Women Are Fuelling A Classic Car Sales Boom





Women are fuelling a mini-boom in classic car sales as they seek a better return on their money, as well as a fun drive, new research reveals. Once the preserve of middle-aged men and enthusiastic petrolheads, the classic car market is now attracting younger, financially savvy women defying falling savings rates and plummeting annuity rates on their pension pots. Over the past two years, the number of female classic car owners has risen by 40 per cent, with female customers now accounting for 11 per cent of the market, says new research by classic car insurance broker Footman James. The top classic car marques owned by women are Morris, Volkswagen, MG, Mazda and Land Rover. Women are also better than men at spotting models that will appreciate in value. The five cars that increased most in 2015 were the Fiat Dino (up 113 per cent), Lamborghini Miura (62 per cent), Peugeot 205 (44 per cent), Land Rover Defender (43 per cent) and Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTi (43 per cent). But everyday classics are a less risky investment 鈥?from Mark 1 Golf GTis to MGB Roadsters, Land Rover Defenders, VW Camper vans, or Italian cars built in the Seventies (albeit in good condition). Seek expert advice, ask questions, monitor the market and remember that maintenance costs will eat into your profits.

The Clubman is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged triple shared with the lighter Hardtop, so it isn鈥檛 the quickest car in the company鈥檚 lineup. But its smooth 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of turbo torque shouldn鈥檛 have you longing for any more pistons. Nevertheless, you can step up to the Cooper S Clubman and its 189 hp turbo four-cylinder, if you are. The Clubman I tested was front-wheel-drive with a six-speed manual transmission, but an 8-speed automatic is available, as is all-wheel-drive. The stick is crisp, and will blip the throttle on downshifts to keep you from lurching along. You can turn the feature off, but you lose the stability control with it. Something you鈥檇 do before hitting a track or an autocross, perhaps. This isn鈥檛 really that kind of MINI, though. Case in point: It has an electronic parking brake, so no handbrake turns, either. Or not. It鈥檚 very nimble, and entertaining to drive on a twisty road. The suspension handles bumps and curves with equal skill, and that extra-long wheelbase adds stability. All told, the Clubman has a near-luxurious ride. 24,950, it鈥檚 a premium machine for its size. I'd peg its closest cross-shop to be the four-door Volkswagen Golf GTI; a slightly larger, much more powerful, fun to drive compact that鈥檚 one of the best cars in the world, but a little short on character. MINIs have plenty of that, even ones like this that don鈥檛 quite live up to the name. If installing a BMW GPS navigation in your car, that would be great!
