We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

In no particular order, here are the top 25 people that have created or changed the Volkswagen industry as we now know it. 1. Gene Berg: Berg was one of the founding fathers of the high-performance VW industry. He was committed to excellence in his products, a tradition that is carried on today by the company he founded. 2. Joe Vittone: From such humble beginnings as making a replaceable valve guide for a 36 hp head, grew one of the industry giants. The name Empi will always be remembered for their dedication to quality high-performance VW parts. 3. Claude Tomlinson: Since 1956, when he was working on VWs in a barn, Claude Tomlinson started Claude's Buggies, which has metamorphosed into C.B. Performance, one of the leading VW restoration and high-performance shops in the United States. 4. Tom Lieb: From being a VW hot rodder to the founder and President of Scat Enterprises, Tom Lieb has seen some amazing changes in the industry in his almost 40-year career.

6. Ferdinand Porsche: Without him and his design studio, as well as his vision for a small car for the people, none of this would have been possible. 7. Steve Wood: Wood is one of the premiere names in vintage VW restoration. 9. Ben Pon: An automobile importer, Pon first introduced the VW to the American market in 1949. As well, he is considered to be the father of the Type II because of his initial interest and imput into the project. 10. Dean Lowry: Owner of Deano Dyno-Soars, Lowry was a high-performance pioneer and could be seen at Southern California tracks proving that the little aircooled engines have racing potential. 11. "Dyno" Don Chamberlin: Still going strong after all these years, Dyno Don's howling voice was a mainstay as the emcee at the Bug-Ins and many other West Coast events. 12. Charles Radclyffe: As the British commander of the factory after the war, Colonel Radclyff first realized the potential of Ben Pon's Bus design.

13. Ivan Hirst: Heralded as the savior of the Volkswagen, Hirst believed in the Beetle when no one else did by cleaning up the Wolfsburg factory after World War II and producing Volkswagens under the British control. 14. Heinrich Nordhoff: Responsible for the phenominal success of the Volkswagen, Nordhoff took over the plant from the British in 1948 and elevated production and exportation to new levels. 15. Adolf Hitler: Born out of sinister intentions, the Beetle was Hitler's propaganda for helping create unity in pre-war Germany. His influence pushed the project through to production. 16. Al Martinez: He was an early VW event promoter with sponsorship of the car show portion of the California Bug-Ins which continued with the VW Jamboree events. In addition, Al Martinez Body Shop was one of the largest source for the early custom Volkswagens. 17. Richard Kimball: He was the one of the first and longest VW event promoters, parlaying his organizational skills during the early Bug-Ins into one of the largest Volkswagen events in the world, the VW Classic.

19. Peter Koller: Koller spent the better part of 1936-'37 designing what would be known as Wolfsburg, the factory and the surrounding town. Being a devout Christian, he included plans for two churches, but they were deleted by Hitler. 20. Bill Collins: Starting the club Der Kafer Fahren for year '57 and earlier VW owners, Collins has inspirered the industry to drive and enjoy their VWs instead of trailering them. 21. Dan Gurney: Driving the original EMPI sedan for Economotors, Gurney proved success is possible for stock motors with a few upgrades at the 1963 Bahama VW Grand Prix in Nassau. 22. Bruce Meyers: Meyers is the off-road pioneer responsible for creating the off-road industry as we know it today. By building the Meyers Manx and winning the Baja 500, he changed the face of off-road competition. 23. Bob Scott: Well before his time, Scott was the founder of Vintage Parts, the first all-vintage parts supply house in the United States. 24. Doyle Dane Bernbrach: Though a small ad agency and not a single person, this small creative group sold an unconventional car to a conventional society. 25. Franz Reimspeiss: Not only is he responsible for creating the time-honored VW logo, but after 20 experimental engines were designed, built and tested, he finally designed an aircooled, four-stroke engine that was cheaper than their original plans.

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

The Tiguan pledged Volkswagen's R-Line fraternity way back in 2008, survived the hazing and humiliation to become a certified member of the ancient German trim-package society (by "ancient," we mean 10 years old). The 2014 Tiguan R-Line is the scion of that first-generation compact crossover and joins the Touareg, Beetle and CC in the brotherhood. Driving Notes- On the outside, beyond the badging, R-Line spotters will take note of body-color side skirts, black wheel arch extensions, a roof spoiler, HID headlamps and power folding side mirrors. R-Line interior extras include leather seating surfaces and power front seats along with a flat-bottomed, leather-wrapped steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and aluminum sill plates. The interior is a premium VW affair with leather that exudes all the right vibes and everything else feeling soft to the touch. The choice materials and two-tone instrument panel overcome the minimalism of the center console and the huge sunroof keeping the cabin bright. A very nice Fender audio system is standard, and so is a trial of Volkswagen's new Car-Net connected services suite (the People's Car version of OnStar).

