Volkswagen E-Golf Review

Volkswagen E-Golf Review

The e-Golf differs from other electric cars that have been designed from the ground up - such as the i3, Leaf or ZOE - because it鈥檚 an electric variant of an existing model. Instead of an engine under the bonnet, there鈥檚 a 134bhp electric motor driving the front wheels, while a 35.8kWh battery sits under the floor in the boot. Otherwise, the e-Golf is an almost identical proposition to the rest of the line-up. Indeed, one of the most appealing aspects of e-Golf ownership is that it looks much like any other Golf on the road. Only car spotters are likely to notice the blanked-off grille (there鈥檚 no need for a radiator to cool the engine) and the unique aerodynamic alloy-wheel design of the electric model. It also comes with blue styling accents and blue-backed VW logo at both ends to denote its electric status. Charging can be taken care of using a domestic supply with a full charge from empty taking 11 hours using a wall box at home. However, most owners will only be topping up a partially used battery overnight, so returning to maximum charge will be much quicker than that. Use one of the ever-growing network of DC rapid chargers and you can get back to 80% capacity in 45 minutes, or be fully charged in one hour.

When the eighth-generation 2020 Volkswagen Golf goes on sale, the German brand plans to electrify the staple model in its lineup. On Thursday, VW announced the next Golf will introduce 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. It will be the first time for 48-volt technology in the Golf, though not the first electrified Golf. That honor goes to the electric eGolf, which arrived for 2015. Specifically meant for Europe, the hatchback will couple the mild-hybrid system with either the 1.0-liter inline-3 or the 1.5-liter inline-4 for improved fuel efficiency. VW does not currently offer either of these engines in the States. Instead, the current model features a 1.4-liter turbo-4. It's likely neither will come to the U.S. We may not even see the 2020 Golf at all after rumors swirled VW will drop the model from the U.S. However, the hotter Golf GTI and R variants will stick around, should the rumor prove true.
