Chris Evans Falls In Love With A Skoda. Again!

Chris Evans Falls In Love With A Skoda. Again!

Oh God. Here we go again. It鈥檚 time to tell you about another amazing Skoda. If you鈥檙e a regular reader of this column, you will know that when it comes to Skoda I very much have a dog in the race. After reviewing the Skoda Superb Sportline on these very pages in March, I was so bowled over by its brilliance I immediately outed our massive Range Rover and signed on the dotted line for a Sportline estate. Five months on, the love affair continues. It has completely rebooted my family鈥檚 collective take on the modern motor car. Via this column, I am extremely fortunate to drive some seriously fabulous vehicles. This year, for example, there鈥檚 been the Aston Martin DB11, the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, to name but three. But come the time when they must be collected, I genuinely can鈥檛 wait to jump back into my Skoda. For a start, this car looks the absolute business. So am I biased towards the Czech car maker? Yes, I鈥檓 afraid I am.

Does this therefore make it difficult for me to convince you that if I give the new Octavia vRS five stars, it鈥檚 because it鈥檚 genuinely worthy? Yes, I鈥檓 afraid it does. I am a total Skoda nut, entirely partial. When I begin to gush fluent Sportline, friends laugh and guffaw all too predictably. Until, that is, I throw them the keys. 鈥楾ake her for a spin,鈥?I say. 鈥楤orrow her for the weekend. On their return they hop out of the car beaming from ear to ear, uttering phrases such as, 鈥楧arling, we need to sell the Merc and get one of these.鈥?Or, 鈥楾he Disco has to go. A darkly pessimistic stroke survivor's reflections on death? Share Seriously, this is how it almost always is, like shooting fish in a barrel. I don鈥檛 know quite when the tipping point will come, the day when everyone with half a brain goes to swap whatever they鈥檙e currently driving for the equivalent Skoda and a chunk of 鈥榗ash back鈥? All I know is, that day is definitely coming. It has to. Of course, that said, this is entirely dependent on Skoda churning out ridiculously good cars.

For a start, it looks the absolute business. Aggressive but not mean and ugly, with a handsome profile flowing from back to front. Everything is beautifully proportioned, no one detail stealing the show. Next, pick a door - any door - and get a load of that interior. Again, it鈥檚 just gorgeous, front and back, with an all-round quality and shiny, hard finishes. And when it comes to the trim, just look at all that Alcantara. I could spend the next ten years in there, stroking the surroundings, cosying up cheek to chair. Get a load of that interior. The Octavia vRS is Skoda鈥檚 sporty flagship, so one would expect it to be more powerful than my slightly more mature Sportline, especially considering it has the same-size engine. Like the new VW Golf GTI, the vRS has the all-new, super-smooth touch-dash electronics, with new, pin-sharp graphics, camera and screen to match.

Next to my 2016 Sportline, this updated hardware is light years ahead, which is why I鈥檓 already in the queue for a new upgraded Superb (in meteor grey). It arrives this autumn and I cannot wait. Right, now to drive it, and we begin with an anomaly. The Octavia vRS is Skoda鈥檚 sporty flagship, so one would expect it to be more powerful than my slightly more mature Sportline, especially considering it has the same-size engine. As the vRS illustrates, a car doesn鈥檛 have to be more powerful to be livelier. The first time I turned on the ignition, selected first and pressed the accelerator, I was not ready for what happened next. Neither was my gravel driveway, which had no idea what had hit it. Before I had the chance to come off the gas, there was gravel and dust flying all over the place - into the road outside, over the vicar鈥檚 fence and all over our freshly mown grass. Thank heavens Tash was out in her VW Up! Time for a recalibration of my right foot; I鈥檇 forgotten something, you see.
