Might my confusion be due to the fact that rental rates made via the .ie web sites of the direct booking sites include basic CDW? Read somewhere to always book through the .ie sites rather than the .com US web sites of the major car rental companies. I do wish we didnt collectively need an automatic聴not all of my party knows how to drive a manual. That itself seems to add significant cost to any car rental in Ireland. Finally, what about insurance implications if we briefly drive into Northern Ireland? Not presently on our itinerary. Thanks again to all for the help. In regards to driving into Northern Ireland, Conn's doesn't charge extra, and I think that's true of a lot of rental car companies, but you'll want to read the fine print for each company. There was an unadvertised airport charge at SNN, which I was subsequently refunded.

And can't you find a friend/driving school that might be able to give a lesson on driving a manual/stick shift before you leave? It might be worth the investment. I think this is an excellent suggestion, but I'll note that as much of an adjustment as it is learning to drive a manual, it's another adjustment driving with the shift hand switched. Not always a bad thing if the driver is a natural lefty, but just something else to throw into the equation.
