Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI Road Test

It’s a sad fact that manufacturers’ concept cars rarely go into production. Well, Volkswagen is one company that has gone ahead and bitten the bullet - the awesome Touareg V10 twin-turbo diesel is a fantasy vehicle come reality! The bit that makes the Touareg V10 TDI so extraordinary is, of course, the engine. Hills that you once thought steep are climbed with barely a whiff of throttle and the ability to run away other cars from a standing start is simply startling. Gently squeeze the throttle and the Touareg V10 TDI picks up its nose and sprints! So how on earth is it possible for a near 2.5-tonne SUV to be so potent, you ask? Well, there are lots of cylinders, lots of cubic inches and a couple of turbochargers! The TDI Touareg uses a long-stroke 2-valves-per-cylinder V10 engine that displaces 5.0-litres and is boosted by a pair of turbochargers.

The static compression ratio is 18.0:1 - oh, did we mention it’s a direct-injection diesel? The twin-turbo V10 diesel engine configuration might seem peculiar at first but it makes sense when you consider the balance of low-down torque, emissions and fuel economy. The twin-turbo V10 diesel can be quite frugal when driven gently - the official 12.2-litres per 100km average figure would be difficult to achieve but we regularly saw short-term averages below 15.0-litres per 100km (as read from the trip computer). Average fuel consumption during our test was around 17-litres per 100km. A 100-litre fuel tank is fitted, providing a good touring range. But you don’t buy a V10 twin-turbo for fuel economy. That V10 turbo engine delivers effortless performance from very low revs and good response. Despite the size of the engine, there’s minimal vibration through to the cabin and the whizzes and whooshes of the turbo system are well muted.

But there’s no mistaking this machine for a diesel - it has a hint of clatter at idle and it will occasionally blow a cloud of black smoke from the twin tailpipes when you stand on the go pedal. Volkswagen claims a 0 - 100 km/h time of 7.8-seconds, but we were stunned to record mid 7s on consecutive hand-timed runs; that’s bloody quick! The stupendous torque is evident when the front tyres scabble for grip when the V10 Touareg is stalled up and released off the line. Impressive stuff considering the tyres are nothing less than Pirelli P-Zero Rossos measuring 275/45 19! When this 2.5-tonne monster barrels up to a corner at speed you can apply the brake pedal at the last moment thanks to a truly mammoth braking system. At the front are tremendous 6-pot front calipers that bite over nearly half of the disc (ventilated, of course) and the rear uses chunky 4-pot calipers. ABS, EBD and brake assist come as standard braking supplements.

We have absolutely no criticism of the V10 TDI’s brakes. Point it towards an apex and the Touareg chassis feels immensely stable and the lateral grip from those P-Zero Rossos is excellent. It’s apparent that the chassis is set up with a slight understeer bias but you can rely on the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) to prevent excessive understeer or oversteer. Note that if you want to drive the Touareg to its limits you absolutely must switch the transmission to manual mode - this gives much better control. The power assisted rack and pinion steering on the Touareg also makes it hard work to negotiate a series of relatively tight bends. The steering is light and has little feel - all that we felt was tramlining along bitumen edges. Interestingly, the Touareg is based on the same design as the Porsche Cayenne and uses double wishbones at the front and rear.

The V10 TDI also gets CDC (Continuous Damping Control) air suspension. The air suspension system is self-levelling and gives up to 300mm of ground clearance on demand. There are three damper settings - Sport, Auto and Comfort. The difference between Sport and Comfort is noticeable but the ride always remains compliant and comfortable. The V10 TDI has a curious mix of off-roading abilities. On one hand, it looks the goods with a switchable centre diff lock, high and low range gearing, hill start and downhill assist, adjustable ride height, generous approach/departure angles and, of course, ample grunt. On the other hand, the 275/45 P-Zero Rossos were never intended to venture far off the bitumen and the standard spare wheel is a tiny space saver job. We’re told that a larger spare will be fitted to later examples, but - as it stands - the Touareg V10 TDI is not a truly serious bush-basher. The top-line Touareg is luxury-car refined, solid and well appointed.