VW charges the Tiguan with "putting the 'Sport' in SUV," crediting it with having the soul of the GTI (but not the same heart), and we didn't scoff at the bombast after a couple of hours behind the wheel. Yet we almost never touched the paddles. That 207 lb-ft of warthog grunt comes on from 1,700 rpm, same as the 200 hp, and the six-speed transmission didn't need help knowing where to be in the rev range when called to attention. For 2014, there are five Tiguan trims, with a healthy price climb from bottom to top. 39,625 with the addition of four Monster Mats, a trunk liner and a first aid kit. That's more money than a base Audi Q5 with the same engine. 7,000 more than a Mazda CX-5 - the first two of those being among the eight vehicles VW lists in the Tiguan's competitive set. All of them have more headroom, legroom and cargo space than the Volkswagen. They are also all down on power compared to the Tiguan, in some cases quite a bit down, and only the Mazda can come close to the driving experience. But the competitors (in four-cylinder guise) do get better gas mileage on less-costly regular fuel. 32,670. It will take more than that to explain the huge disparity in sales between the Tiguan and its competitors, of course. The Tiguan - any Tiguan, but especially the R-line - strikes us as a lifestyle choice in a segment guarded by the twin sentinels of Practicality and Value, those watchmen ready to disembowel the sales of non-conforming competition. The Jetta has sold in five-digit quantities every month since that happened, something that could not be said of it before. In fact, its sales are still climbing two years after it hit the market.

They are available in three versions: as halogen headlights, bi-xenon headlights and for the first time in the world as bi-xenon headlights with Dynamic Light Assist (continuous main beam). Beneath the middle section of the bumper that is painted in body colour are the lower air intakes. In the case of the Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid and Touareg V8 TDI, the middle intake is styled with chrome fins and another U-shaped frame. Located in the bumper's lowermost segment are the front fog lights and the radar sensors of the optional adaptive cruise control system (ACC plus Front Assist). Thanks to the lower body height, short overhangs, a dynamic line of side windows and the clear sculpting of its surfaces, in contrast to other SUVs this car's side profile does not in the least have a massive appearance. Just the opposite is the case: Just like on a sports car, the car body tapers slightly in the area of the doors. This results in a partial channelling between the A and C pillars, which captures light and lends a muscular, athletic image to the entire side section.

This character is reinforced by the precise edges of the wheel arches and the rear side section. The side window look that narrows toward the rear corresponds to the rear shoulder section that is prominently sculpted. Also serving as clear SUV characteristics are the rugged wheel arches with their black trim extending toward the wheel wells. Just as beautiful in form as they are practical are the outside mirrors with integrated indicator lights and the door handles that open in the pulling direction and are therefore crash optimised. Even from the rear, the new VW Touareg is immediately recognisable, even without its signature. The reason: Designers took the look of the first Volkswagen Touareg and intentionally developed it further without ignoring the previous model. In this process, Volkswagen styling avoids short-lived effects and is based on a continuous evolution. A strategy, which for example has accompanied the sensational success of the Golf right up to today and makes it simply "inimitable".

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

The Microbus-inspired Bulli concept will be part of a subfamily of more distinctive VW's that will include the new Beetle, out next June, and the baby Up! These new cars will be more youthful and have more of a sports feel and visual character, but without losing the core functionality of the brand. What makes it hot? The all-electric Bulli has a range of 186 miles on its 40-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack is sandwiched in the floor of the van and could be recharged in less than an hour, according to VW, at an "electric refueling station" designed for electric vehicles. Unlike the original Microbus, the concept's electric motor is positioned in front of the vehicle and drives the front wheels. The 114-horsepower motor delivers 199 lb-ft of torque. VW says the concept would run from zero to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 87 mph. VW has long struggled to invest its models with the emotional character of the original Beetle. The Bulli concept signals the start of a campaign to reinvigorate this critical strand of the Volkswagen DNA. Only time will tell. When and how much? Yet to be determined. A generation of baby boomers with fond memories of the old VW Microbus will undoubtedly say, "Build it and we will buy it." And the fact that it is electric should have cross-generational appeal with similarly minded eco-conscious youngsters. Not a bad combination.

The most immediately noticeable change are headlamp clusters that get a subtle reshaping to go along with a wider grille and reworked lower front fascia. At the rear, the taillamps retain the same shape, but the reflectors are redesigned with some of the light-pipe styling found in other recent Bimmers. The 3 Series coupe will now be offered with xDrive all-wheel drive, while the 3 Series convertible gets a new solar reflective leather upholstery that BMW claims helps keep seat temperatures down when the lid is open. The most significant updates come underhood, where the much lauded twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is being replaced by a new single turbo version. The revised engine, dubbed N55, has recently been launched in the 740i and the 535i Gran Turismo. The twin scroll turbo has dual exhaust inlets that allow the engineers to better balance the pulses coming in to spin up the turbine faster. This is expected to reduce the turbo lag that some drivers complained about with the outgoing twin turbo setup. BMW also claims it has reduced cold-start emissions by routing all the exhaust gases through a single, larger catalytic converter that heats up faster.

