When we first sampled the new Mercedes coupe in Spain last November, we fearlessly predicted the pick of the range would be the one version that we didn't get to drive - the C450 AMG. The C-Class coupe was on hiatus for 2016 and reintroduced for 2017. The C-Class convertible was introduced for 2017. The new C-Class takes styling cues from the flagship S-Class, new last year, and comes standard with a raft of up-to-date safety gear such as a collision-avoidance system that can automatically brake to stop the car in some situations. The rear seat, a low point of the last C-Class, has markedly improved and now allows decent space for an adult.
It’s somewhat larger inside and out than the last generation, and it remains beautifully finished inside. It’s everything a Mercedes ought to be: comfortable, quiet, agile, and altogether well sorted out. It’s sporty and always enjoyable to drive. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, and all-wheel drive (AWD), which Mercedes calls 4Matic, is optional. Other Mercedes models have a more straightforward control interface, and it looks like the folks in Stuttgart are about to give it up. The center screen looks like it floats in the middle of the dash but unfortunately, its baffling menu structure resembles the S-Class’ too much. For all that, though, the 190E was clearly an entry-level car, sparsely equipped with vinyl seats, lots of hard plastic interior parts, and a stick shift as standard equipment. The switchgear feels weighty and substantial, and opting for the available leather upholstery and wood interior accents takes the cabin even further uptown. The artificial-leather upholstery, called MB-Tex, is the most believable fake leather you’ll find anywhere, and honestly, it can pass for the real thing. Inside you’ll find the expected Mercedes upscale execution, with a high-quality feel to every surface, switch, and button, and nothing garish or flashy. And while finding issues with the Mercedes-Benz C300 was not easy, we were able to find four issues that stood out.
