2019 VW Jetta (Mk7)

Volkswagen Jetta R on the way? Earlier in February 2019, Volkswagen unveiled its new Jetta GLI at the Chicago Auto Show, with the fresh performance derivative sitting atop the new seventh-generation line-up in the United States. But now a high-ranking VW executive refuses to rule out the possibility of a Jetta R being added at a later stage. 鈥淣ever say never,鈥?Derrick Hatami, vice president of sales and marketing for Volkswagen of America, told Motor Trend when asked about the chances of a Jetta R reaching production. Hatami admitted the new GLI could end up cannibalising GTI sales in North America, but said he saw potential for more volume from the sedan than the hatchback. If that indeed turns out to be the case, offering a Jetta R would certainly make sense. Of course, if the Jetta were to receive the 鈥淩鈥?badge, it鈥檇 be another high-performance model not available to South Africans. VW also recently confirmed the T-Roc R for production, but this model is likewise not expected in South Africa since the standard version is not on the cards for SA (instead, we鈥檒l receive the new, smaller T-Cross). Thanks to its sport suspension, the Jetta GLI sits some 15 mm lower to the ground than the standard model. Standard LED projector headlamps flank a black honeycomb grille with a red accent line, while brakes from the Golf R (complete with red-painted callipers) are framed by new 18-inch alloys. At the rear, standard LED taillamps are joined by a new spoiler and model-specific rear bumper complete with finned diffusor and chrome dual exhaust tips.

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has finally arrived at the Donaldsons Volkswagen showroom. Buyers are in store for an all-new experience with the popular compact sedan. Designers and engineers worked overtime to redesign 2019 Jetta and take advantage of everything the automaker鈥檚 MQB architecture platform has to offer. In addition to providing a sleeker exterior, the 2019 Jetta is also quicker than previously-produced models. One of the clearest ways to examine the boost in performance is to take a look at the 0-to-60 mph time of the 2019 VW Jetta. While Volkswagen has made some significant gains in this area, exact results will depend on some different factors. Let鈥檚 take a closer look together. How fast is the 2019 Jetta to 60 mph? According to the best available information, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta will have zero-to-60 mph time of between 8.3 to 8.6 seconds depending on which transmission a customer chooses. The turbocharged, 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine used by the all-new 2019 Jetta can be attached to a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Not only will the updated powertrain make the 2019 Jetta more exciting to drive, but it provides the additional performance without sacrificing fuel economy. Trim grades using either transmission choice can record 30 miles per gallon in the city and 40 miles per gallon on the highway. What is the best kind of fuel to use? Most automakers will falsely inflate performance scores of their vehicles by using more expensive gasoline formulated with more octane in the mix. Volkswagen engineers made adjustments to the power plant used by the 2019 Jetta to be able to hit its performance targest using regular (87 octane) grade gasoline. The secret to this outcome is in how VW reconfigured the interior plumbing of the new Jetta鈥檚 engine. Coincidentally, this will also help heat the car up during drives on cold days.

What was once the top-selling car of all time is now far from it, as the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle lives on for one more year before it is lost to the annals of history (at least for now). Still, we give this fitting tribute to the original peoples鈥?car 5.6 out of 10 overall for its quality, warranty, and attitude. For 2019, the Dune and Coast special edition trims are no more, so all that鈥檚 left are the S, SE, and SE with Premium Package trims to keep the nameplate alive, as well as the somewhat ominous Final Edition. The base S model also gets standard blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alerts, but automatic emergency braking is still not available. All trim levels are still available as a coupe or convertible. The Beetle Final Edition SE and SEL trims include a sunroof and body-color side mirrors as well as heated washer nozzles, while the SEL features LED daytime running lights and taillights. There are also two unique colors, Safari Uni beige and Stonewashed Blue, the latter of which was most recently seen on the 2016 Denim Edition.

As for powertrains, there鈥檚 still only one, so those looking for a hotter Bug are best suited turning to the used car market. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 174 horsepower and is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission, with no option for a manual. The Beetle is fun to drive, with quick responses and a suspension that's on the firm side. It's not a sharp corner carver, but it's better-composed than its retro looks suggest. Inside, the Beetle's retro theme carries over with a dashboard painted to match the exterior and no shortage of vintage kitsch. It's not especially spacious and even the priciest Beetle on the lot has too many econo-car trim bits inside. Thankfully, a great warranty remains, with 6 years or 72,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage, whichever comes first. The base Beetle S is now better-equipped with its additional safety features, not to mention synthetic leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as standard, 17-inch wheels, and keyless ignition.
