The 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI now comes standard with a rearview camera. One engine is available in the 2016 GTI: a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 rated at 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the Performance package, the engine is rated at 220 hp. A six-speed manual or twin-clutch automatic transmission is offered in the GTI. Fuel economy is excellent for a hot hatch at 25/34 mpg city/highway with the manual and 25/33 mpg with the automatic. Behind the split-folding rear seats, there鈥檚 22.8 cubic feet of cargo space that can be expanded to 52.7 cubic feet. Standard safety features include dual front, front-side, and side curtain airbags. The Driver Assistance package adds more safety aids including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. In the base S trim, standard features include plaid-patterned cloth upholstery, heated front seats, an infotainment system with a 5.8-inch touchscreen, a drive mode selector, LED fog lights, Bluetooth connectivity, 18-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, and ambient lighting.

Moving up to the SE trim adds a panoramic sunroof, automatic headlights, a Fender premium audio system, rain-sensing wipers, and leather upholstery. The range-topping Autobahn trim adds navigation, a 12-way power driver鈥檚 seat, and dual-zone climate control, in addition to the standard features included in the S and SE trims. The Performance Packages ups horsepower by 10 and comes with the VAQ differential and larger brakes. Opting for the Lighting package adds adaptive HID headlights with LED accents. Considered the benchmark hot hatch, the Golf GTI remains an exceptional machine, offering an impeccable balance of performance, handling, and refinement in a practical package. In a comparison test that also included the Subaru WRX, Mini Cooper S, and Honda Civic Si, the GTI won because it felt at home on and off the track. We noted that the car鈥檚 ride and steering was deemed the best of the four while its level of refinement and build quality surpasses that of its competition. We also noted in a 2015 First Test review that due to the sporty nature of the GTI, its ride is a little rougher than the conventional Golf while the cabin is a tiny bit noisier. Build quality, on the other hand, is a strong point because it鈥檚 even better than the previous generation GTI, which already had a solid cabin filled with high-grade materials.

And in part it shows GM鈥檚 interest in autonomous and electric vehicles, areas where the company will continue to invest. But mostly, it鈥檚 a response to Americans鈥?burgeoning love for pick-ups and SUVs. Cruze deliveries in the most recent quarter were down more than 25 percent compared with the same quarter last year, while deliveries of the Chevy Malibu had fallen by more than 45 percent. By comparison, the hulking Suburban and Tahoe saw their deliveries go up more than 10 percent and 20 percent respectively. But it鈥檚 an industrywide trend: Ford announced this spring it was all but giving up on cars. Since 2014, the sales trajectories of cars and trucks have rapidly diverged. Lightweight trucks and SUVs now outsell cars by a two-to-one margin. This shift has had a number of consequences. The proliferation of higher, heavier vehicles (which many drivers believe make them safer, in part because they want to see over the big cars around them) has been correlated with a rising pedestrian death toll. Collisions with the higher bumpers of SUVs tend to be fatal at two to three times the rate of cars.

It is also probably responsible for the country鈥檚 stalled fuel efficiency gains. Among 2016 models, according to the EPA, trucks emitted 25 percent more CO2 on average than cars. Things might have been different. Ten years ago, Wired proclaimed the death of the SUV, done in by the recession and high gas prices. Auto companies were repositioning toward cars, and the Camry, Corolla, Civic, and Accord were outselling the Ford F-150. GM stopped making Hummers in 2010. But as gas prices fell and the economy recovered, Congress never took the opportunity to finally raise the gas tax. Gas got very, very cheap; infrastructure went unfunded; Americans found renewed appeal in bigger and bigger vehicles. It鈥檚 not all bad news: For now, automakers remain bound by ambitious Obama-era fuel efficiency goals. Trucks and SUVs have gotten a lot cleaner. The fastest-growing segment of the market is for 鈥減etite SUVs鈥?like the Honda HR-V or Nissan Rogue Sport, whose fuel economy tends to be closer to that of cars than to their cousins the Yukon and the Suburban. Still, it didn鈥檛 have to turn out this way. The average American auto lasts for nearly 12 years, which means that consumer choices now are locking us into a relatively gas-dependent paradigm for years to come. Low gas prices sent more Americans into SUVs; SUV drivers will be that much more averse to properly taxing fuel consumption to account for its environmental harms. Every day a higher gas tax looks like a better idea, and a more elusive one.

