REVIEW: 2020 Mercedes-Benz C300 - An Affordable Sports Sedan

For the C-Class, looking at the differences between the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C300 vs 2016 C300 4MATIC can help ensure you find the Mercedes-Benz that’s right for you. Due to the different drivetrains of the 2016 C300 and C300 4MATIC, each of the sedan achieve different fuel economy ratings. We base our ratings on the most common versions of wide-ranging car lines such as the 2019 C-Class, so here it’s a 7, based on the C300 sedan, coupe, and convertible. As the high-spec mainline Benz-branded C-Class, the C300 is a measurable step up - on paper, at least - from the basic 1.5-litre C200 entry version ($63,700 list), and it’s still a big leap up the fiscal ladder to the AMG-branded, six-cylinder C43 ($108,600 list). C43s skip the air springs in favor of adaptive dampers, while the C63 has a firmer version of the air suspension. For big horsepower fans, an AMG-tuned version of the car - the C63 AMG - holds a 6.2-liter V-8 and hits dealerships in spring 2008. I tested various versions of the C300.

Mercedes will update this model sometime in the 2019 model year, and will likely add more battery capacity to boost the plug-in’s 9 miles of electric drive range, and with any luck, the combined 30-mpg fuel economy that barely nudged out the gas-engined C300. Add blind spot assist for $550 or the parking assist package with a surround view system and park assist for $1,090. • Premium Package - The Premium package for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz C300 adds features such as blind spot assist, an electronic trunk closer, rear cross traffic alert, a Burmester premium surround sound system, and more. For $1,700, the Driver Assistance package comes with adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, evasive steering assist, speed limit recognition, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and automatic lane changing. When activated, it works with lane tracing assist to keep you in your lane.


Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration come standard. So if you’re looking for performance, the BMW 330i is where you wanna be. In terms of performance, the BMW 330i was quicker in every test. They also found that, while behind the 3 Series in terms of handling capability, it was actually a very fun car to drive. In its default Comfort drive mode, it’s slightly tardy in response to throttle inputs, and lazier still when called to arms to plug a gap in traffic or to overtake. Its replumbed twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine has stronger forced induction, for a total of 385 hp, up from 362 hp; torque stands still at 384 lb-ft. Different from four-wheel drive, the 4MATIC all-wheel drive optimizes torque and control of every wheel all the time. Standalone options for the C300 include a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel and a number of interior and exterior trim pieces.


It did get most things right with this version, and with some softer seats and a little more steering feel, it would have an even better car. The Audi A4 fares better with 37.4 inches of headroom and 35.7 inches of legroom, while the BMW 3 Series beats them all with 40.3 inches of headroom but only 35.1 inches of legroom. The seats are soft and relaxing making them perfect for long drives, with 37.1 inches of headroom and 35.2 inches of legroom. There's also good lateral support, and you can upgrade to various sport or performance front seats that are more contoured and supportive. It has good dynamics for a car of its weight and luxury, just not quite as sharp as the 3 Series. CR has the BMW 330i doing 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds but we’ve tested it, as have other car publications, and it’s far faster than that, capable of doing the spring in under 6 seconds with ease. But the BMW 330i makes more torque, packing 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) to the C300’s 272 lb-ft (370 Nm).
