2019 Volkswagen Jetta Review

The Jetta is Volkswagen鈥檚 most popular model, and the 2005 model year looks to keep the trend going. It offers sprightly performance, upscale materials and a grown-up look. Volkswagen offers the Jetta in a number of trims: GL, Value Edition, GLS 2.0L, GL TDI, 2.5, GLS TDI, TDI, GLS 1.8T, and GLI 1.8T. Sedan and wagon body styles are offered. A five-cylinder engine is standard, and two four-cylinder engines are available, including a diesel. A manual transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. An automatic transmission is available. Larger than before, the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta pushes the boundaries for what can be classified as a compact vehicle. The chrome-framed front grille highlights VW鈥檚 move to give the Jetta a more modern design. The silhouette reveals a mix of a curvy front end and hood line, and the back end of the Jetta is squared off. Circular taillights provide a distinctive touch at the back.

Standard equipment includes 15-inch wheels, heated side-view mirrors and a chrome exhaust tip. A sunroof, a rear spoiler, fog lights, auto-leveling bi-xenon headlights, heated front windshield washer jets and 18-inch wheels are available. The 2005 Jetta鈥檚 cabin combines upscale materials with a simplistic design, giving the sedan a high-end look. A simple three-spoke steering wheel, a chunky transmission shifter and an uncomplicated center console layout are among the modern design cues. While the front seats are supportive and comfortable, taller passengers in the back likely will feel cramped. Materials are on par with what competitors offer. Power windows, manual air conditioning, a tilt-only steering wheel, cloth upholstery and front bucket seats are standard. Available features include automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a refrigerated glove box. Power for the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta comes from a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that makes 150 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.

The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic transmission. The next step up is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Transmission options for that powerplant are a six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic transmission. TDI models are equipped with a turbocharged 1.9-liter four-cylinder diesel that generates 110 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Transmission pairings are the same as with the five-cylinder engine. Fuel economy is best for the diesel powertrain, which is rated to get up to 30/38 mpg city/highway. The standard 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine carries an EPA rating of up to 19/28 mpg city/highway. Standard technology features on the 2005 Jetta include three 12-volt power outlets, remote keyless entry, a 10-speaker audio system and an AM/FM stereo with a CD player, MP3 capability and speed-sensitive volume. Optional equipment includes navigation, a six-disc CD changer and satellite radio.
