Singapore, 22 June 2016 - Families have a very clear idea of what a vehicle perfectly tailored to their needs should offer. With their children on board, they need space - a lot of space for a comfortable life on the move. They also need storage bins and trays - lots of them. Variability is very important as well - for as many short or tall people as possible. Then there鈥檚 safety, for which no compromises will be accepted. Volkswagen had all of this in mind when developing the Touran, a vehicle that鈥檚 a true all-rounder. Whether it鈥檚 a trip to the football pitch, a drive to school or a holiday excursion - the Touran is the most popular MPV in Germany and also extremely successful in Singapore. Indeed, more than 1.9 million people have opted to purchase this Volkswagen since its debut in 2003. Now, an all-new generation of the MPV is being launched.
It鈥檚 a Touran that鈥檚 been improved and made more efficient in every way - an MPV whose systematically implemented perfect attention to detail ensures it stands alone in the 7-seater MPV segment. Moreover, if one sets aside the model鈥檚 new design, expanded interior space and cargo capacity, lower weight and efficient new engine, it becomes clear that the perfectly detailed solutions are in fact what makes the new Touran so unique. The second generation Touran makes a convincing impression with its newly developed and highly variable fold-flat seat system. Then there are the important everyday details, such as storage bins, of which there are as many as 47 that can be used to hold all sorts of items. The air-conditioning system represents yet another perfectly implemented detail: A new three-zone Pure Air Climatronic system, which includes a new filtering technology. Here, an air quality sensor with an active biogenic filter maintains air quality at a consistently high level and prevents the infiltration of pollutants, even up to and including fungal spores and allergens. This is a never-before-seen technology.
Volkswagen has made advances in active and passive safety through the use of a crash-optimised body that includes high-strength steels (resulting in an increase of 25 percent in the static stiffness of the body structure). The Touran also has seven airbags as standard, including a driver鈥檚 knee airbag, a chassis with passenger car-like attributes and a range of new assistance systems that鈥檚 pioneering in this class. The assistance systems featured for the first time in the Touran include the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System as standard, the Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection system, and Front Assist with City Emergency Braking. New comfort and convenience features in the Touran include driving profile selection and high-performance LED headlights. The new LED headlights replace the xenon system previously used in the Touran, and feature a dynamic cornering function as well as LED daytime running lights. Another new feature is the electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, which prevents unintentional rolling from a standstill position.
The direct-injection turbocharged 1.4 TSI engine in the Touran is a completely new design. Producing 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, it delivers strong performance (0-100 km/h in only 8.9 seconds) while consuming only 5.6 L/100km of fuel in the combined driving cycle. The Touran is fitted as standard with automatic engine stop/start and battery regeneration systems as standard. The Touran is available in two equipment levels - the Trendline and Comfortline. Even the Trendline is very well equipped, with leather upholstery, cruise control, automatic headlamps and wipers, an electronic vehicle immobiliser and the new Pure Air Climatronic system all coming as standard. The Comfortline has even more equipment, including a multifunction steering wheel, rear view camera and panoramic sunroof. An additional equipment package (EQP) comprising four features - LED headlights, keyless entry and starting, driving profile selection and Front Assist - can be ordered for both the Trendline and Comfortline models.
The new Touran is 4,527 mm long, which makes it 130 mm longer than the previous model. Nevertheless, despite having the largest cargo capacity in its class, it retains compact exterior dimensions. This is due to an innovative design approach. The maximum utilisation of a minimum vehicle footprint, with all the associated practical advantages for driving and manoeuvring, is made possible by the innovative Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB). Thanks to the optimum packaging enabled by the MQB, the increase in overall length could be applied to an unusually large extent to the wheelbase, which at 2,791 mm is now 113 mm longer than the previous model鈥檚. The longer wheelbase directly increases the usable interior space. The body of the new Touran is 1,829 mm wide (an increase of 36 mm) and 1,628 mm high (a decrease of 6 mm). The increased length and width and the reduced height give the vehicle considerably more dynamic-looking proportions - and provided an excellent opportunity for the designers to exercise their creativity. The design of the car has been completely reworked.
