VW, Audi Recall 334,000 Vehicles In N. America Due To Fuel Leaks
DETROIT, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Volkswagen AG is recalling about 334,000 Volkswagen and Audi brand vehicles in the United States and Canada in three separate recalls, each due to fuel leaks but with different causes, U.S. VW said on Friday. No one has been injured as a result of these issues, Volkswagen spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said on Friday. While the fuel leaks could increase the risk of fire, there have been no fires reported, she said. About 83 percent of the recalled vehicles are registered in the United States. Volkswagen did not immediately say whether the recalls will affect vehicles outside of North America. The company did not say how much it expects the recalls to cost. VW said it will notify affected vehicle owners instructing them when parts will be available for them to go to VW and Audi dealerships for repairs free of charge. In the meantime, VW said it will send out interim notifications to affected consumers in November.

However, the basic block and crankshaft remained stock. After all the changes were dialed in, the engine achieved an output of 600 horsepower at 8,500 rpm. The headquarters of THR is in Ventura, Calif. To run at high speeds on the salt, the Bonneville Jetta had other changes. For example, the team lowered the suspension and fit unique Salt Flat wheels and tires at the corners. Finally, the prep team installed a limited slip differential for better traction. The interior was stripped and outfitted with full track safety equipment. The list of safety equipment included a roll cage, racing seat, and a fire suppression system. Also, to help slow the car down, the Bonneville Jetta was fitted with a pair of parachutes. Behind the wheel was Scott Goetz, a veteran Salt Flats racer, who was enthusiastic. 鈥淚t was a terrific experience to drive this car on the salt. The car inspired a lot of confidence at very high speeds.
I played the saxophone in middle school, spending five years of my life huffing and puffing on the horn, learning to read music, and generally annoying the neighbors with practice in the backyard. One thing I learned, though, was that it鈥檚 far easier to play music fast than it is to play slow. And the same idea is true with cars. It鈥檚 easy to drive fast - to dive through corners and clash through the gears. You just smash the gas and go. But driving slow takes patience and concentration, modulating the muscle movements in your leg. Volkswagen has taken the slow-lane idea and applied it to a drag race between the Golf GTI, up! GTI, and Polo GTI. The challenge is to see who can drive the slowest to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour). The drivers cannot slow down or maintain speed. They must continuously accelerate up to speed but do it as slow as possible, which sounds impossible. A slight blip of the throttle would quicken any of the three GTI models slow-lane sprint to 62 mph. The three start out slow, the drivers trying desperately to accelerate slowly. However, the Golf GTI takes off, leaving behind the Polo and up! You can see as the driver鈥檚 try to do their best to accelerate slowly, but someone does have to lose, and it鈥檚 the Golf GTI that鈥檚 first to reach 62 mph. Next to reach the speed is the up! GTI, leaving the Polo GTI to win. It took the Polo 2:57:05 to reach 62 mph, which feels agonizingly slow considering the car has an advertised 0-62 mph time of 6.7 seconds. Not every race has to be about speed. Sometimes slow and steady does win the race, like the Polo GTI - or the Hare. It鈥檚 doubtful this will become a national pastime, soon. It takes skill to drive slow like this, but it鈥檚 not exciting to watch.
Car aficionados of a certain age certainly do. In the mid-1970s, it replaced the beloved Beetle, an event not everyone welcomed. But American drivers soon discovered the Rabbit was a vast improvement 鈥?faster, smoother, quieter, safer and more efficiently laid out. For 2019, the Rabbit has hopped back into VW鈥檚 mix of models after a 10-year hiatus. It鈥檚 a limited-edition subcompact sedan based on the VW Golf GTI, with a number of flourishes. These include special badging, plaid upholstery, interior ambient lighting, a black rear spoiler and exterior colors unavailable on other Golf models. Only 3,000 will be sold in the United States. Since it鈥檚 a Golf GTI at heart, the Rabbit has a bigger, more powerful engine than the standard Golf. Rated at 228 horsepower, the 2.0-liter inline turbocharged Four almost defies comparison with the 1.4-liter turbo Four that powers other Golf models. While much more invigorating to drive, the GTI gives up at least five miles per gallon to the standard Golf. It鈥檚 rated at 24 mpg city, 32 highway, compared with 29/37 in the Golf SE we test-drove a week before the Rabbit arrived. 5,000 higher than that of the Golf SE.
