Autobytel鈥檚 Joni Gray bought a Nissan Leaf about three years ago, when it was one of the only options for an affordable, fully electric passenger car. The number of electric cars on the road continues to grow, though, so potential buyers actually have to do some comparison shopping. Two of the latest to market are the FIAT 500e and the Volkswagen e-Golf, and Joni, as the resident electric car expert, took both for a spin. These cars are both fully electric, zero emission compact hatchbacks with relatively low (for the category) entry prices. The 2015 FIAT 500e boasts a range of 87 miles and is rated for an average of 122 MPGe. It鈥檚 got 111 horsepower thanks to a 83 kW electric motor and 24 kW lithium-ion battery. The 2015 VW e-Golf is based on the seventh generation Golf platform, which is all new for this model year. The e-Golf offers an 83-mile range and an average of 116 MPGe. The 2019 Volkswagen Golf. There's a rumor going around that when the next Volkswagen Golf arrives in the United States, it might be minus the base Golf itself. Word is that VW would import the new Golf R and GTI performance models, but not the economy sedan those cars are based on. Andrew Krok at CNET's Roadshow got a VW spokesperson to confirm---on the record---that the next-gen Golf R and GTI are confirmed for North America, but that "other Golf models are under consideration". Less than stellar sales. And that's a shame, because a week in the 2019 Volkswagen Golf was a great reminder of what a really terrific car it is. An evolution of the revolutionary Golf/Rabbit that hit these shores 44 years ago to (eventually) replace the original VW Beetle, the Golf still manages to deliver efficient people packaging, fuel economy and driving fun in one reasonably-priced car. 21,845. Let's hope VW gives them another shot with the next Golf here in America.
