2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Review, Pricing, Trims, & Photos

The long-anticipated 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI has officially made it to dealers like our partner in the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario, CA - Ontario Volkswagen. The GLI is the enthusiasts, sporty model, of the Jetta. Volkswagen updated its standard line of Jetta鈥檚 in the previous year. So, with these 2019 models, Volkswagen marks the 7th generation of GLIs and Jettas. My friends at Ontario VW gave me a Jetta GLI for a day recently. Here鈥檚 my complete report after running around Southern California鈥檚 Inland Empire and getting a feel for the all-new 2019 VW Jetta GLI! The Volkswagen Jetta GLI has historically been compared to its VW hatchback (hot hatch in VW-lingo) sibling the Golf GTI. Well, they鈥檙e both Volkswagens and both the sporty/enthusiasts trims of their respective models. Personally, I like both for different reasons. I鈥檒l contrast the two vehicles, only once, in a moment. With the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI being in its 7th generation that equates to 35-years here in the United States.

And those 35-years are honored in one of the trim options for the 2019 VW Jetta GLI. And, it just so happens that, my test-driver was a 35th Anniversary Edition GLI. So here鈥檚 the cool comparison I鈥檓 going to give the 2019 VW Jetta GLI 35th Anniversary Edition and the 2019 Golf GTI Rabbit Edition. Volkswagen鈥檚 stylish, yet in-the-know and subtle seat tags. Okay, one other comparison, with the GTI and the GLI both being the sporty trims, is the very cool red line across the grills of both vehicles. It鈥檚 in all sorts of pics. BTW, wondering what GTI and GLI stand for? Those are acronyms for Grand Touring Injection and Grand Luxury Injection. So to put the comparisons of the Jetta GLI and the Golf GTI to rest, at least for this post, the Golf is going to be sportier and a hatchback. Whereas the Jetta GLI is a sedan and slightly less aggressive.

The 鈥?9 VW Jetta GLI is offered in three different trims. As always, don鈥檛 worry about the MSRP - manufacturer鈥檚 suggested retail price - for two reasons. First, you need to get your 鈥?9 VW Jetta GLI equipped to your specifications. And more importantly, go see my friends at Ontario Volkswagen. Beyond putting you in the car you want and at the best price, they鈥檙e not going to play any of the old school (or new school!) games. The guys and gals at Ontario Volkswagen are my friends and I鈥檓 happy to personally introduce you. Volkswagen鈥檚 2019 Jetta GLI comes with the same engine across all three trims. That鈥檚 a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that puts out 228-horsepower with 258 lb-ft of torque. The 鈥?9 Jetta GLI comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. And I love driving manual on open roads and low-traffic conditions. Of course, here in Southern California, we鈥檙e hardpressed to find either of those settings. So the optional 7-speed automatic transmission is probably the way to go.

My test driver hand the automatic transmission option and it鈥檚 Tiptronic shifting offered the fun and control of manual while delivering the convenience of automatic. What鈥檚 even better are the paddle shifters. Even in normal drive mode, I spun the tires with the paddles. In sport mode, you can easily smoke the rubber. And with the 2019 VW Jetta GLI still being a Volkswagen, great fuel economy comes standard. All the trims and engines are rated the same at 25-miles-per-gallon in the city and 32-miles-per-gallon on the highway. Like usual, the Ontario Volkswagen team set me up in a gorgeous, well-equipped test driver. The 35th Anniversary Edition is super-eye-catching, especially in the Pure Gray color they gave me. But really, you can鈥檛 go wrong with any of the colors, (red, white, black, gray, & silver) VW offers for the 鈥?9 Jetta GLI. All of them look fantastic with the red highlighted GLI badging.

We drove the fully loaded SEL Premium model, and although impressively modern, the quality of the materials was fairly basic beyond the main touch points and there was a piece of insulation sticking out of the edge of the dash. That kind of thing is easily forgiven when the leather seats themselves were of a good quality, supportive, comfortable, and heated and cooled for year-round comfort. Even the rear seats were quite comfortable, except for the middle position, of course. No matter which trim you choose, your Jetta will be powered by a teeny-tiny 1.4-liter four-cylinder, turbocharged to a pretty impressive 147 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque powering the front wheels. While Volkswagen does keep a manual transmission on offer, it can only be had with the base S model, and the automatic has the advantage of two more gears, levelling the playing field when it comes to efficiency. For an engine that small, it鈥檚 no slouch, the full 184 lb-ft available from 1,400 rpm, puling the 2,970-lb Jetta up to speed with good jump when called upon, further enabled by Sport mode for throttle and transmission.