On the intake side, the throttle is eliminated thanks to the addition of BMW's Valvetronic variable valve control system. The N55 also gets direct fuel injection. The end result is the same 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque as before, but with a fatter torque curve that maintains its peak from 1,200-5,000 rpm. The new design of the taillights is unique to the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. The rear light cluster feature two-piece L-shapes and are further accentuated by a new color scheme. With two rows of light tubes that illuminate simultaneously, they create a night design with depth and dimension. Integrated flush into the body of the car, the lights are split into two sections and extend up the trunk lid, blending with the character lines from the side profile. Though the updated BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible will go on sale this Spring, pricing and fuel economy figures haven't been announced as of yet. 52,075 for the 335i Convertible. The latter is expected to be a small improvement in fuel economy for the new single-turbo engine over the current twin-turbo engine's 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

Wolfsburg/Detroit - The Beetle is a phenomenon, regardless of where it shows up in the world: People are always happy to see this car, whether it's the coupe or the Convertible. With the world premiere of the Beetle Dune at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volkswagen is giving the public the chance to see a Beetle with a cool offroad look. The Dune concept shows the potential for a new production version of the sportiest Beetle ever. The concept is painted in 'Arizona', a yellow-orange metallic, with two-part wheelarch extensions that are offset in black. Like the Cross Golf, these extensions are rugged looking elements with a matte finish. There's one subtle difference here, though: integrated on top of the main matte parts are 0.06-inch-thick gloss black 'blades' that appear to hover above the massive wheel housings, because they do not make direct contact. The wheel housings widen the body by 1.1 inches per side to give a total width of 73.4 inches, an increase of 2.2 inches over a stock Beetle.

Overall, the Dune has grown compared with the R-Line model on which it is based. The overall length has increased by 0.5 inches to 168.9 inches and the car is both 2.0 inches higher off the ground and 0.8 inches taller. In keeping with its wider body, the car's front and rear tracks are increased by 1.1 inches at the front and rear to 63.3 and 61.9 inches respectively. As a result of the four-square stance and its reduced wheel travel, the 19-inch wheels and 255/45 tires fill out the wheel housings. Visually, the wheels look similar to the18-inch 'Twister' design with their five aluminum spokes, black-painted inserts, and polished aluminum rims. The VW logo at the center of each wheel is embedded in a three-dimensional housing that's painted in the car's exterior color. The wheelarch extensions transition into brushed aluminum sill trim panels, between which there's a chrome-plated underbody skidplate. The top part of the sills are painted in high-gloss black and above them are side trim strips, again finished in a high-gloss black, that are reminiscent of the original Beetle's running boards. The distinctive Dune logo, meanwhile, is placed in front of the rear fenders.

The bottom of the door mirrors are in black, with the rest of the mirror being vapor-coated in aluminum. The front apron, which has also been redesigned, features a large central air intake, a typical design feature of the Volkswagen Cross models. The intake widens towards its bottom edge, highlighting the front end's sporty look: the black honeycomb screen has a chrome-plated surround that morphs into the underbody protection. To the left and right of the central air intake and the aluminum underbody protection are the foglight housings: trapezoidal in shape, they have gloss black frames and contain innovative LED foglights. Semi-circular, the LED rings have a matte finish, resulting in a uniform light band. Above the rings are three slender cross ribs and a narrow chrome strip that is 0.4-inches high and serves as an LED turn signal. Rear section: The Beetle Dune demonstrates that it is possible to reverse the design maxim 'form follows function'.

This latest iteration of the Beetle would allow someone to escape wintertime by sandboarding in Florence, Oregon or skiing in Aspen, Colorado, depending on your preference. Anywhere skis or snowboards need to be transported, the Dune will happily oblige. The skis are mounted to the outside of the trunk lid. To do this, the outer parts of the rear spoiler swivel; the skis are then placed in the spoiler, then it is closed to clamp them in place. At the top, the skis slide into a receptacle in the specially developed roof spoiler, where they are secured by an 0.8-inch-wide belt. The roof spoiler is painted in high-gloss black, like the entire surface surrounding the transparent panoramic tilt/slide sunroof. The meticulous attention to detail is also reflected in the skis for the concept car, which are painted in shiny black. The Dune signature and Volkswagen logo are offset in matte black. Even with skis mounted, the trunklid can be opened easily at any time.

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

The Volkswagen would need to be capable of carrying a family of five at sustained speeds of 62 miles per hour, with a fuel efficiency of 32 miles per gallon. It would also need to be inexpensive to fix and replace worn-out parts. Ferdinand Porsche developed several prototypes of a model called the 鈥淭ype 60.鈥?Featuring a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine and a distinctive bulbous shape, the prototypes were test-driven for nearly 2 million miles. A factory was built in Fallersleben (later renamed Wolfsburg) to mass produce the cars, with Hitler himself laying the cornerstone in 1938. During World War II, the factory was devoted to producing military transport vehicles. After the war鈥檚 conclusion in 1945, British Army Major Ivan Hirst was tasked with controlling the bombed-out factory. He convinced the British military to order 20,000 cars, and soon the factory was producing 1,000 per month. The Volkswagen came to be known as the 鈥淏eetle鈥?for its rounded appearance.

