Even in the crossover-crazed U.S. Jetta sedan is Volkswagen鈥檚 best-seller. In fact, it has been for 30-plus years. The Microbus and Dasher outsold the compact sedan in 1980, and VW鈥檚 pickup edged it in 鈥?1, but the Jetta has been on top every year since, with VW selling 3 million in the U.S. 1978. Now comes the seventh generation, and this time it鈥檚 unique to North America. The car has been dropped completely in Europe, where hatchbacks and wagons are more popular, and China gets its own version. The 2019 Jetta now rides on VW Group鈥檚 outstanding, flexible MQB platform, also underpinning the Audi A3 and TT, VW鈥檚 Golf/GTI, Atlas and Tiguan SUVs, the upcoming Arteon and various Seats and Skodas we don鈥檛 get here. Compared to the 2018 version, the new car is about an inch longer and slightly wider and lower and has shorter overhangs. The new shape is about as conservative as they come, even with the redesigned front fascia and standard LED lighting. The roof slopes back faster, giving it a more coupe-like profile; VW says an emphasis on tuning the aero makes for a 0.27 Cd, a 10 percent improvement. Still, a dramatic change it ain鈥檛.

A Domino's delivery driver has run over a man who was lying on the road outside his house after a day of heavy drinking, police say. Jason Francis, 29, was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta on Stanley Street in Scarborough, Perth, at about 8pm on Saturday. Police said the delivery driver may not have seen Mr Francis. He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital by paramedics but could not be saved. Police are investigating why Mr Francis was lying on the street but it is understood he had earlier been drinking with friends. His friends had ordered him a ride home. Mr Francis' partner of eight years was unaware of his sudden death before she rushed outside to see emergency authorities who had set up a crime scene. Share Stanley Street was blocked off on Saturday night. The white Volkswagen was also towed away for examination. Domino's said the employee was returning to the store when Mr Francis was struck. Our thoughts are with the family of the victim involved and we remain focused on the health and wellbeing of the driver,' said a Domino's spokeswoman. Michael Mihailvos, who lives on the street, said he did not know the couple who had moved from the UK but said he had noticed a body near the side of the road. I could see some flashing lights and the police had closed off the road,' he told PerthNow. Mr Mihailovs said the incident was a tragedy for the usually quiet street. Neighbours described Mr Francis as a rare gem and a beautiful and outgoing soul. Officers are looking to speak to anyone who saw the Volkswagen in the Scarborough area prior to the incident.