The Tailgate Automatically Opens And Closes

The Touareg gets VW's first global hybrid application. EPA estimated highway fuel economy is 25 miles per gallon for the Touareg hybrid. Volkswagen is set to release the second generation of its Touareg, featuring a new look that has resulted in a weight loss of 350 pounds. The real news, though, is VW's first global use of a hybrid engine. The automaker gave details on the 2011 Touareg ahead of the 2010 Paris Auto Show. Appearance-wise, the 2011 Touareg is shorter and wider, with a longer wheelbase for more cabin space. More curves, fender flares, a chrome accent strip and shaped chrome exhaust tips are among the exterior changes for what VW calls a more "muscular" appearance. The Touareg also gets LED running lights and bi-xenon headlamps. The tailgate automatically opens and closes, with controls inside the vehicle, at the tailgate and on the key fob. Sport, Luxury and Executive trim levels are offered, with wheel and tire sizes from 18 to 20 inches. The hybrid model has the 19-inchers. The panoramic sunroof is substantially larger than the outgoing model's; it's standard on all models but the Sport level. The interior gets the expected electronic amenities including a touchscreen navigation system with an 8-inch screen, DVD/CD player with MP3 and satellite radio, a 60-GB hard drive and 3D navigation display. An improved head restraint system, standard electronic stability control and anti-slip regulation are among the safety features. EPA estimated highway fuel economy is 25 miles per gallon for the Touareg hybrid, in part thanks to regenerative braking and a standard stop/start system. The diesel Touareg offers EPA estimated 19 city/28 highway fuel economy, while the gasoline-engined Touareg offers 16/23 mpg, which is a 19 percent improvement over the previous gas-engined Touareg, VW says.

The hitch comes with all required mounting hardware and it installs without need for drilling, just some rear bumper fascia trimming. We have installed this hitch on several X5s and the linked video showing a 2017 model year will show you the whole process. I also included a photo showing the appearance of the finished installation. 13077 that you referenced is actually the only hitch available that is confirmed to fit your 2017 BMW X5 that has the M-Sport Package. The Draw-Tite hitch that you also mentioned is indeed designed for the BMW X5, but it will not fit the M model. 18050 be used with any non-trailer load like a bike rack. 75600. This is a 2 inch hitch rated for 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 600 pounds tongue weight. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop.

75600 is a concealed cross tube design there is not a bracket that is designed to install on the cross tube that is long enough to clear the bumper on the 2017 BMW X5. The cross tube sits too high up once the Draw-Tite hitch is installed. C58000 to mount the 7-way plug. 6,000 lb towing capacity. If you need help with installation I have attached a video for you on a similar X5. 13077. Because of the cut out area in the fascia that is there currently it may not be as severe though. The difficulty of the installation will depend on your experience. 13077 state to discard the steel bumper beam. The hitch's crosstube takes the place of that beam. 13077, is that they will not fit M models. 119250KIT because with it you will not have to cut and splice into the vehicle wiring for installation. We have a hitch that fits all models of the 2016 BMW X5 except M-models but it is not the invisi-hitch you mentioned.

75600 and it would be visible from the rear of the vehicle. I attached a install video for it as well. 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. The trailer hitch fits we offer for your 2016 BMW X5 without the M package would be what you'd want for your Xdrive40e model. 75600. We have two options for trailer hitches for a 2015 BMW X5 that will fit all their motor and package options. 75600. Both trailer hitches will require fascia trimming, but will not require any drilling into your frame. Both hitches are very good quality and will hold up very well.

The restrictions are actually for the 2015 BMW X5 with the M Sport Package so yes in this case the restrictions will apply. 13077 which is confirmed to fit the M Sport Package. I confirmed this with my contact at Curt. An installation video is linked for you to reference as well as the instructions. 13077. This will require fascia trimming but will also allow you to get the maximum towing and tongue weight capacity out of your vehicle as the hitch is rated at 6000 lbs towing and 600 lb tongue weight. This is the only confirmed fit we have for your M model vehicle. A weight distribution hitch will help with the overall ride of the trailer and will help mitigate sway. 13077 are the confirmed hitch fits for your 2015 BMW X5 so long as it is not the M model; for that model we have no hitch.