FULLY charged battery and the solenoid just clicks? Tap on side of it or solenoid will often ( not always) allow it to engage and crank engine. Friend or check with a mechanic how to affix this . Dead battery, probably completely life expired at that age as anything over 3 years is a bonus - a new battery should cure it immediately. Batteries lose a lot of power in the cold. If the battery capacity is reduced it will show up in cold weather. You say the lights work - and they will. They only take about 10-15 amps of power. The starter may take 200 amps. If the starter clicks and there is NO change to the head light intensity - it means the solenoid is not connecting. The solenoid could be "weak" because of the low battery. You need to make sure the battery is strong. As to the other part of your question about "a piece of metal" being in the way - was the 2nd battery you got not the same configuration? You certainly MUST get the cables connected properly or the engine wont run.

I think the head light on test will indicate if your battery is weak and the solenoid is working. I did have a VW starter fail once because the internal solenoid contacts burned out (after about 120,000 miles). There are some copper buttons in there that wear over time from arcing. If the car is high mileage - you might need to just get a rebuilt starter. It will have new bearings, brushes and contacts in it and will solve any starter problems. 2001 VW Jetta battery keeps dying? I have a 2001 VW Jetta Wolfsburg and the battery keeps dying overnight. I have checked the amp draw and it is drawing about 800 ma when the car is turned off and alarm set. I've pulled every fuse and relay that I can find and the problem is still there. The battery is only about 4 months old and the previous one lasted only about the same amount of time. The one I have now is a factory VW battery. Of course that doesn't mean they haven't gone bad. Install a new battery. Most car batteries are only good for three years. This happened with me and it was because I kept the battery warmer thing on there in hot weather. Could be your radio. This happened to me once. The company that I bought my aftermarket radio from wired it so that I could just turn the radio on without using the ignition key . Turns out that the radio was draining the battery even when it was off. My local VW dealer found the problem . Went back to the radio shop and had it re-wired. End of problem; although now I have to switch the ignition on to play the radio when the car is off. Also, check for any bulbs that may be on when the car is turned off. My son's car had a trunk lite that would not turn off. This drained his battery . Once he found the culprit, problem solved.

Another nod to the 35th Anniversary Edition, in addition to the seat tags mentioned above, is the exterior badging on both sides of the Jetta GLI. And the 18鈥?5-spoke gray painted wheels, on the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 35th Anniversary Edition, with red accents, looked great especially with the red brake calipers visible. Driving the enthusiasts鈥?version of the 2019 Jetta was a blast. Exactly as, I鈥檓 sure, Volkswagen intended. The GLI is quick. From a dead stop, you can really feel the torque. And that goes the same for when you鈥檙e on the highway and want to pass someone. In both cases, it also sounds great when doing so! My test driver, the 35th Anniversary Edition, also had Volkswagen鈥檚 Dynamic Chasis Control (DCC) giving it a very sure-footed and stable feel when handling at any speed. 30k. And again, that鈥檚 just MSRP, go see my friends at Ontario VW for the best deal you鈥檒l find. The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is distinctive and sharp in its styling.

You may not realize it, but air bags deploy at speeds sometimes exceeding 200 mph. Many consumers experiencing an air bag deployment have indicated that the air bag appeared to explode, and have compared the sound to a shotgun blast. When questioning an air bag's performance during an accident, there are three critical questions you should analyze before determining its role in contributing to serious injuries or a wrongful death. Should the air bag have deployed? When an airbag should deploy depends on many different factors, including your type of airbag. If the airbag did not deploy, and should have, you may have a "failure to deploy" or "non-deployment" case. In such a situation, the air bag would have deployed if the air bag crash sensor or other components had not failed. Failure of a crash sensor (or the wires connecting a crash sensor to the electronic control unit) often cause the air bag to not deploy. Sometimes air bags don't deploy because the car company did not conduct adequate crash tests when designing the air bags.

For example, many airbag systems sold to consumers were never tested in car-to-car crash tests, even though such crashes occur every day. We often see air bag failures in crashes involving trees or utility poles. Did the air bag have specific safety features? Because air bags can deploy at speeds of more than 200 mph, they should include certain safety features to reduce the risk of injury during deployment. In addition to safety features, the air bag system must also work together with the other parts of the car. For example, air bag crash sensors depend on the vehicle having a good structure or frame so the signal is received soon enough to avoid a late deployment. Also, the instrument panel (I/P) or "dash" needs to be designed so that the knees and legs are not injured, while keeping the body properly positioned. With a turbocharged 4-cylinder gas engine, the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta GLI sits on a sport suspension, while the driver and front-seat passenger sit on sport-bolstered comfort seats. Bluetooth and premium audio are standard as well, and so is a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel. A Fender sound system, 18-inch wheels and power sunroof help the GLI Autobahn model provide a more upscale alternative that can be further refined with navigation, a backup camera and LED daytime running lamps. By earning top scores for occupant protection in front, side, rear and rollover impact scenarios, the 2013 VW Jetta qualified as a Top Safety Pick of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
