Mark Chutkow, chief of the criminal division for the U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan, declined to comment on the investigation. 16.5 billion to address environmental, state and owner claims in the United States. It still faces billions in potential fines and must resolve the fate of 85,000 polluting 3.0-liter vehicles. Reuters reported in August that VW and the Justice Department had held preliminary settlement talks about resolving a criminal probe into the emissions scandal. Liang was one of the engineers in Wolfsburg, Germany, directly involved in developing the defeat device for the Volkswagen Jetta in 2006, according to the indictment. The engineers had quickly realized the diesel engines they were designing for vehicles targeted at the U.S. So Liang and others, including employees of an entity referred to as "Company A," designed software that would activate the emission controls of an engine undergoing a government test and deactivate them afterward, according to the indictment. Liang and others referred to the defeat device as the "acoustic function," or "cycle-beating" software, prosecutors said. The indictment said Liang and his co-conspirators designed a software update in 2014 that VW told consumers would fix discrepancies being found in emissions testing. In fact, the update was to allow the cheat system to more easily detect when the vehicle was being tested, using the angle of the steering wheel. After a West Virginia University study showed the cars were emitting more pollutants on the road than tests had indicated, Liang and his co-conspirators lied to regulators, telling them the discrepancy was caused by "innocent" mechanical issues, authorities said.

What would you think if I told you that a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta set a new track record of 210.16 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats? Quite impressive, in my book. With this speed run the 2019 鈥淏onneville鈥淛etta broke the Southern California Timing Association鈥檚 (SCTA) Blown Gas Coupe (G/BGC) class record of 208.472 mph. Of course the Jetta was modified from its production-based EA888 engine and aerodynamically low 0.27 drag coefficient body shape. The 2.0-liter direct-injection and turbocharged engine in the Bonneville Jetta was modified for high output with new connecting rods, pistons, valves, camshafts, turbocharger, and exhaust system, but the basic block and crankshaft are stock. On the dyno, the engine achieved an output of 600 horsepower at 8500 rpm. To run at high speed on the salt, the Bonneville Jetta had many other changes from stock. The suspension was lowered, special Salt Flat wheels and tires were fitted, and a limited-slip differential was added to aid traction.

The interior has been stripped and outfitted with full track safety equipment鈥攕uch as a roll cage, racing seat and harness鈥攁nd a fire suppression system. To help slow the car down, the Bonneville Jetta was fitted with a pair of parachutes. Back in the world of everyday car usage, I recently had my second opportunity behind the wheel of the new Jetta. The Habanero Orange 2019 Jetta R-Line turned heads just like the Bonneville Jetta did. I couldn鈥檛 read the lips of folks on the street or in other vehicles but the orange color of the Jetta certainly got attention. 22,995 and is one of five trims offered on the 2019 Jetta. It sits in the middle of the S and SE below it, and the SEL and SEL Premium above. 18,545 for the S trim. On the outside the R-Line has 17-inch alloys fitted with 225/45 tires. A black grille and mirror caps, fog lights, a more aggressive rear bumper with dual exhausts, unique leather-wrapped steering wheel, black interior roof liner and two-tone seats with contrast stitching all help make the R-Line stand out.
