2019 Volkswagen E-Golf Reviews

The Volkswagen e-Golf returns unchanged for the 2017 model year. The 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf is an all-electric variant of the Golf hatchback and is currently the only EV offered by Volkswagen. Like the rest of the Golf family, the e-Golf rides on Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform, which will be used on all cars and crossovers with a transverse engine layout. Powering the 2017 e-Golf is an electric motor with 115 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque paired to a single-speed automatic transmission. For 2016 EPA ratings, on a single charge, the e-Golf can travel up to 83 miles or 126/105 mpg-e city/highway. Compared to its main rivals, the e-Golf has less range than the Kia Soul EV, Nissan Leaf and Fiat 500e but more than the Mitsubishi i-Miev and Ford Focus Electric. The EPA has made more strict the way it rates vehicles for 2017, so ratings on cars unchanged from 2016 to 2017 may still change slightly. The e-Golf also retains the same interior space as the gas-powered Golf hatchback, giving it plenty of passenger space and 22.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the split-folding rear seats up and 52.7 cubic feet with them up.

On the range-topping SEL Premium trim, the e-Golf comes with the Discover Pro multimedia interface, which includes an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and navigation. While the e-Golf hasn’t been crash tested by NHTSA, the standard Golf hatchback received a five-star safety rating (out of a possible five stars). Good score on all crash tests (Good is the highest possible score). In the IIHS’ crash avoidance and mitigation tests, Golf models with the Driver Assistance package received an Advanced rating after it reduced a 12-mph impact by 10 mph. The Driver Assistance package comes with forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, and park assist. In a 2015 First Test, we noted that the Volkswagen e-Golf drove without many of the quirks found in electric vehicles and was able to keep up with traffic without issue. However, Eco mode dulls the throttle response so much that it’s best to keep the car out of that mode.