鈥楨MP2鈥? co-developed between Peugeot and Citroen, might sound like a droid from Star Wars, but it鈥檚 actually carrying the hopes of a new generation of French cars. The 鈥楨fficient Modular Platform鈥?will underpin several family hatchbacks, MPVs and crossovers from the two brands and already sees duty in the Citroen C4 Picasso. The architecture saves 140kg in weight versus the old 308, and crucially for this SW model, it鈥檚 more space-efficient inside too. The dashboard is of course identical to the 308 hatch: it鈥檚 minimalist, touchscreen-centric, and bound to divide opinion with that love/hate-it small-diameter steering wheel. It鈥檚 a high-quality cabin though, and that avant-garde design is a reassuring sign of life from Peugeot鈥檚 beleaguered ranks. Though why they've coined it 'i-Cockpit' is anyone's guess. Engines will be shared with the hatchback, including a 鈥楤lueHDI鈥?turbodiesel variant to compete with the VW Golf Bluemotion and Ford Focus Econetic. It emits 85g/km of CO2 - another class-beating figure for the car - and dodges road tax as a result.

This is Peugeot's all-new family hatchback: the 308. Yep, that's right: Peugeot isn't rolling over to the '309' moniker, but don't be fooled: the new 308's design looks worlds apart from the off-the-pace outgoing car. Sticking with the same model names for all future cars will simplify the range for consumers, reckons Peugeot: it's a demonstration of the fightback to rebuild the brand's image (think Ford ditching the 'Escort' badge and sticking with 'Focus' instead). The new 308 is 140kg lighter than before, more economical and gets a totally rethought cabin. Compared to the lumpy old 308, the new car has smartened up its act, with neater two-piece front grilles and straight-edged side surfacing. The C-shaped taillight clusters are similar to the 208 supermini and 2008 crossover: the 'lion claw' details pay tribute to Peugeot's rampant lion badge. Is the new Peugeot 308 more radical underneath? While the neat but nondescript styling isn't a jaw-dropper, Peugeot has really gone to town underneath.

308 is, on average, 140kg lighter than the outgoing car, thanks to PSA Peugeot-Citroen's new 'EMP2' platform. It's an adaptable architecture that underpins the new Citroen Picasso and will see duty in most of Peugeot-Citroen's future midsized models. Like the VW Group's MQB platform, the modular skeleton saves weight and cuts production costs. Engines will be shared with the 208 and 2008 crossover, albeit with a slight retune for improved economy figures. The petrol engine is a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder, while there'll also be two four-pot diesels. An eco-minded e-HDi model will join the range later, boasting an 85g/km CO2 output. Hang on: are those pictures of a 208 interior? Nope, you're looking at the new 308's cabin. Peugeot's new family hatch has borrowed a few tricks from its supermini sister, like the downsized steering wheel and high-mounted instrument dials (here featuring an anticlockwise rev counter like CAR's new Aston Martin DB9 long-termer). Designed to create more space in the cabin and make the car feel more agile, the tiny 'wheel treatment has taken some vitriol for not catering to taller drivers, but Peugeot is sticking to its guns.

Another 208-style feature is the central touchscreen system for entertainment, vehicle settings and sat-nav. Peugeot is making big claims about the new 308's 'premium materials and exceptional build quality' too, as it fights for a dwindling market share in the face of stiff Korean and German opposition. Does the 308 look good enough to succeed? Add your thoughts in the comments below. When can I buy a Peugeot 308? The new 308 goes on sale in the UK in January 2014. Prices 'will remain competitive', says Peugeot, with only slight rises over the current 308 planned in line with inflation. Expect the entry-level models to start at 拢16,000. Will there be a hot GTi version? It's being considering, but nothing's signed off yet. Peugeot could easily drop the RCZ R concept's 256bhp engine into the 308, punting the hot hatch straight into new Seat Leon Cupra and Vauxhall Astra VXR territory. However, Peugeot could opt for the enthusiast-appeasing 'GT' nameplate for the flagship 308 as it did in 2011, using the 208 GTi's 197bhp mill.

This attractive 1953 Volkswagen Beetle shows less than 31,000 kilometers from new, and was formerly part of a German museum collection. Built in June 1953, it is a very early oval-window example and is offered complete with a period correct roof-mounted luggage rack and period luggage, as well as zippered protective luggage covers, known as "travel suits". The car is offered in highly detailed, correct and remarkably original condition. Although the original engine is no longer with the car, it was replaced with a correct, documented unit, featuring correct finishes and labels, as well as the original carburetor tag. The luggage compartment, engine bay and underbody are clean and well detailed, with correct finishes and components throughout. In its heyday, the Beetle was praised around the world as a model of affordable yet delightful practicality. This 1200 cc example will continue to receive the highest acclamation wherever it is showcased.

