VW Jetta GLI Ad Sees The Manual Transmission As Anti-Theft Device

Is Volkswagen on the save the manuals team? Yup, and in this particular car it鈥檚 connected to a throaty V8 instead of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder you鈥檇 find with any other new GLI. Really, just watch (and listen) to this video and tell us you don鈥檛 hear a V8. Ridiculously fake engine sound notwithstanding, VW isn鈥檛 out-of-line with this clever commercial. With so few vehicles now offering a clutch-operated manual transmission these days, fewer people know how to operate one. That includes misguided youngsters who fancy themselves as brazen car thieves, and we鈥檝e all seen news stories in recent years about said car boosters getting foiled by the ol鈥?three-pedal anti-theft system. That鈥檚 why the driver portrayed in this video doesn鈥檛 lock the car, but don鈥檛 do that in real life because thieves are dumb and will still try to nick your ride anyway. That鈥檚 probably why VW also injected similar fine print into the end of the clip. As for that V8 engine, dubbing fake engine sounds into commercials is nothing new but this offense is rather silly. Maybe that was the point, but with the VeeDub鈥檚 boosted 2.0-liter already being a lively, impressive mill, why not give us a matching aural experience to accompany the on-screen action? Yes, we鈥檙e being picky, but that鈥檚 our job. Also, we hate it when automakers try to fake something so obvious as an engine sound. In any case, the Jetta GLI is a cool little sports sedan that lets you row your own gears. That by itself is a rarity these days, and hey, one day that feature could save you from something unfortunate.

The lane-keeping assist isn't anywhere near as strong as you'd find in a more expensive Audi, though. The 2019 Jetta SEL gets a better digital dashboard than any other car anywhere near this price range. The actual Google Earth view is exclusive to Audi, but you can make the entire thing your map. If you want more supplementary information, you can shrink the map to a trapezoid. Or overlay two large dials. Know where you're going? During four days in Colorado, I averaged 37mpg. A week in DC with a flat tire dropped that a lot. I'm starting to wonder if 26 feet above sea level is going to be enough in the coming years. I don't know why I'd choose this display, but you can. Only the Jetta SEL has the Digital Cockpit. Otherwise, you get old-fashioned gauges like this. MIB II has a clean, intuitive, responsive UI. Fingerprints are obvious when it's off.
