Available in two- and four-door body styles, the Golf hatch is offered with two engines. The first is a 2.5-liter five-cylinder that produces 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission with hill-hold assist is standard, while a six-speed automatic is optional. Automatic hatches equipped with the gasoline engine achieve an EPA-rated 24/31 mpg city/highway, while the manual improves on the highway to 23/33 mpg. Looking at the bigger picture though, the Golf doesn鈥檛 excel in fuel economy, as the automatic Ford Focus achieves a much better 27/38 mpg. That doesn鈥檛 apply to models equipped with the 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4, which is paired to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automated manual (DSG). With 140 hp and a hefty 236 lb-ft of torque on tap, TDI models achieve an EPA-rated 30/42 mpg, allowing drivers to not fill up as much. For those who prefer performance over efficiency, the Golf R pumps up the volume with a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo-four that bumps power up to 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. That鈥檚 not all, though, as the R also adds all-wheel drive, larger brakes, and a firmer suspension for a sportier feel. 30,000 mark, the high price is hard to justify for a hot hatch. With the next-gen Golf on the horizon, Volkswagen kept it simple for 2013, adding a standard front-center armrest and floor mats in the front and back. Convenience trims get a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake.

Broadly speaking, millennials鈥?stagnant wages and standard of living has put downward pressure on car prices, especially vintage vehicles that cross multiple generations of owners. VanDerBrink agrees that the collectible value of American cars in particular are falling among young people. The good news, at least for her, is that a whole different subset of cars has sparked a millennial romance: Imports. 鈥淎 鈥?7 Honda Accord is something that a lot of people seek out now, because you buy what you鈥檙e familiar with,鈥?she notes. But the image of the big-time collector, with multiple valuable cars sitting in a garage or a barn, is becoming rarer and rarer, she says. That includes men like Mike Cascio, 68, who admits that he鈥檚 got more than 20 vintage MG cars from Britain at any given time. 550. Over the decades, he has bought and sold dozens of cars, even building a two-story garage near his home on the outskirts of Milwaukee. 鈥淢y friends and family probably questioned my sanity,鈥?he says with a giggle.

But he views his style of collecting as decidedly generational, and expects that his own children will sell the collection off when he鈥檚 no longer around (鈥淭hough I hope they鈥檒l keep one or two鈥?. He says the community around these pioneering 20th-century cars has faded in his lifetime, especially with young people struggling to gain high-paying jobs with stability. 鈥淚t makes me think of the music industry,鈥?says Cascio, who is a musician and music-store owner. 鈥淏ack in the day, it was all about the great guitar heroes. The world is apparently burning, but our love of cars lingers, even despite some reforms in what and how young people buy. Experts I spoke to say we鈥檙e probably witnessing the last generation of people who will carry the torch for muscle cars and stripped-down vintage roadsters, and the realization is bittersweet for all involved. 鈥淧eople still love a car. I sold a little Civic for six grand recently, and it was a POS, honestly. But it鈥檚 an iconic car for that period, which young people get,鈥?she argues. 鈥淲hen a person gets their first car, that feeling of freedom is huge. Cars will always be collectible.
