Student, 20, Who Ignored Judge's Driving Ban Is Arrested
A student who drove away from court minutes after being banned from the road by a judge for a crash which left a woman badly injured has now been rearrested and his vehicle seized. Saif Shaikh, 20, was pictured getting into his Volkswagen Golf GTI following a hearing at Manchester Crown Court yesterday, which saw him plead guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Journalists informed Greater Manchester Police who rushed to find him. The GMP Traffic account confirmed yesterday afternoon that Shaikh had been arrested and was being held in custody. The tweet read: 'We've worked hard today and this man is now in custody awaiting interview. The bizarre scenes yesterday began when Shaikh鈥檚 case was adjourned for a report to be prepared ahead of sentencing. Judge Timothy Smith told Shaikh that he was banned from driving before that hearing, and he nodded before leaving court. But then the Manchester Metropolitan University student ignored the order, and was seen walking to his car - parked around 50 yards away from the court on Bridge Street - before driving away. He was driving the same black Golf when he crashed into the woman on Upper Brook Street on November 18 last year. The court heard the woman was visiting her son, who is in permanent care at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Share At the plea and trial preparation hearing, Shaikh鈥檚 lawyer asked the judge to postpone sentencing until he had finished his first-year exams.