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

Ireland's place in Volkswagen history was established in 1950 when a consigment of six Beetles arrived into Dublin packed in crates in what was termed 'completely knocked down' form ready to be assembled. A former tram depot was aquired for this purpose at 162 Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge - the premises now occupied by Ballsbridge Motors. There, the first Volkswagen ever built outside Germany was assembled thereby establishing Ireland's unique place in the history of Volkswagen worldwide. That first Volkswagen ever assembled outside Germany, which survives in its original condition is exhibited in the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, Germany. With assembly output rising from 46 units in 1950 to 2155 units in 1952, the business quickly outgrew the Shelbourne Road facility leading to the purchase of new premises at Naas Road, Dublin. In 1955, assembly was transferred from Shelbourne Road to the new factory on Naas Road - premises which had earlier been commissioned by tayloring company Montague Burton then placed on the market for sale before ever being used.

In the new Naas Road premises, Beetle assembly continued non-stop until September 1977 when the production of the Beetle ceased in Europe. During this period, the Naas Road facility - which remains the headquarters of the company today - also assembled the renowned Volkswagen Transporter van. The Volkswagen organisation in Ireland was founded by the late Stephen O'Flaherty. In 1950, thanx to his vision and enterprise, the Volkswagen Beetle was introduced into Ireland. It was an initiative that was to change the face of Irish motoring and lead to the establishment of a nationwide industry that was to grow in significance and importance ever since. Widely remembered as one of the great pioneers of modern Irish motoring, Stephen O'Flaherty was born in Passage East, Co. Waterford in 1902. His father came from the Aran Islands. By 1946, he had re-shaped the business transforming it into a fully-fledged motor distribution and retailing operation trading under the name Motor Distributors Limited. In its new guise, motor activities began with the assembly of forty-eight Adlers. By 1948 the range expanded to include Willys Overland jeeps and station wagons, Nash and Singer (assembled in Townsend Street), followed by Lagonda , Aston Martin and Alvis (imported fully built up). Then along came Volkswagen.

Highline and Comfortline share the same 1.4 litre engine capacity.. 125 PS. And the car is on front driven wheels.. Its a pretty family-oriented car which I wouldn't mind consider for a buy. Will show you through more features of the car and you would know why it is so .. But even as a single, I wouldn't mind havin' a car like this.. I can chuck all my 'barangs barangs' in the spacious boot behind whenever I have many things to carry around! A foldable table-top for you when you need. Not all the cars will have this.. You can use this for other purpose like putting your magazines on it too! It made the car sooo airy and guess what? On a Hot day, you wouldn't feel hot inside the car too.. The panoramic roof can be close entirely with a automatic shade/visor with a touch of a button. Why not have a picnic in the car?

Interior looks really Posh! Nice speedometer with simple dials and a LCD screen. The Sportsvan can accelerate from 0 - 100 km/h in 9.9 secs.. MPV.. and it has a top speed of 200 km/h. And I'm lovin' this too! You can put some things IN the Dashboard too! Here I put my shades! A view of the airy interior of the car from the front. Overall look of the stylish all-black dashboard! Functions on the steering wheel are pretty standard across all Volkswagen cars. There is a cruise control and you can also set your speed limit.. 80 km/h, when you step on your accelerator pedal, it would only accelerate until 80 km/h. You can answer phone calls and adjust the radio stations and volume all on the steering wheel. Start/Stop Engine with a push of a button. A number of functions over here at the gearstick area. Auto-Hold - its a function which you can activate when you stopped the car at the red traffic light, the car would just be held stationary without you stepping on the brake pedal. Driving mode - allows you to choose your mode of driving; Eco, Normal, Sports or Individual settings.

Are you believe Volkswagen will launch a new version of the Microbus in 2014? In the spirit of the new VW Beetle on that time, Volkswagen presented a VW Microbus concept car. This car is reminiscent of the original 1960s microbuses. The snout is a little longer than the original microbus, accommodating modern crash standards. Volkswagen also presented Microbus configurations, such as the pop-up camper top and was also a pickup, double cab. It's the smaller edition of this microbus in. The VW group then got a research that the world population need of family car is increased significantly. So then Volkswagen group made the new edition of 2014 Volkswagen microbus to be effective family car series. My opinion, this is just research for starting the project will realized or not, and the design is far a way from the legend. And there are some concept designs from VW microbus enthusiasts that ever existed on below, but just illustration and never be embodied in the form like VW Bulli above. It's the Fact Volkswagen start on 2001 already have a plans for to revive the legendary of the classic bus Type2 T1 and T2.

