VW Of America Boss Says New Golf GTI Will Be 'Cool As Hell'

In the first day of May, fans of the Volkswagen Golf in America were probably quite disappointed to hear the next-generation of the model won鈥檛 be sold at this side of the pond in its regular form. However, VW will bring the GTI and R versions here, and the company鈥檚 CEO for North America promises the former will be a game changer. In a recent interview with Automobile Magazine, Scott Keogh was kind enough to discuss the future of the marque and the new Golf GTI, and assured it will be even more than what enthusiasts expect. Keogh promised that the GTI will remain an important part of VW鈥檚 plans even in the era of electrification and digitalization. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the heart and soul of our brand,鈥?he told the publication. GTI, the same drivetrain, the same brakes up front. Not only that, but Keogh believes the new Golf GTI will actually shake the hot hatch segment - it鈥檚 going to be 鈥渁s cool as hell,鈥?as he described it. The new Golf GTI is planned for a release sometime next year and you鈥檒l probably be happy to learn that it will remain true to its roots and won鈥檛 embrace electrification. Power is expected to be provided by a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged engine with more horsepower than the Golf GTI MK7. As for the regular Golf, we鈥檙e just a few months away from its official debut. Again, it won鈥檛 be offered in the United States but customers in Europe should be able to order it from the last weeks of this year.

Well our New Year鈥檚 wishlist is already going nowhere because no one will listen - instead of blank switches, we鈥檙e being presented with another high-budget hot hatch. Granted, this seems a good 鈥榰n. The new Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR is the hottest yet, in the hot hatch nameplate鈥檚 43-year history. The first one back in 1976 had a hundred or so horsepower, and this latest model puts down 286bhp to the front wheels. This makes the 2019 GTI TCR the most powerful front-wheel drive VW in history and the fastest GTI ever. Besides new bits like LED headlights and a new display, the car features a limited slip differential, new body-hugging seats, exclusive steering wheel (flat-bottomed, obviously), and distinguishing 18-inch wheels. The suspension gets an upgrade too, with a 20mm drop and stiffer dampers. Prices in Europe are expected to start from the equivalent of around AED160,000, but the exact arrival date of the Golf GTI TCR has鈥檛 been announced by Volkswagen yet. It鈥檚 safe to assume the GTI TCR is the seventh-generation Golf鈥檚 run-out special, because the wider and longer Mk8 is due for a reveal before this summer.