The 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been refreshed with an updated exterior design, a new multimedia system with a larger touchscreen, and more power on the base trim. The high-performance Golf R also gets new standard features including Volkswagen鈥檚 Digital Cockpit and an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic replacing the six-speed unit. The 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI is the performance-focused variant of the Golf hatchback and slots above the less potent standard model. In addition to the front-drive GTI, the Golf R model has more power and comes standard with all-wheel drive. The 2018 Golf GTI鈥檚 2.0-liter turbo-four is rated at 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and can be paired to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic. A 2.0-liter turbo-four also powers the 2018 Golf R but is rated at 292 hp and 280 lb-ft. Transmission choices for the Golf R include a standard six-speed manual or a new-to-the-model seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The EPA hasn鈥檛 rated the 2018 Golf GTI for fuel economy yet but the 2017 model was rated at 24/34 mpg city/highway with the manual and 24/32 mpg with the automatic. The more powerful Golf R is rated at 21/29 mpg with the manual and 22/29 mpg with the automatic. The Golf R comes standard with features like Volkswagen鈥檚 Digital Cockpit, full LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry/start, heated front seats, a 12-way power driver鈥檚 seat, and leather upholstery. The NHTSA gave the 2018 Golf GTI and Golf R a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars). The IIHS has yet to test the 2018 Golf GTI but a 2017 model received a Good score on all crashworthiness tests and a Poor score on the headlights test (Good is the highest possible score). On the SE trim and higher, the Golf GTI comes standard with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control is only available on the range-topping Autobahn trim where it comes standard. The Driver Assistance package on the Autobahn trim adds lane keeping assist, automatic park assist, and high beam assist.

The Golf R is also available with the same active safety features as the GTI but they鈥檙e exclusive to models equipped with Dynamic Chassis Control and navigation where they come standard. Although we haven鈥檛 tested the 2018 Golf GTI, we have reviewed the pre-refresh model. In a 2014 comparison test that also included the Mini Hardtop Cooper S, Subaru WRX, and the previous generation Honda Civic Si, the Volkswagen Golf GTI won thanks to its blend of daily drivability and performance. At the track, the Golf GTI proved to be an excellent companion thanks to its sporty chassis and a stability control system that wasn鈥檛 very intrusive. Despite its excellent handling, the Golf GTI doesn鈥檛 have a rough ride and is surprisingly comfortable as a daily driver. Overall, the car feels more expensive than it actually is. The more powerful Golf R won a 2015 comparison test against the WRX STI because that pre-refresh model takes the GTI formula up a notch but doesn鈥檛 come at the cost of daily drivability. At the track, however, the Golf R understeers too much when pushed to its limit. Out on public roads, the Golf R shined because it felt composed and stable thanks to its solid chassis.

The Polo GTI can also be identified by typical GTI characteristics at the rear. Black is also a stylistic element here; a trait that has carried over from the first Golf GTI of 1976 to the new era. The 2018 version has an enlarged, two-piece roof spoiler of the new Polo GTI that is painted in black (high-gloss on top; underside in black matt). Other GTI characteristics at the rear include a high-gloss black diffuser and the chrome dual tailpipes of the exhaust system integrated on the left-hand side. Located in a direct line above the tailpipes is the GTI signature on the boot lid. Another standard feature of the Polo GTI is its LED tail light clusters that provide for a very distinctive light signature at night. At the heart of every GTI, and therefore of the new Polo GTI, there is the engine. In recent times the GTI has always been powered by high torque turbocharged engines. In the case of the new Polo GTI, it is a two-litre direct-injection petrol engine with an output of 147kW/320Nm. Like the Golf GTI, the new Polo GTI will be represented in the 2.0-litre turbo class for the first time.

The new Polo GTI engine launches with a 6-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) as standard. The Polo GTI with DSG accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. Today's most powerful Polo reaches a top speed of 237km/h. Despite its power output, the Polo GTI can be driven very economically thanks to its efficient drive technology. The combined fuel consumption of the DSG version is 5.9 litres/100km. The Polo GTI is offered with two different running gear configurations. It is based on a sport suspension; while the optional 'Sport Select' suspension with active dampers is available as an option. Like all Polo models, the GTI is also equipped with electromechanical power steering and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Also on-board is the XDS differential lock, which further refines traction when cornering quickly. The 147kW Polo, which like all GTI cars features front-wheel drive, has coil spring struts and lower wishbones with a track-stabilising scrub radius. The front running gear additionally features an anti-roll bar. The front suspension consists of coil springs with telescopic gas-filled dampers; the elements are integrated in the spring struts.