Volkswagen鈥檚 Scirocco was a hit with North American customers from its 1975 introduction to its 1989 demise, when it was replaced by the more agile, more luxurious and more expensive Corrado. Clean Sciroccos used to be fairly common in the secondhand market, but as the years go by, even second-generation models, especially those in unaltered form, get increasingly hard to find. Though not specified in the ad, the car would have come powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder, rated at 90 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque, and in this case is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. 1985 VW Scirocco Coupe, rare Wolfsburg Edition, is looking for a loving home. Volkswagen is presenting in Paris the world premiere of a new generation of the Touareg luxury class SUV. ABSplus. ABSplus, developed and patented by Volkswagen, is a world first: The standard equipment system shortens the braking distance of the Touareg by up to 20% on loose driving surfaces. Before now SUVs became unstable when braking hard on surfaces such as gravel or sand and steerability and stopping distance were significantly impaired. This is where ABSplus comes in: Thanks to an innovative traction control system the Touareg pushes parts of the surface material in front of the temporarily locked-up wheels. This creates a type of braking wedge. The result: Braking action is greatly increased without impacting steerability and the stopping distance is correspondingly reduced. Front Scan. No less innovative than ABSplus is Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with a new follow-to-stop feature: in this combination the system is referred to as Front Scan. The radar-based distance control automatically slows down and accelerates the vehicle within a previously defined range of speed depending on traffic conditions. The system now employed in the Touareg slows the car down to a complete stop in emergency situations.

Also new: the stopping distance control integrated into the ACC system. Ahead of certain situations it "arms" the brakes as a preventative measure. Side Scan. Another assistant system in the new Touareg generation, being introduced for the first time in a Volkswagen, is the lane changing assistant (Side Scan). This system monitors the area next to and behind the Touareg and a control lamp in the exterior mirrors warns of a possible risk of collision when changing lanes. ESP innovations. New features have been added to the ESP electronic stabilization program. Driving dynamics package with dynamic response. The Touareg masters tough off-road use and extreme tours and yet offers the comfort of a sedan and remarkable sportiness. Previously, this dynamic could be increased in terms of the chassis via an optional sport chassis for Touareg models with steel suspension. A sport chassis - with dynamic response in this case - is now also being added to the models with pneumatic shock suspension.

On this day May 28th in 1937, the government of Germany-then under the control of Adolf Hitler of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party-forms a new state-owned automobile company, then known as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH. Originally operated by the German Labor Front, a Nazi organization, Volkswagen was headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. 140 at the time). To provide the design for this 鈥減eople鈥檚 car,鈥?Hitler called in the Austrian automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche. In 1938, at a Nazi rally, the Fuhrer declared: 鈥淚t is for the broad masses that this car has been built. Volkswagen sales in the United States were initially slower than in other parts of the world, due to the car鈥檚 historic Nazi connections as well as its small size and unusual rounded shape. In 1959, the advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernbach launched a landmark campaign, dubbing the car the 鈥淏eetle鈥?and spinning its diminutive size as a distinct advantage to consumers.

Over the next several years, VW became the top-selling auto import in the United States. In 1960, the German government sold 60 percent of Volkswagen鈥檚 stock to the public, effectively denationalizing it. With the Beetle鈥檚 design relatively unchanged since 1935, sales grew sluggish in the early 1970s. VW bounced back with the introduction of sportier models such as the Rabbit and later, the Golf. In 1998, the company began selling the highly touted 鈥淣ew Beetle鈥?while still continuing production of its predecessor. After 1949, production at Volkswagen steadily increased. Nordhoff's experience and knowledge proved invaluable for the company. Late in 1949, an idea for a utility/transport vehicle was developed, and by 1950, the VW transporter was born. Volkswagens were being exported to neighboring European countries such as Denmark, Sweeden, Luxemburg, Belgium, and Switzerland. As early as 1950, Volkswagen began producing Beetles in South Africa (They were now known as Beetles) as well. Volkswagen comissioned an old German coach building company, Karmann, to build their Beetle convertibles. Every single convertible Volkswagen Beetle was completed by Karmann: hence the special badges on VW convertibles.

In 1952, a Volkswagen dealership was opened in England: which was the first there. A few Volkswagens were imported into the United States in 1949 by Ben Pon, but they didn't immediatley gain popularity. Very few were sold in their first year in the US. The Hoffmann company of New York, which imported Beetles in the early 1950s, eventually abandonded Volkswagen, and imported Porsches instead. Volkswagen did not sell many cars in the United States until later in the mid-1950's. In 1951, Volkswagen began to export a deluxe version of the beetle. There was already a "standard" Beetle, which was only available in a dull gray color. These standard Beetles were spartan: they lacked synchromesh transmissions, exterior and interior chrome, and other special extra options that one might expect to have as standard in cars today. There were also regular export cars, that were available in several colors. The export cars also had chrome and more options as standard, such as a radio. The American export cars had even more chrome than regular export cars, and were generally the most elaborate with options and features. Volkswagen transporters were not as popular as Beetles, and in the first 5 years of production, there were 4 times fewer Buses built as Beetles. The Buses (and all other transporters) produced before 1955 had characteristically large engine access doors. Today, they are largely known as "barndoor" buses. Some people think that barndoor is supposed to be a reference to the side doors, but it is a misconception. These early barndoor transporters are very rare today. Still in the 1950's, Volkswagen had already acted on its global goals by building factories in several countries. A factory began building Beetles in England, the plant in South Africa was building them, and a plant in Brazil provided a South American connection. Later, in 1960, a plant in Australia opened up, but never ended up being as successful as the other factories.

