South Korea Fines, Halts Sales Of VW Cars For Forged Tests

16million and has been banned from selling 80 models for faking emissions test documents. South Korea has rapped the German car maker alleging it also fabricated noise level tests. The country's government alleges that since 2007, Volkswagen AG has sold 83,000 units of Volkswagen, Audi and Bentley cars using the forged documents, including some models of the Golf, the Jetta, the Beetle and the Tiguan. The country fined the manufacturer 17.8 billion won and suspended sales of 80 models. Ministry of Environment official Hong Dong-kon said the government revoked Volkswagen's certifications, effective Tuesday, because submitting forged documents to authorities is against the law. Hong said Volkswagen likely forged documents to expedite imports of its cars. When importing the Audi A7 to South Korea, for example, the car maker submitted the test results for the A6, which it has not sold there. Volkswagen officials said the company had made 'revisions' in the documents during a hearing last week, according to the ministry's statement. But it objected to the sales ban as 'excessive' because the vehicles still met the emissions and noise level standards. It normally takes three months to get vehicles certified by the government before sales. We regret that MOE has imposed the sanctions against our vehicles,' the company said in an official statement. The move is the latest penalty slapped on the German carmaker in South Korea since the diesel emissions scandals last year. 12.7 million) and banned sales of its diesel vehicles for outfitting them with software that distorted results of emissions tests. That issue is still under investigation.

Moreover, if one sets aside the model鈥檚 new design, expanded interior space and cargo capacity, lower weight and efficient new engine, it becomes clear that the perfectly detailed solutions are in fact what makes the new Touran so unique. The second generation Touran makes a convincing impression with its newly developed and highly variable fold-flat seat system. Then there are the important everyday details, such as storage bins, of which there are as many as 47 that can be used to hold all sorts of items. The air-conditioning system represents yet another perfectly implemented detail: A new three-zone Pure Air Climatronic system, which includes a new filtering technology. Here, an air quality sensor with an active biogenic filter maintains air quality at a consistently high level and prevents the infiltration of pollutants, even up to and including fungal spores and allergens. This is a never-before-seen technology. Volkswagen has made advances in active and passive safety through the use of a crash-optimised body that includes high-strength steels (resulting in an increase of 25 percent in the static stiffness of the body structure).

The Touran also has seven airbags as standard, including a driver鈥檚 knee airbag, a chassis with passenger car-like attributes and a range of new assistance systems that鈥檚 pioneering in this class. The assistance systems featured for the first time in the Touran include the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System as standard, the Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection system, and Front Assist with City Emergency Braking. New comfort and convenience features in the Touran include driving profile selection and high-performance LED headlights. The new LED headlights replace the xenon system previously used in the Touran, and feature a dynamic cornering function as well as LED daytime running lights. Another new feature is the electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, which prevents unintentional rolling from a standstill position. The direct-injection turbocharged 1.4 TSI engine in the Touran is a completely new design. Producing 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque, it delivers strong performance (0-100 km/h in only 8.9 seconds) while consuming only 5.6 L/100km of fuel in the combined driving cycle.

The Touran is fitted as standard with automatic engine stop/start and battery regeneration systems as standard. The Touran is available in two equipment levels - the Trendline and Comfortline. Even the Trendline is very well equipped, with leather upholstery, cruise control, automatic headlamps and wipers, an electronic vehicle immobiliser and the new Pure Air Climatronic system all coming as standard. The Comfortline has even more equipment, including a multifunction steering wheel, rear view camera and panoramic sunroof. An additional equipment package (EQP) comprising four features - LED headlights, keyless entry and starting, driving profile selection and Front Assist - can be ordered for both the Trendline and Comfortline models. The new Touran is 4,527 mm long, which makes it 130 mm longer than the previous model. Nevertheless, despite having the largest cargo capacity in its class, it retains compact exterior dimensions. This is due to an innovative design approach. The maximum utilisation of a minimum vehicle footprint, with all the associated practical advantages for driving and manoeuvring, is made possible by the innovative Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB).
