What are common reasons my Volkswagen Passat has air conditioning problems? What will be the outcome of an air conditioning system diagnosis? Replacement of most air conditioning components requires complete evacuation of the air conditioning system with a refrigerant recovery machine. Once components are re-installed, the technician will remove all air from the system in preparation for recharging the system with new refrigerant. Refrigerant is environmentally harmful, and should never be released into the air. Instead, a proper refrigerant recovery machine must be used to protect the technician, and the environment. We do not recommend attempting to recharge the A/C system at home, as products available to consumers tend to contain substances that can cause damage to expensive refrigerant recovery equipment. Lastly, if your vehicle has not been converted from R12 to R134a refrigerant, the best time to have this service completed is when the air conditioning system is already being serviced. Refrigerant is a dangerous chemical that can cause severe chemical burns to the skin and eyes if improperly handled, and discharging into the atmosphere will cause damage to the ozone. Refrigerant types are updated over time, and the appropriate type must be used. If there has been an update or conversion from an older refrigerant type, a label should be placed under the hood to make your technician aware of the change. Depending on location, it may be illegal for a technician to replace refrigerant without updating the A/C system to handle the newest type.

Is there another car on the way out? During the weekend, Motor1 dropped a little bombshell by reporting that the base Volkswagen Golf will not return to the U.S. Actually, the website was told by a high-ranking VW employee in California that the eighth generation of the popular German hatchback, set to be revealed in October, is not planned for the American market in classic guise. Same thing for the SportWagen variant. It appears only the sporty Golf GTI and Golf R will survive. As we write these lines, Volkswagen has not made an official announcement. However, The Car Guide contacted Volkswagen Canada鈥檚 head of communications and public relations, Thomas Tetzlaff, and he responded by saying that the Golf would continue to be part of the Canadian portfolio. Down in Uncle Sam鈥檚 land, the Golf GTI outsold the base Golf nearly three-to-one in 2018 and the latter accounted for less than two percent of total Volkswagen sales. North of the border, it鈥檚 a much different story. While we don鈥檛 have the specific numbers for each variant, the compact hatchback as a whole was the best-selling VW vehicle last year with 21,477 units versus 21,449 for the Tiguan. Despite a slight dip so far in 2019, it will never fall below second place.

We鈥檙e only a few months away from seeing the new eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf for the first time. At an event in California this week, a high-ranking Volkswagen employee told us that the standard version of the next-gen Golf, as well as the SportWagen, won鈥檛 be available in the U.S. Only the performance variants of the new Mark VIII - the GTI and Golf R - will be available stateside. When we reached out for an official statement, Volkswagen declined to comment further. While no official explanation was provided, a glance at the sales figures provides some insight. In 2018, the GTI and Golf R combined for 48 percent of the Golf family鈥檚 sales, with the GTI out-selling the standard Golf nearly three-to-one. Though none of the Golf's variants sell in massive numbers, VW only sold 6,642 base Golfs in 2018 - less than two percent of overall car sales for the brand. This news also leaves the other models in the Golf lineup, the e-Golf and Alltrack, in question. Prior reporting indicates that the next-gen Golf will not be going full electric again, with the Europe-only Volkswagen I.D. The rugged Alltrack, though, still makes sense in a market where cars like the Subaru Crosstrek and Kia Soul exist. However, with the SportWagen on which it鈥檚 based not returning, the Alltrack鈥檚 future looks dim. Not having the standard Golf in the U.S. Chalk it up to more compact crossovers hitting the market as viable replacements, or just a shift in consumer mindsets altogether. Either way, the good news is that the two hot hatch versions of the Golf remain, and they鈥檙e already shaping up to be pretty epic.