However, Volkswagen has a history of electrical reliability problems. The Eos has no recalls yet. Expect average to above-average reliability. The standard warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles. Neither the government nor the IIHS have safety ratings available. Standard safety equipment includes side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability and traction control. 8,000 less than the Audi TT, and although it doesn鈥檛 have leather seats, it does have side airbags and slightly better gas mileage. 7,500 less than the BMW Z4, but has a smaller, four-cylinder engine. However, if you can live without the hard top, the Chrysler Sebring Touring Convertible makes an excellent alternative. For the same price as a four-cylinder Eos, you get a six-cylinder engine, DVD player, and a CD changer. But, the Sebring doesn鈥檛 have traction control and gets five fewer miles to the gallon. 鈥淭he 2007 Volkswagen Eos鈥檚 odd looks will probably keep it from having the success of the New Beetle, but looks aside, the Eos offers a lot of practicality and some real tech niceties. The hardtop protects the car in harsh weather and can quickly become a fun-in-the-sun machine. 鈥淎s a top-down environment, the interior is as calm as a spring day, and it gets almost balmy once you deploy the pop-up wind blocker integrated into the windshield header and then erect the detachable windscreen behind the front seats. It鈥檚 also easy to take a seat, thanks to wide doors and a short, upright A-pillar that won鈥檛 poke your eye out.

The Volkswagen New Beetle launched with great fanfare over a decade ago, reviving the classic Beetle name from the company's history. Yesterday at the LA Auto Show, however, VW sent the car packing. The company hosted a press conference where they announced that 2010 would be the car's final year. To commemorate the moment, VW released a "Final Edition" special model at the show, expected to sell only 3000 units in a unique paint scheme. Half of that number will be hardtop coupes while the other half will be convertibles. While most of the vehicle is the same as the New Beetle you could have purchased over the last few years, this new edition comes with a sport suspension and unique 17-inch wheels. The New Beetle launched in 1998 to incredible amounts of media and consumer attention. It caught (or, more likely, started) the wave of retro hype that automakers fixated on during the millenium. Cars like the Ford Thunderbird arrived on the scene hoping to curry the same favor that VW found with its new-age Beetle.

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

This car is the oldest known Beetle in the United States and the 5th-oldest known Beetle in existence. All 600 Beetles made during the war were delivered to high-ranking military and party officers. This car was delivered to Kanzlei des Fuhrers (Hitler's personal chancellery) in Berlin. The 'KdF' in KdF-Wagen stands for Kraft durch Freude - 'strength through joy.' The town where the Beetle factory was built was named KdF-Stadt, now known as Wolfsburg and remains the home of Volkswagen today. This black over salt-and-pepper car was restored in 1999. The Beetle is perhaps the best-selling car of all-time. Truly, a recognizable shape that has stood the test of time. The vehicle is still being produced in Mexico, continuing the long-time running record. Adolf Hitler was searching for a people's car that was capable of transporting three children and two adults at speeds of sixty miles-per-hour. The car was to be inexpensive, costing the same as a motorcycle. Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to produce such a vehicle. There are many theories as to where the designs originated from.

Some believe Hitler designed the vehicle. Some theorize that it was Joseph Ganz's 1920 design that was the true inspiration for the Beetle design. Porsche had created designs for the Mercedes-Benz 170H, which played into the design of the Beetle. Inspiration for the Beetle had been drawn from the Tatra vehicles, mainly the T97, that had been designed by Hans Ledwinka. Due to the similarities, Tatra launched a lawsuit which never really materialized due to Germany invading Czechoslovakia. The lawsuit was later re-opened after World War II and Volkswagen was forced to pay Tatra 3,000,000 Deutsche Marks. This left Volkswagen with little money for development of new Beetle models. The Volkswagen Beetle first came on the scene in 1947, but they were known by a different name. KdF, short for Kraft durch Freude meaning 'power by joy', was designated to these small, gas-friendly vehicles. In English, the name Beetle was used.

In German, they were known as Kafer, and in French they were called Coccinelle. These little bundles of joy featured mechanical drum brakes and a gearbox void of synchromesh. In 1949 the Volkswagen logo was placed on the rims. The engine was expanded to 1131 cc and was capable of producing 25 horsepower. The models that were produced after October of 1949 could be started without a 'starting crank'. Two convertible options were offered by Volkswagen in 1949. The two-seater design, designated 14A, was penned by Josef Hebmuller. The four-seater Type 15 version was designed and produced by Karmann of Osnabruck. The four-seater was vastly more popular and stayed in production for 30 years. The 14A was stylish and attractive, with the major shortcoming being a fire that destroyed the factory where they were being produced. The two-seaters featured a rear deck nearly identical to the front hood. The strength of the car, lost by removing the roof, was amplified by a stronger windshield frame and dual Z-section girders located under the floor. In 1953, the last of the Hebmuller rolled off the assembly line, after only 696 examples were produced.

