up to a very impressive 1,558 litres. This is on a par with the Buick Regal Sportback - again, not a hatch according to the maker, but every bit as spacious as one. A nicely rendered car, with all the advantages and breakthroughs that you鈥檇 expect from a company that employs 44,000 engineers. Ultimately, though, it blends into the crowded background rather than stands out, and at this price, a buyer should expect just a little more pizzazz. If you drive a below-average amount each year, especially if you drive only short distances at a time, it鈥檚 a good idea to have the oil changed according to months rather than miles. Every six months is recommended in that case. Vehicles that tow trailers or operate in temperature extremes may also need more frequent oil changes. Although your VW鈥檚 oil change is among the lowest-cost services you can have done, it is all-important to the well-being and long life of the vehicle.
