This 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI is finished in silver over red cloth and was sold new by Bruns Volkswagen in Madison, Wisconsin. The seller acquired the car approximately four years ago has added around 3k of its 90k indicated miles. Power comes from a modified 1.8L inline-four featuring 10.5:1 pistons, larger valves, a Techtonics 288 race camshaft, ARP head studs, and more as described below. A July 2017 service at 89k miles included a timing belt replacement, along with new crankshaft and camshaft seals, spark plugs, and engine and transmission mounts. This Mk1 GTI is now offered with recent service receipts, a Carfax report, owner鈥檚 and repair manuals, and a clean Wisconsin title in the seller鈥檚 name. The seller has provided paint-depth meter photos in the gallery below and notes that a sticker from the original selling dealer remains affixed to the rear hatch on. The included Carfax report lists an accident with minor damage in March 1996, though no further information listed.

The seller mentions that the rear bumper alignment is slightly off, possibly a result of the accident. A number of dents are present on the roof and forward edge of the hood, and the seller reports surface rust around the hood dent as well as in a few other areas such as the bumper mounting points. This example is not equipped with a sunroof. 14鈥?alloy wheels were standard on US-spec 1983-1984 GTIs, and here show curb marks and wear Toyo Extensa A/S tires with 2014 date codes. The cabin is trimmed in red cloth with color matched carpets and door panels. A period Kenwood AM/FM cassette player is installed. GTI-specific equipment includes a 4-spoke steering wheel, golf ball-style shift knob, and auxiliary instrumentation forward of the shifter. A short-throw shifter is equipped. The 6-digit odometer indicates approximately 90k miles. The 1.8L inline-four is said to be based on a 1987 RD block and a 1983-1984 GTI head. A cold-start video is shown above. 3,124 service including a new timing belt/tensioner, various new seals, spark plugs, a new K member, clutch cable, and a new engine mount. The invoice is shown in the gallery, and the seller states that the engine oil was changed in preparation for the sale.

Unfortunately, the photo was grainy, and there was only one image. To supplement that, we've got additional spy shots of a somewhat more covered prototype, but in high-resolution and from pretty much all angles. They show the car to be evolutionary, but generally lower, wider and sleeker. And despite the camouflage, we can actually make out a few details not noticeable in the older photo. At the front, the fascia appears to be lower, and that look is emphasized by how the top of the headlights align with the top of the grille, leaving most of the lights to dip below. The grille itself is even thinner than before, too. The headlights still wrap around the front fascia, but they now have more curves along the bottom edges and little extensions like winglets that come off the trailing edge of the lights. Moving along the car, we can see that the windshield isn't nearly as upright, giving the Mk. 8 Golf a sleeker overall look. The mirror posts have moved from the corner of the window down onto the sheetmetal of the door. The C-pillar leans farther forward now, and the window line and hatch follow suit, furthering the sleek look of the new car. The character lines along the car's flanks now extend all the way to the taillights that also feature more shape in the form of little drop-down sections. We expect to see the new Golf make its debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. It will likely be on the latest iteration of the MQB platform, with the electric Golf using a version of the new MEB platform that will be used on the I.D. Regular Golfs will likely come with a version of the 1.5-liter gas engine available in current European models. The GTI will probably still use a 2.0-liter engine, but bumped up to around 250 horsepower, and the Golf R could see as much as 350 ponies under the hood.