In a time when practicality ruled over style, the four-seater cabriolet was king. The Karmann company had a long history of designing and building cars. In business since 1901, was familiar with assembly line production, benefits and features of different types of metals, and the styles of multiple markets. The mechanical, cable-driven brakes were replaced with hydraulic brakes in 1950. During the 1950's the Beetle saw exterior and interior improvements. 1951 saw the addition of arm-rests which were discontinued just a few months later. In 1952, 2nd-4th gears became synchronized. The dashboard was redesigned with a glove compartment. In 1955, the bumper was improved and electrical direction-indicators were installed. A second tail-pipe was added. The front seats became wider and could be moved to three different seat-back adjustable positions. In 1956, the tires became tubeless. Near the end of '56, side view mirrors became standard on all Beetle models. In 1957 the front window was increased by 17 percent while the rear window received a 95 percent increase. A new dashboard, rear view mirror, radio, and a speaker appeared. The turn signals would now turn-off automatically. Up to this point, a roller pedal had been used to initiate acceleration. This was the year that the gas pedal replaced the roller pedal. In 1958, ivory disc wheels were offered. In 1960, an engine capable of producing 34 horsepower was offered. The speedometer was increased from 74 mph to 87 mph. A windshield-wiper washer system became available. The front directional light was changed from white to amber. A gas gauge was added in July of 1961. In 1963, the seats were changed from wool upholstery to synthetic. The VW emblem located on the hubcap was no longer painted. The safety of the vehicle was once-again enhanced with the enlargement directional lights. There were minor changes in 1964. The windows did, however, become larger. In 1965, the front axle was improved. The ongoing saga of incremental improvements received another chapter - A defroster vent was added to the center of the dashboard.

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

We Love Volkswagen's Past, Present And Future..,

Just after World War II, Volkswagen introduced the Microbus. Ben Pon, a Dutch Volkswagen Importer, sketched a design which ultimately led to the Microbus. His vision for these vehicles were inspired by motorized trolleys and he envisioned a vehicle that was basically a box on wheels built atop of the Beetle chassis. When Heinz Nordhoff became chief executive a year later he completed the design and put it into production. At the 1949 Geneva Motor Show the VW Microbus was displayed to the public. By 1950 there were ten Microbuses produced a day. Over its entire production lifespan of nearly four decades, the design was virtually unchanged. There were over five million examples produced. The vehicle provided its occupants with roomy transportation for eight. With the engine mounted in the back, the driver was undisturbed by the noise it produced. Offered at a low cost, the vehicles were a bargain.

The Transporter, also known as the Type 2, was introduced in 1950 and was based on the Beetle floorpan. These were popular both with commercial businesses and personal recreation. From 1951 through 1958 around 1000 examples of the Volkswagen Camper were built by the Wesfalia Company. This model was replaced in 1958 by the Sonderausfuhrungen, commonly known as 'SO'. The VW Campers provided seating for eight and storage space for luggage. The seats could be removed which would provided additional room for hauling larger items. This 1952 Volkswagen 'Barndoor' Westfalia Camper was found in the basement of the Westfalia museum when daimler Chrysler acquired Wesfalia in recent years. It is a one-off creation and believed to be one of only three early buses fitted with a camping box interior. The other two are still in the Westfalia Museum and were created in 1952. It has undergone a restoration since new and finished in Dove blue exterior and white bumpers. It has been shown only once, and that was at the London, England Volkswagen World Show in April of 2006. It is equipped with a rare interior 'kamper kit'.

90,000. It is the oldest example of its kind in the world. Since it was offered without reserve, the vehicle was going to be sold regardless of the bid. 38,500 which means the seller was not as well accommodated but the buyer got a bargain. After World War II, Volkswagen has created a Van/Camper that has assumed many names and been produced in many markets for many markets. Names such as the Eurovan, Microbus, Westfalia Camper, Panel Van, Kombi, Samba, Pick-up, Westy, Multivan, Weekender, Splittie, 11-window, 13-window, 15-window,21-window, 23-window, Breadloaf, Bay-Window, Vanagon, VW Bus, Bully, and the list continues. During the years there has been much experimentation with this vehicle to include truck beds, campers, transporters, and more. This vehicle, in all its many facets, has had a sympathetic fallowing since its inception and has become a counterculture symbol for many generations. Its utilitarian shape has made it suitable for many scenarios and its low cost has made it economically viable. The Volkswagen Type 2 Van was introduced in 1950 and was the second production line of vehicles introduced by Volkswagen. The first model was the Type 1 Beetle. The idea for the Type 2 came from the Dutch VW importer named Ben Pon who created the designs in 1947. Many of the vehicles aerodynamic short-comings were resolved in a wind tunnel at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Three years later, the Type 2 began leaving the Wolfsburg factory. The Type 2 was produced from March 8th of 1950 through 2002 with many variations along the way. There were versions of the Type 2 constructed, such as the T1, T2, and T3, to name a few. This is where things get a little confusing.