Volkswagen Shows Off Gesture Control Tech With E-Golf Touch

Volkswagen has unveiled its latest infotainment system, the e-Golf Touch concept, at the CES show in Las Vegas, complete with a futuristic gesture control system. Only last year Volkswagen unveiled the Golf R Touch at the CES show with some gesture control functions. Now however VW is showing off its near production-ready system with the e-Golf Touch concept. The e-Golf Touch features a 9.2-inch, 1280 x 640 resolution display, with a configurable homepage for that personal touch. In addition, there is an updated voice recognition system and as aforementioned, gesture control. Volkswagen has remained tight-lipped as to the exact details of the gesture control, but it is expected the system will make its way into the next generation Golf Mk8, projected for a release later this year. The driver of the e-Golf Touch can also save their individual settings into Volkswagen’s cloud, the “Personalization 2.0” system. Volkswagen says, “With the introduction of the e-Golf Touch, Volkswagen presents a more advanced generation of the Modular Infotainment Toolkit (MIB) and for the first time, an early series-production preview of this new intuitive control technology. “Volkswagen will also be the first manufacturer to present a new ‘Keyword Activation’ voice recognition function in the e-Golf Touch. This feature allows the driver to start voice recognition simply by saying ‘Hello Volkswagen’, or similar, to the system. The system includes wireless mobile phone charging via electrical induction built into the armrests in both the front and rear of the cabin. Rear passengers have control of multimedia and vehicular settings, with the help of a tablet in the rear. On top of this, there are high-speed USB ports installed into the rear.

Low re-gen up, heavy re-gen down. 90% of the time. No plans to take it to the snow (that's what my R32 is for) and not on long trips (minivan). Just commuting to work and running errands and picking up the kids (90% of my driving).. My educated guess, once you have an EV in your garage, you may become spoiled like the rest of us and begin a plan to replace all your vehicles with EV's. I have an S and use it exclusively. As soon as the Tesla 3 arrives, or even the Nissan NV200EV arrives, I'll be buying one for my son and one for my wife. I can see that happening, but not until I can afford a longer range car like the Tesla, We drive to LA a few times a year and a car with a 100mile range would make the trip unbearably long. We thought about figuring out a way to get a Model S 60, and then get a Spark or Fiat but even that was too much with the options we would need to make it useful. But I digress, I've researched the E-golf pretty nutty and I think it's still the best fit for us. VW has gone beyond just selling the car. Has anyone seen this German VW ad for the e-Golf featuring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy? JaegerTech, any idea when the e-Golf will be coming to the East Coast? I am deciding between the e-Golf or the Kia Soul as our 2nd EV to pair with the Model S until Gen III comes out.

VW has an 8 year warranty on the battery just like Tesla and I live in San Francisco, so I'm not worried. You must be careful about the battery warranty, because many times it does not cover capacity loss or there might be a shorter capacity warranty (which is what happened to the Leaf). Accelerated degradation in hot weather is the biggest issue that affected the Leaf because of the lack of active temperature management. However, it seems VW's 8 year/100k mile warranty does cover 70% capacity, which is better than the Leaf's 5 year/60k mile 66% capacity warranty. If you are okay with 70% capacity down the run then it might work out. Has anyone seen this German VW ad for the e-Golf featuring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy? Really cool, even the details. Leonard Nimoy (Spock) looks funny without his pointy ears! EPA range confirmed at 83 miles.

As we await the MS, wife's very interested in leasing the e-Golf as a commuter car to replace her Mini. Waiting on a couple of VW dealerships nearby to get inventory in in early November. There's some mind block with all these knuckle heads at these huge auto companies. Damn. Can no one make an EV with at LEAST 100 miles? Every. single. time. There's some mind block with all these knuckle heads at these huge auto companies. Big auto is unwilling to build an EV that will take significant market share from their existing ICE vehicles, they are terrified of that possibility.
