To some, this Jetta felt cheap. Not so with the Jetta GLI, which returned for the 2012 model year. Here is a well-equipped sixth-gen car with an independent rear suspension, sport tuning, lowered ride height and limited-slip differential. Spotters should look for the larger front spoiler with vertical fog lights, red brake calipers and dual exhaust tips. Inside, the GLI is fitted for serious fun with large-bolster sport seats and a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel and shifter, all with contrasting red stitching. Your feet play with aluminum pedals. Upgrading the Jetta GLI to the Autobahn trim gets you the Fender-branded Panasonic audio system with 400 watts of sonic boom and a subwoofer in the trunk. VW fans recognize the upgraded hardware鈥攊t comes from the revered Golf GTI hatchback. But on the showroom floor, Americans overwhelmingly choose sedans. The GTI also donates Volkswagen鈥檚 vaunted 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Power flows to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automated transmission.

The purist in us favors the manual, but we tested a 2012 Jetta GLI with the DSG dual-clutch transmission. The first thing we learned is that the traction and stability control cannot be turned off. So a 0-60-mph sprint starts with a brief burst of wheelspin at launch as the turbo boost rises but is quickly shut down by the electronic watchdogs. We reached 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 15.1 seconds at 93.3 mph. Now, here鈥檚 a hint for DSG owners: Put the shifter in sport mode, which permits the engine to briefly rev past the 6,000-rpm redline before changing gears. Thrown into corners, it takes a little care to push the GLI just short of the limit, where the momentum-killing electronics take over. We covered the slalom in 7.9 seconds at 42.4 mph and pulled 0.84 g on the skid pad. Overall, the car feels quite stable, and the sport seats grip you without inflicting pain. The Jetta GLI鈥檚 performance makes owners grin, but the value鈥攐n the sticker and at the gas pump鈥攈as them bust out a smile. 3-series,鈥?wrote one owner.

I was not sure that I wanted a car; I really wanted an SUV. The only other vehicle I tested was a Jeep Wrangler. I decided if I was going to have a car, I wanted something sporty that would handle well on tight country roads and on the highway. I liked the way the Jetta GLI felt. My main constraint was budget. I tell people that I feel I got a lot of car for my money. Lauren Warner, Easton, Pa. My 2013 Jetta GLI Autobahn with navigation has been more fun than I could have ever anticipated. Fit and finish are excellent. Great seats, awesome Fender sound system and very quiet at highway speed. The DSG transmission is a real treat. Sport mode flat-out moves. Launch control was an unexpected surprise. Drives like a proper German sedan should. Fuel economy has been exactly what was noted on the window sticker. This car looks and feels more expensive than it is. I was in the market for something small, sporty and fun with a turbocharged engine and manual transmission. The GLI fit the bill and has been a great car. Many aftermarket upgrades are available for it. My two biggest complaints are the rattle-prone interior and notchy, long-throwing stick shift. If I could do it all over again, I would have gotten the DSG instead. All in all, it鈥檚 been a good car with no reliability issues. After a Stage 1 upgrade, I鈥檓 basically at the same power-to-weight ratio as my previous Dodge Charger Daytona with the Hemi, except now I get 30 mpg instead of 17!