With a 2018 refresh, the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI will not likely see any major changes. The GTI is the affordable performance variant of the Golf family that also consists of the regular Golf hatchback, the SportWagen and Alltrack SUV-like variant, the e-Golf EV, and the high-performance Golf-R. The 2019 Golf R will likely pack the same 2.0-liter turbo-four engine found in the 2018 model and all-wheel drive will be standard. The 2018 Golf R offers a feature that monitors performance stats, 19-inch alloy wheels, a Fender audio system, blue accents gauges, dual exhaust with quad tips, R grille and bumpers, and sport seats with an embroidered R logo. The GTI鈥檚 220-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four and the Golf R鈥檚 292-hp turbo-four should carry over into the 2019 model year. A six-speed manual and six-speed dual-clutch automatic are offered on the GTI (the Golf R offers a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual clutch) should continue. EPA-rated fuel economy for the front-drive 2018 GTI is 25/33 mpg city/highway with the manual and 24/32 mpg with the automatic. The all-wheel-drive Golf R is rated at 21/29 mpg with the manual and 22/29 mpg with the automatic transmission. The 2018 GTI鈥檚 standard multimedia touchscreen is 6.5 inches and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the upgraded screen is 8.0 inches and adds SiriusXM satellite radio and a navigation system. A nine-speaker Fender audio system is optional. The Golf R鈥檚 multimedia system includes all of the GTI鈥檚 features but makes the Fender audio system standard. We concluded a First Test review on the GTI by saying the hot hatch is worth considering, especially in the more moderately equipped and affordable SE trim. 鈥淭he Golf GTI is a well-rounded package, a multitalented hot hatch that鈥檚 fun to drive yet practical,鈥?we concluded.

For 2017, the Volkswagen Golf GTI adds a new Sport trim with the Performance package as standard. Autobahn and SE trims now come standard with the Performance package while the two-door variant is now exclusive only to the S grade. The Driver Assistance package now comes with Light Assist and has been made available across all Golf GTI trim levels. Range-topping Autobahn models receive more standard features such as HID headlights, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot warning as standard. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbo-four that makes 210 to 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is the standard transmission while a six-speed twin-clutch automatic is optional. Should you want even more power than the GTI, Volkswagen also offers the all-wheel-drive Golf R, which uses a 2.0-liter turbo-four tuned for 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The Golf R is also offered with a six-speed manual or twin-clutch automatic. Golf GTI fuel economy (for the 2016 model year) is EPA-rated at 25/34 mpg city/highway with the manual and 25/33 mpg with the automatic.

The more powerful Golf R is rated at 22/31 mpg with the manual and 23/30 mpg with the automatic. Thanks to the hatchback body style, the Golf GTI is also practical with plenty of room for four passengers. Should you need to haul gear, the GTI has 22.8 cubic feet of space behind the split folding rear seats that can be expanded to 52.7 cubic feet. Volkswagen added its Discover Media infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen across the Golf lineup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Navigation is available only on the range-topping Autobahn trim for the Golf GTI and on the Golf R鈥檚 DCC w/Nav grade. Like the standard Golf hatchback, the Golf GTI received a five-star overall crash safety score from NHTSA (out of a possible five stars). The Volkswagen Golf GTI continues to offer an excellent blend of driving enjoyment and practicality wrapped in a package that feels more expensive than it actually is.

We gave the Golf GTI the win in a four-car comparison test that also included the previous generation Honda Civic Si, Mini Hardtop Cooper S and Subaru Impreza WRX because of its combination of speed, agility, refinement and affordability. However, we did note in a 2015 First Test that the optional dual-clutch automatic is no longer quicker than the manual and while the electronic nannies are less intrusive, they鈥檙e still non-defeatable in the Golf GTI. Stepping up to the Golf R takes the Golf GTI formula and amplifies it a bit by giving it all-wheel drive, more power, and even better handling without sacrificing refinement. In a 2015 Golf R First Test, we noted that the Golf is even more potent with plenty of power on tap and handling chops that rival serious sports cars like the Ford Mustang GT. Braking performance, however, wasn鈥檛 as good as expected with the car taking 108 feet to stop from 60 mph, which is longer than the less powerful GTI. In a comparison test against the Subaru WRX STI, the Golf R took the win thanks mainly because it offers world class performance alongside exceptional levels of refinement.

There are a few cars that I am reluctant to return after a week of test driving and the latest Renault Clio RS is one of them. Sporty cars and motor sport are in Renault's DNA, from the Gordini/ Alpine and 16TS models of the 1960s and 70s, to today's crop, Renault still has what it takes to satisfy drivers looking for a performance edge. The Clio RS fits that bill perfectly. The new car is slightly larger than before, and there's a good deal of space for four occupants. Its powered by a one point six litre turbo charged engine producing147kw and 240 nm. With a proud history of making championship winning engines in Formula 1, that know how is on full display in the Clio. Renault so keen to show off the RS powerplant that it's deleted the obligatory plastic cover for the motor, choosing instead to leave all the mechanical gubbins in full view, and there's a lot in there to take in! Pleasingly, there's a gas strut to hold up the bonnet..
